On November 5, 2013, India became a member of an elite group of countries US, Russia, China, and Japan sending rockets to  Mars to explore the many  question of  the “Red Planet.”The Indian ship, Mangalyaan which means “Mars Craft” in Hindi will travel 485 million miles over 300 days to reach orbit around Mars in September 2014. The mission is to discover details of the surface, minerals in the soil,  and atmosphere of the Red Planet.  The aerospace engineers in India were very excited at the flawless lift-off with the constraints they had with a slight 5 minute window to lift-off! This is the first Indian orbiter sent to Mars and  another significant detail is the cost of $80 million dollar which is much less than earlier missions launched by other countries.

India has a long history with interest in the science of astronomy and later astrology. The first text on astronomy was in 1500 BC in the study of Vedanga.  When we were in India, we visited the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur and in Delhi. These were gardens built for the people to study the stars and constellations and used to predict horoscopes.

Congratulations, India on your successful space launch. Just another sign of your great potential.  And yes, I am sure you will be able to explore space while you work to eliminate hunger and  provide toilets for your people.

Thanks to my friend Judy, also  a regular visitor to India, who posted this on Facebook. It is good for the rest of  the world to know that kindness and love for our neighbors is alive and well in New York City!

Yesterday, a user on Reddit shared this image along with the description below.”Heading home on the Q train yesterday when this young African American guy nods off on the shoulder of a Jewish man. The man doesn’t move a muscle, just lets him stay there. After a minute, I asked the man if he wanted me to wake the kid up, but he shook his head and responded, ‘He must have had a long day, let him sleep. We’ve all been there, right?” He was still sleeping soundly when I got off the train 20 minutes later. It was a small gesture, but a kind one. I love New Yorkers!”What a wonderful reminder that every moment is a chance to do something good for another person. And not only that, but inspire the others around us with our small but powerful actions.

Diwali or Deepavali

Celebration of Light with candles twinkling in the winter night! Welcome to the biggest Indian festival, lasting for five days, and filled with  color and joy. . .  .Diwali.  The candles make me think of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, White Dog Festival ( Iroquois Native American Festival)  and Christmas…..light in the winter darkness. Diwali began as a religious festival  to celebrate good overcoming evil, but today it is celebrated by most Indians regardless of religion as a beginning of the New Year.  It is the beginning of the Hindu calendar year and is the celebration of blessings, life, and family.  It is as important in India as Christmas is in the United States.

Preparations begin with shopping: Ah , the vibrant Indian colors. . . . .

India FestivalGifts and greeting cards  are  exchanged with family and friends.  New clothes represent the beginning of a New Year. There are religious observances and celebrations  of various stories of  mythology. Most ares in India celebrate a different myth, but all celebrate good conquering evil.

Sacred Trees

100_2890Trees are included in religious mythology  either as sacred objects or in the teaching of beliefs from the beginning of faith systems. Primitive worship in  all parts of the world include the importance of trees and rocks. The tree is a powerful symbol of growth, decay and resurrection in its  cycle of life. The Hindu animistic beliefs  are that everything in the universe is sacred and especially things that grow. The picture above of a Banyan Tree near the the step well, Adalaaj Ni Vav. It shows the special roots it grows to support the ever enlarging canopy and can be used as an analogy to demonstrate everlasting life. The Banyan is the National Tree of India.

This is another Indian tree , Pipal or (Ficus Religiosa).  This is a sacred place for Buddhists as it is the tree under which Buddha was meditating when he reached enlightenment. It is referred to as the “wisdom tree,” and  is located at the temple of Bodh Gaya.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. There are two trees. One is the Tree of the Knowlege of Good and Evil of which Adam and Eve are forbidden to eat. When they disobey, they are banned from the Garden and forbidden to eat from the Tree of Life , which  insured  life eternal.

tree_of_life2

This is a representation of the Tree of Life for Judism.

large_2x

And this is from Islam.  Both Judaism and Islam forbid the concrete representation of God.  And Islam forbids any representations of people, animals or anything that could be worshiped other than Allah.

In Christianity, too, trees are important in teaching beliefs. I-152-2

This is a Byzantine  picture of Christ and his saints on a tree probably an illustration of “Christ the tree and followers are the branches. ” In Matthew 21, Christ actually curses the fruitless Fig Tree and illustrates the need for faith. Also in the New Testament, the Fruits of the Spirit are outward manifestations of our inner relationship with God. There is often spiritual struggle  or battle between our human evil desire  and the desires of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Examples are good verses evil and  our sinful nature verses  holy nature. And of course, Christ gave up his life on a cross (tree) for the forgiveness of the sins of  a fallen world.

Trees have had a large part in the world’s history.  There is a wonderful children’s book called The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein . It clearly shows the many things that trees have done for people.  In fact they give totally and unconditionally. It is a lovely story for children or adults alike. The_Giving_Tree

Seed of Light Award

seed-of-light-award11

A Farmer’s Analogy

I consider a blog like a tree.

A tree has its roots on fertile and firm ground. A blog is anchored to the imagination of its author, grounded in the basic principle of freedom of expression with responsibility.

A tree rises with a strong trunk to mature. A blog will build up its creator’s confidence to persevere.

A tree creates new branches and greening leaves. A blog will offer greater possibilities to provide its writer a medium to hone his writing skills by producing meaningful content.

A tree will attract every creature under its shade. A blog will persuade visitors, who manage their own blogs, to stay for a time and interact.

A tree will produce fragrant flowers that will eventually bloom. A blog will store memorable posts that will blossom in the hearts and minds of readers.

A tree will bear fruits that will taste as sweet as honey. A blog will give its creator the satisfying fruits of his labor.

A tree. A blog. (from belsbror.wordpress.com)

This lovely analogy is from my friend Belsbror  on his About page of introduction. I am particularly honored to be given this award from a farmer poet!  Visit his blog and be inspired!  belsbror.wordpress.com

Dhanteras

Dhanteras8

November 1 will be the celebration of Dhanteras which is the Hindu Celebration of Wealth. The goddess Laxmi ,whom we met at the medieval gates of Ahmedabah, is  honored with sweets. It is a traditional day of well-being for  businesses as this is the time of the year for purchases of gold, silver and platinum jewelry.  ( I am thinking this is the women’s favorite festival!) There are special songs and of course dancing.  My hope for all my Hindu friends is for  a celebration of wealth and prosperity of health, spirit, and family .

Women everywhere love “bling!”

I included this  image because of the swastikas which will probably  surprise my Western friends.  We noticed them all around India especially in Hindu and Jain temples. The meaning as I  researched  is “it is well.”  The sign has been found to be used by Native American tribes and other places in the world. The Nazis and Hitler were the ones who bastardized it for the Western world.

Correction on Gift of Trees

I am hopeless with the technology and couldn’t figure out how to Update and save.  My blogger friend S K Nicholls pointed out that I misnamed my first ancient tree. The one pictured  in the original post is Angel Oak and is in Charleston , SC.  The  following is the Wye Oak which is in Maryland!
