Sarkhej Roza

Sarkhej Roza is a magnificent complex built on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.  It is composed of  a  modest, but graceful old  mosque, a library, a lake, gardens and palace ruins.  It was built by the city’s founding monarch as a memorial for his spiritual  adviser and  Sufi saint, Sheikh Ahmed Khattu who was  buried in the mausoleum.  These beautiful carved screened windows are in the library. They let in light and air but provide privacy for those inside looking out, especially for the women who are not to be seen except by their family.

This is the ruins of the queen’s palace which is an integration of Muslim,  Hindu and Jain architectural elements.

Another shot of the queen’s palace which now is in ruins. There was a huge lake in front of these buildings which as you can see is all dried up. But maybe not now as it is monsoon.

Next stop was the mausoleum where the spiritual adviser is buried . He is reported to have lived to be 111 years old.

Next was the mosque which is a house of prayer even today. Women are not allowed in this mosque, but other mosques didn’t restrict women from entering. We tried always to be respectful and honor the religious practices wherever we were.

As David began photographing the site and the buildings , we were in a large piazza in front of the mosque. There was a large tree for shade and under it were many woman , children and babies.  Yeah…my favorite.  I waved and they flew over to me as you can see!

What great pleasure they all seemed to get having their pictures taken and then seeing themselves in the window. . . such simple things bring much pleasure. 100_3157

There is our rickshaw driver Sunil, who came over the rescue me for the crowd,  never knowing this is the best part of the day for me. I love the beautiful warm friendly children and their long suffering yet incredibly patient elders. This was a special blessing for me.

As we were leaving the entrance door to the complex, I spotted this sign and it became my number two favorite shot of the day .  It is said that Islam is still practiced as it was in the ancient days….looks pretty modern and up to date with the  posting of  this sign!

Beautiful Blue Bird

Dancing peacock2-L

Could  there be a more perfect bird for the National Bird of India, all dressed, not in a brightly colored  sari, but metallic  blue with tail  feathers to match, all opening into a lovely fan?  These  peafowls are native to South Asia and related to the pheasant family.   Actually you can see the resemblance to the pheasants in the less colorful peahens.

Indian_Peahens_I_IMG_9647

The first mention of these birds was by Linnaeus, the 18th Century scientist.  Males raise their  fan tails  and dance during the courtship period to try to impresses the hen. Mostly the  peafowls are found on the ground or in a open forest setting where they hunt for small snakes, rodents, and berries. They can fly as seen in this picture, but it is quite cumbersome and unwieldy. Quite an eerie sight, wouldn’t you say?

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

We did see them perched high-up on the corners of buildings in our lane. They are quite shy and avoid dogs and people as much as possible.

There is a history of screaming peacocks used as prison guards in Istanbul in the film “Midnight Express.”  A must see film for any students going to study abroad who might engage the thought of smuggling  some cheap  dope home to the States.  That thought would never enter my head, but the  movie, from years ago,  is still fresh in my memory.

Guest post : The Disturbed Characteristics of Children Processed by Modern Factory Schooling

This is truly disturbing. . . . .

inkupp's avatarinkupp

By Mr Gatto

Let me draw a quick profile of the New York City kids I’ve taught in recent years, it applies to rich kids as well as poor ones, although the prosperous kids are better able to cover up these things. …

The children I teach are indifferent to the adult world, they are hardly curious at all about what grown up people really do. The children I teach, in fact, have little curiosity about anything; they can’t even concentrate for very long on activities of their own choice.

The children I teach have a poor sense of the future, of how today is connected to tomorrow, they live in a continuous present, the exact moment they are in being the boundary of their consciousness.

The children I teach have an equally poor sympathy with the past, with no apparent understanding of how the past created their present, their…

World’s 5 Biggest Reading Nations

Very interesting information. I am sad, but not surprised about the US! Namaste. . . .Anne

Ankit Shah's avatarAnkit Shah's Blog

In the modern world, an information deprived person is the most ignorant person. So in order to access oneself with the world’s information, reading is one such habit that can accomplish that. India dedicating 10 hours per week of their time have top the list of the big reading nations.

