Gift of Trees

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As the thin, bare arms stretch and the tiny fingers reach for the heavens, the stately trees take their winter posture.  They are beautiful in their own right after the colorful autumn leaves falling to the ground.  Did you know that trees  are some of the oldest organisms on earth? There are some Live Oaks that are over 500 years old. Here is one from Maryland that was growing before Columbus had found the “New World!

The Giant Sequoia are  2, 500 years old  or older and  are in California. The people are so small in comparison and give you a scale to the massive size of the trees.

There are some Bristle-cone Pines that are over 5000 years old.  GBbristlecone

They are found in the Western portion of the United States.  I have to admit, they were not a favorite of mine, and  just appeared to be straggly. I had no idea that these are among  the oldest organisms on earth!

Trees help soil remain healthy  by reducing erosion, produce oxygen and use our excess carbon dioxide. There are 23,000 varieties in the world. Each state has a honored tree.  Here is a stand of the New York Sugar Maple tree:

and the Palo Verde Tree in Arizona which blooms in the spring and causes many runny eyes and noses from the falling, colorful pollen.

There is no National Tree at the moment, but the Mighty Oak is thought to be the favorite when that honor is bestowed  on a tree.

Arbor Day, though not a national holiday, is set aside to encourage tree planting.  Trees provide shade, oxygen, fruit and nuts, protection , materials for homes, places for our children to play, and  we have to protect and  replenish  them.  As the stewards of creation, we need to care for and pass along healthy trees for our children, grandchildren, and all subsequent generations.

Wise Geese

geese_cull_cost_sharing_proposed_1630887165

One of my favorite signals of the change of seasons in New York, is hearing the Canadian Geese honking as the fly overhead, south in the autumn and north in the spring. I stretch my neck like  a  goose to see the telltale V-formation in which they fly high in the sky.

canadian_geese_in_water

These beauties are waterfowl living throughout North America. They are recognizable by their elegant long black necks, the distinctive honking sound they make, and  flying in a  V-formation.

geese

Another fact which I found interesting is that they mate for life.  Their habitats are  near ponds, rivers, and lakes. They eat aquatic vegetation or grain and corn from nearby fields which is not often appreciated by the farmers.  Their  huge appetite produces large amounts of excrement which  is an unpleasant side affect  especially in urban park settings.

Well, from the title, you can see that I think these geese are wise, but I haven’t discussed that aspect of their nature.  Please view the short  video to learn about the  instinctive wisdom of geese which we all could learn from and emulate!

Halloween . . . . . .October 31st

jack

I like this picture because it reminds me of the pumpkins my architect carved for our children. He was never satisfied with a traditional jack-o-lantern, but carved R2D2 and Picasso pumpkins among others for our doorstep!  From this  shot, you can see other non- traditional examples of carving.

In the United States today, Halloween celebration is a multi-billion dollar industry, second only to the celebration of Christmas because of the costumes, candy, parties, haunted houses, cards, movies and decorations.

But what is being celebrated? The roots of Halloween began over 2000 years ago by the Celts of Ireland , England and parts of France. It was the Fire Festival known as Samhain (sow-en)  and celebrated at harvest time. On that night the belief was that  the  spirits of the dead freely moved among the living. The fire was to protect the living.  In the 7th century, the Roman Catholic Church moved the celebration of All Saints Day to November 1 to replace this pagan Samhain celebration the night before.  October 31st became “All Hallow’s Eve or Halloween. The masks  and Jack-O-Lantern were to “scare away” the evil spirits.

Because of the origins of Halloween some people have changed trick-or-treating to harvest festivals for a more positive celebration.

Children love to dress up in costurmes and eat candy. Do I think most young children are celebrating evil spirists when they celebrate Halloween?  No, I don’t. But there is no question that the night has become darker with the masks and costumes as the children get older.  Years ago, parents had to start checking their children’s candy to make sure there was no tampering with it to harm their  children.  People started letting their children go only to  houses where they knew the people personally.  Decorations are getting more elaborate and sophisticated with characters and events in films that children could not see due to the rating systems.  I do think that it is sad that children these days are exposed to such extremes and that they are not able to just dress-up and eat their candy!