As listed by NOP World Culture Score(TM) Index, the top five countries with the maximum readership are as follows-

1. India-

India which is one of the developing nations with a home to 1.2 billion people with different cultures and traditions has topped the list as the most reading nation among the thirty countries surveyed.

Since Indian education is mostly theoretical, most kids grow up reading their syllabus books and later newspaper and magazine are the most read one.

In this country with a diverse populations, most of the people are an avid reader be it the school going kids…

Shopping . . . . .IKEA . . . . Eileen Fisher. . .

Image

Yesterday, we made a run to Paramus New, Jersey to the nearest IKEA.  David wanted some lights and I went along for the ride.   I had a wonderful surprise on the way home!  This is a partial reblog.

ikea3

Very neat and well equipped children’s playroom!

Only drawback for some people is that the furniture comes in flat boxes , yes for you or someone you love to assemble after you get the items home. Directions and all the hardware are supposed to be in the box with simple instructions. . . hmm.   The stores will now deliver and assemble everything from kitchen cabinets to beds….for a fee , of course. This is most helpful for the New York City renters who have no cars and come over to Jersey on the bus.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Some of my readers will recognize this immediately, but my Indian friends won’t , not yet anyway.  Let me start at the beginning of the story and tell it as briefly as possible. Ingvar Kempard started this company in Sweden in 1942.  The name is a compilation of his initials and the initials of his farm town. As a very young boy, Kempard had sold matches on the streets to help his family.  His heart has always been for the middle class and this is his business plan.

“We will offer a wide range of well-designed functional furniture products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.”

It is necessary to sell in huge quantities in order to follow that plan and also be successful. There huge bright blue and yellow stores, visible for miles, are only in large metropolitan areas. The one million people living in the tri-city area of Upstate New York doesn’t have one.  On Thursday, we drove to Paramus , New Jersey which is the nearest to where we live.   There are actually 3 stores in the greater New York area with its 20 million population.

The pictures give you an idea about the showrooms, furnishings and storage systems. I am sure it  will be a hit in India as there is cramped space  just like in Europe where Ikea is wildly popular.  Yes, India has reached an agreement with IKEA with a proposed 1.95 billion dollars to build 25 stores.  This is the largest foreign investment that India has agreed to so far, though H&M, a very popular Swedish clothing store, is waiting not too patiently to be approved as well as some American companies.

When and where will the IKEA stores be built in India? The perfect location is a never compromised. They need 10 acres close to a highway with good visibility and good infrastructure with  public transportation, if possible. Each site will employ 800 Indians from carpenters to cashiers.  As of now , the concentration of inquiry has been in the largest cities. . . .Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore , and Hyderabad.

My  architect says that the best part about IKEA is that it is well designed, and affordable.  Modernity was all about simple, affordable, efficient things for the masses, but we all know of very expensive “modern” stores with  nothing affordable to the middle class. Mr. Kempard was an entrepreneur who  had a vision and a plan that it is still working very profitably today.

Surprise stop on the way home at  the Eileen Fisher Company Store at Harriman Outlets , where my favorite clothes are sold and at a fraction of the  horrible retail prices.  Eileen Fisher designs elegant, simple clothes with lovely details , and  fabric  of basic interchangeable colors and absolutely no prints!  The only drawback is the prices but I am fortunate enough to live about 2 hours to outlet stores.  Have you noticed that elegant but simple seems always to equal expensive?  Yesterday, I found several warm sweaters , one  of which was 75% off the retail price. Gives you an idea . . . . .

Linen-and-recylced-cotton-poncho-and-Tencel-dress

Though I am neither this young or thin, the clothes suit all ages and sizes.

neutrals_naturals_01

I do love the angles which are quirky yet interesting and not over done.

Yesterday was a frivolous, fun day.. . . . David got his lights , we both had Swedish meatballs.. . . . and I got some warm clothes.  We  blessed to be able to do all this!

Protecting the Powerless

” No reform is possible unless some of the educated and the rich voluntarily accept the status of the poor. . . . .and instead of taking avoidable hardships, discourtesies and injustice as a matter of course, fight for their removal.”   Mahatma Gandhi

This is one of the TV  segments that I enjoyed very much during my time in India. images (18)

People would nominate  their heroes who are making a difference where they lived. At the end of the year, ten are selected as heroes and finally one is chosen as the hero of the year. I would like to  introduce you to three of the heroes and include YouTube video for each, for those of you have a few minutes to watch and be inspired.  There are so many challenges in India and it would be easy to just throw up ones hands and say “It has always been this way, so what can I do about it?” These two men and one woman decided to try.

Narayanan Krishnan lived in Madurai. He was a rising star in the  culinary world being on the short list for a 5 star restaurant in Switzerland. One day he saw an old, sick man so hungry that he was “eating his own human waste.”  At that pivotal moment Narayanan changed his life’s path.  He now cooks and feels 400 souls a day and some literately.  Please watch his video:

Next, I would like to introduce you to Praksh Rao who has a tea stall in  Cattack.  He provides free education for slum children who otherwise would have no education. There are some government schools nearby but the parents who have to scavenge find it hard to get the children to school.  Mr. Rao’s school is right in the area and provides 60 students education up through grade 3. There are 4 teachers whom he pays.  All this from a tea stall owner’s wages. He also has found a way to provide for limited medical services for these needy people including  blood transfusions.

The last hero is  Priti Patkar, a woman in Mumbai who runs a night shelter for the children of prostitutes.  At first, that was rather shocking to me, but she explained.  Prostitutes’ children would have to come with their mothers when they work and thus be exposed to all kinds of child abuse.  Priti provides meals, beds and safe shelter  during the nights for these children. She is providing immediate safety and grooming them for a life other than the sex trade.

Inhumanity? Insanity? What would you call this?

So hard to believe such injustice. . . .

Aparna's avatarA Silent Self Wave..

girlI saw her on a bed in the hospital. She was all alone, no relatives no friends nearby. Only tears in eyes and a 1-day old baby next to her. Her face showed her helplessness, her disappointment, her anger, probably her urge to end this life.

I wondered what would have happened to her? For every woman, the day when she gives birth to baby is the most special day of her life. The happiness cannot be compared to anything else in this world. Then why is this lady so depressed?

I didn’t know if it was fine to go and ask her directly. I was in the hospital for my regular check-up when I had a glimpse of her. Do I have any rights to interfere in others personal space?

I know how a would-be mother and a new mother feel about the baby. I am counting days myself…

IN THE GARDEN OF BEASTS by Erick Larson

Image

Erik Larson’s  narrative history is  set in Berlin in 1933 and  is told  through the eyes of a visiting American family. Not just any family, but Ambassador Dodd and his wife and two children. The ambassador was a Professor of History from the University of Chicago who was soon called “an old fuddy duddy” because he would rather read than go to the numerous embassy parties.  Martha, his grown daughter  is quite a flirt and has rather an extensive love life with Americans, Germans, and Russians during her time in Berlin.

The insidious slow gathering away of freedoms by Hitler and his men eventually  turned into the gathering of horror of the Third Reich. People were executed for improper salutes, and some just disappeared. SA ( Storm Troopers) encouraged neighbors to denounce neighbors, Jews were banned from government jobs, then restricted from jobs as doctors and lawyers.

Even Dr. Dodd as a respected historian was unable to see that something really insidious was right around the corner for  Germany and the world. Maybe it was a blind eye or a reluctant eye . At first he  thought rumors of German brutality and horror were exaggerations at worst and untrue at best. But slowly he discovered the rumors were not rumors at all. He became convinced that Hitler was not only bad for Germany, but bad for the world.

“Beneath the surface, however, Germany had undergone a rapid and sweeping revolution that reached deep into the fabric of daily life. It occurred quietly and largely out of easy view.” Larson

The reader is included in the “Night of Long Knives” where over 85 people are slaughtered  as Hitler’s Gestapo and SS moved against the SA and it’s leader Rohn.