I loved these pictures from http://www.buzzfeed.com  with children in wonderful homemade positive, creative, fun costumes.  They remind me of my children who would go as buildings thanks to my architect!  Empire State, Villa Sovoye by Le Corbusier to mention a few!

The Party’s Over. . . . . . Clean-Up Time

images (62)

Have  you ever wondered what happens to all these colorful leaves after the celebration of all that is autumn?  Just like any party, there is clean-up after the trees are bare,  and a need for order. . . . . even for colorful, fallen leaves. When the windy rain of late October and November comes, the leaves fall quickly.  The first year we moved to New York and had a back yard full of Maple trees…..and leaves all over the ground, I didn’t rake.  I saw others doing it but I didn’t want to be bothered. I learned a lesson about procrastination the next spring. After the snow melted, I was left with dead, brown, wet, messy, moldy leaves!  I don’t know what I was thinking, but for sure the leaf leprechauns did not come during the dark of winter to do my job!

The next year and for falls to come, the children and I would turn raking the leaves into a game.  They would jump into the piles and roll around.PSR24_2 Finally, we would rake them into a big pile onto a sheet.61WDQR5HG1L Next we grabbed the corners, carried, and dragged the leaves on the  sheet to the street to pile them along the curb.

images (63)

I remember seeing these leaf vacuum trucks for the first time.  I had never seen one in Virginia, Maryland or Kansas, but there were not so many trees there.  The city announces  the route of the special trucks and as long as your leaves are on the street, they will be removed.  Some people like to run the mower over the leaves to turn them into tiny pieces, first. 6a00e554503eee88330120a66f14f4970b-800wi

We always just raked and fed the leaf vacuum. images (66)

Different groups such as Youth Groups from churches, and fraternities will either volunteer to help their neighbors or work for a small fee.

And if you don’t get your leaves on the curb in a timely manner, there is another alternative….biodegradable bags which when filled and neatly placed, the regular trash removal with take.   And this is the rest of the story, more than you ever wanted to know about living in Upstate New York! images (64)

Sweeping, Sweeping Everywhere ( from February 9,2013)

In almost six weeks, we  have seen no trash trucks, no recycling bins to be emptied, but endless sweeping , everywhere.  The trash  must go somewhere and that is into piles along the sides of the road. In the mornings, the piles have turned to ashes because the homeless burn the piles for warmth against the chilly desert night. Mumbai allows no burning of the trash piles, consequently the piles are higher there because, of course, they do have sweeping.  Feral dogs and cattle scavenge for morsels deep inside the trash.

Houses along our unpaved lane, deep in the heart of Ahmedabad, are surprisingly upper middle class. In the  morning, each house has two sweepers and a boy to wipe the  steps and tiles with a rather dirty wet cloth. The pile from each house is swept out onto the lane by women using  these ancient handmade brooms. As far as I know, there are  no social programs in India.  No unemployment insurance, medicare or  medicaid or Social Security. Here there are assistants for every job, and much of it seems to be “make work” for the poor. I have no idea how much the pay is, but many people are paid or fed to complete a task that could be accomplished by many less workers. I read that the wealthy don’t hire a driver or a cook but they hire “servants” who do every job needed by the family.  It seems whole families can be hired by an affluent family .  The poverty slams you in  the face , Nothing like I have seen, except  in Egypt, many years ago. At this moment in time, the lucky ones here from the 1,200,000.000,000 population have,at least , a sweeping job.

ImageThe women in the picture were sweeping at the Indian Institute of Management, a very beautiful complex designed by Louis Kahn. I tried to take a picture of the woman on the left sweeping, but she insisted that she stand next to her friend. Many Indians love to have their pictures taken and then want to see themselves in the camera window.  So far no one has asked for a “tip” for taking a picture, as was a custom in Egypt.