“Hindsight tells us that during that fragile time the course of history could so easily have  been changed. Why then did no one change it? Why, then, did it take so long to recognize the real danger and evil posed by Hitler and his regime?”  Larson

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke

“There were too few good men. Too few listened or spoke as Hitler slowly reduced rights and freedoms one by one across Germany. No one acted, and suddenly it was too late.”   Lita Perna

A film starring Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman is scheduled for release in 2014.

Three Flawed Politicians

130708_eliot_spitzer_media_ap_605

For those who have gotten past the title……thanks.  This year there are two very unusual races in New York City. Former  Governor Eliot Spitzer   has just thrown his hat in the ring to run for the Comptroller of  the city. What is unusual in that you might ask? Well he has quite the record in New York.  He  was a tenacious Attorney General ,known as “The Sheriff of Wall Street” in his search for  financial misdeeds.  Later, he was elected governor of New York State.  In his second year,it was discovered that he was using a  high-end call girl service. ( I notice I used a pun…hmmm)He had not been using public or campaign funds so he was never  prosecuted.  The thousands of dollars he spent , were his own funds.  Now he says that after five years of being away from public service he wants to reinvent the position of comptroller to be a  more activist position modeled on the financial watchdogs he instituted as governor. Mr. Spitzer says he has  confessed, punished himself by resigning, spent 5 years away, and now is asking the voters of New York City to forgive him.  He wants the voters to decide after they review his record.

1369404006000-weiner-nycmayor-001-1306261741_4_3_rx404_c534x401

This is Anthony Weiner who is running for mayor of New York City. He was born in the Brooklyn , served in City Council  and won a seat in the House of Representatives at the age of 27.  He served for 13 years.  He was a unapologetic old fashioned democrat in the years of George Bush.  The media loved his vocal and harsh opinions but the members of his   party thought he enjoyed his time before the camera more than substantive work in the House. In May 1211, it was discovered that Mrs. Weiner was sexting on the net. At first, he denied the charges saying someone must have used his computer. Later he confessed and resigned. As he announced  his run for Mayor this week,  he admitted to making big mistakes , but hoping for a second chance to work for  New York’s middle class.

Both of their wives have stayed with their husbands through this trying time.

M_Id_373842_Narendra_Modi

This is Nareda Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the state where we lived in India. It is thought that he will be the Prime Minister candidate of the BJP party next year in the elections.  India has maintained the English Parliamentary System, so people vote for representatives of a party and they elect the Prime Minister. He has been Chief Minister of Gujarat since 2001. He was born and raised in a lower middle class family in Gujarat.  He has recently been given a national position in his party seemingly to signal their support for him. He has started lunching with ambassadors from the European Union and even hosted an international conference on economic development in January attended by leaders from around the world. A few years ago, this would not have happened as Mr. Modi was shunned by the world because of his reported complicity in the 2002 Communal Riots in Gujarat.   Mr. Modi is a devout Hindu and criticism has been raised by many as to whether  he can be a secular leader in a country with so many devoted followers of many religions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkzJ18b5fDk    A six minute video of the Communal Riots of 2002 made by Canadian Broadcasting Company

Mr. Modi has worked hard to overcome this reputation and  tries in his speeches to be secular.  To his favor, there have been no further riots against the Muslims living in Gujurat.  He is well known for the economic success he has had in Gujarat where his  new pro-business policy has been dubbed “The Gujarat Model” . During his time in office, the Indian per capita income has almost tripled. In 2003, the per capita in India was $530 and now it is $1600. Mr. Modi says the Gururat success has added much to the higher per capita in the country.   These people are all aspiring to the middle class. Mr. Modi is considered by the business and middle class to be the “man who delivers.”

Now the quandary.  Do these three men who want to serve in pubic life , but are flawed, deserve the opportunity? Should they be forgiven and allowed a second chance?  I am a Christian and I believe in repentance, confession and , redemption. I don’t know their hearts, only God does.  We are told to forgive 70 times 7.  Most religious models have similar teaching.  We must pray, observe , and vote. Both countries have that great gift and responsibility to vote. The electorate will watch these men, study their records, and   decide the question of whether or not they vote for or against these three flawed politicians.

Namaste. . . . . T I I and T I N Y