P. S.  I wrote this the first month we were in Ahmedabad. By the end of our stay, we started seeing a few garbage trucks and some wagons manned or “woman-ed” by the trash pickers who are Dalit or untouchable caste.  There is a real need for garbage cans and regular pick-up all over India. Chennai, formally Madras, was the cleanest city in our opinion. It has lots of international businesses, which might explain the difference. Notice the short broom with no handle.  Using this ancient broom is very hard on the sweeper’s back.

Renoir . . . . . the film

358726_t607

Renoir, a French film made in 2012, is a drama of sumptuous beauty.  It is in French with English subtitles and is based on the last years of Renoir’s life in his Cagnes-sur Mer farmhouse  in the south of France.  W W I  is raging just out of sight, and the peaceful setting only hints at that world when Renoir’s son, Jean comes home wounded to recuperate from his injury. The two Renoir men are both enchanted with the real main character, a scarlet haired teenage model, Andree with a personality to match.renoir_02cf

She links the father, whose life and career are nearing an end, and the son, Jean, who anticipates a future career in film when he is well.  Interestingly, the title Renoir  could be about the father or the son , who both are gifted artists in different  media. renoir-film

This is a beautiful film with each frame , a individual painting with colors , focal points and movement. We saw this on Pay for View  . . . . my choice after we watch The Iceman. Though there was not  a car chase or explosion anywhere to be seen, my architect sat through the whole film with very few complaints about “watching paint dry!”

Happy Karwa Chauth

Karva-Chauth-01October 22nd, is celebrated  in Gujarat and  by  Hindi women in the north of India and Pakistan .  Married women are fast and pray all day for the safety, good health, and longevity of life of their husbands.karwa-chauth-katha

These beautiful pictures of young love and families were contrasted in the Daily Mail’s story and pictures.  Sadly, widows are shunned and cast out in society after their husband’s die. There is a new charity that is working  to give these faithful older women a pension and their rightful place in Indian society. In a country that has moved away from the wife being burned on her husband’s burial fire, they have come a long way, but many habits and customs are hard to break. Hopefully, by the time the young women are widows, conditions and respect for them will be the action of the day. article-2316493-19880894000005DC-37_964x618

Navona . . . Roman Gathering Place

MV5BMTU2Nzg1ODM0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTM5OTMyMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_   One day years ago, when we were with our children and a group of architecture students,  our children and I were in Piazza Novona just for a walk, when we saw cameras, scaffolding and crowds of people at one end of the piazza. With more careful inspection we saw Chevy Chase, a well known actor in the States….comedian really.  We rushed back to tell David and the students to “come quickly!’  That was our first experience about the tedium and slowness of filming …..getting everything as right as possible. We were hoping that we could have been in a crowd scene but that didn’t happen. After about an hour, we lost interest and left.  The scenes shot in Navona were cut and scenes shot at the Spanish Steps and the Colosseum were included in the Roman part of the European Vacation.

pilgrimage-large

Another memory I have about Navona, is walking with David when  he overhears and recognizes that  priests were  talking in Latin. Well, I just would tune out  all these languages that were non-understandable for me. I try not to be the ugly American  but English is the international language now, right?  Of course , the irony is that we both took Latin, a dead language, in High School because we were going to college.  Latin and Italian are quite similar but David could tell the difference  or at least he said he did. . . . . On one of my trips a friend visited Rome for the first time. She had had years and years of Latin and enjoyed reading the inscriptions on ancient cornices written in Latin and of course Roman numerals.

Piazza Navona is a gathering place day and night.  There are wonderful cafes where you can sit and enjoy the sights.   You pay more to sit in Italy , but that seat is yours as long as you want but  you must  buy as little as a drink or as much as a meal.  Ice cream or gelato is a favorite especially in warm weather. The street theater always amuses. . . artists, mimes, dancers, singers, or just tourists!
