Indian Summer by Alex von Tunzelmannn The Secret History of the End of the Empire

When I heard about  a seminar on India at the Troy Public Library, I was very excited and braved the low temperatures and the icy streets to attend. We were to read, discuss, and connect  a novel and a non-fiction book on India to India.   I prefer non-fiction more than novels these days, so I am sharing this first.  Way back during my time in India, I gave you some books if you , too, are interested in learning through the power of books. Here is one more.  I was traveling yesterday, so I have not finished reading this but I think you can get the idea.

The Indian Summer is history that comes alive with von Tunzelmann’s narrative history-writing. You will meet all the main characters of the the story of partition of India: the triad  of  Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah, the three men who shaped history, their personal history and their Indian public history. You will meet Lord Mountabatten and his wife Edwina, and the Duke of Windsor and how their lives and  ideas  intertwined to write the history of India. There are stories, too,  of the common men and women and how their lives were affected because of the decisions made by the main characters. All together they joined the trail of the pilgrims’ progress of India.

I will use some of Ms. von Tunzelmann’s  words to give you an idea of  her elegant storytelling.

“On a warm summer night in 1947, the largest empire the wold had ever seen did something no empire had done before. It gave up.  The British Empire did not decline, it simply fell; and it fell proudly and majestically onto is own sword. It was not forced out by revolution, nor defeated by a greater rival in battle. Its leaders did not tire or weaken. Its culture was strong and vibrant. Recently it had been victorious in the century’s definitive war.

When midnight struck in Delhi on the night of 14 August 1947, a new free Indian nation was born”   Page 3 von Tunzelmann

“In the beginning, there were two nations. One was a vast, mighty and magnificent empire, brilliantly organized and culturally unified which dominated a massive swath of the earth. The other was an underdeveloped, semi-feudal realm rived by religious factionalism and barely able to feed its illiterate, diseased and sinking masses. The first nation was India. The second was England. The year was 1577. . . . . . . ” p. 11 von Tunzelmann

“India today is not Gandhi’s India, though there remains an enormous affection for him.  There are element of Gandhi’s India  in the  nation’s spirituality;  elements of Nehru’s India in its education, culture and technology;  elements of Jinnah’s India in the parts that remain outside ; and even element of the Montabatten’s India in the continuing membership of the Commonwealth held by India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Though the echoes of 1947 still resonate around Kashmir, and Jinnah’s Pakistanis have taken a very different route from the one he might have wanted, the vast and diverse nation of India has its sights fixed firmly on the future. ” p. 318 von Tunzelmann.

Welcome to India 2013 documentary 3 EMBED for Day 6 Zero to Hero

I have used videos before, but sometimes they are embed and other times not, I was never quite sure how. But I learned that I need to use the complete address of the video.
This is the third of three videos from the BBC and is set in Kokata which used to be called Calcutta. Visit a fish market , a family of the fish monger, and see the celebration of Burga Punja.
You probably have heard of Mother Theresa ministering to the sick and dying in the streets of Calcutta. It is one of the largest cities in India, and thus the world!
The old dog has learned another new trick!

Zero to Hero Day # 5 Love Your Theme

zero-to-hero

What  a strong metaphor of buying a house and starting a blog, choosing the neighborhood, knowing your needs and style, and content in both areas. I am the kind of person who doesn’t like too many choices as it all begins to run together.  Usually, I can choose pretty quickly and then don’t want to see lots more choices.  I much prefer a small grocery store as I make a list, in the order things come in the store, and I shop quickly without lots of looking at things not on my list. My architect will take hours in the grocery market reading labels and checking out new things. It drives me to distraction as I just want to get out and on to the next task!

When Erin was helping me set-up the blog, I knew immediately that the theme I chose fit my idea of the blog as reflected in the title. . . .TalesAlongTheWay with the path and the traveler!  In the last eleven months I still like it.  Everyday , I see the beautiful blogs with lots of detail and decoration and I admire them as being very beautiful.  Sometimes they are very confusing, though,  like all the choices in the grocery store.   Is this my response because I don’t want to struggle with the technology?  That is certainly part of it, but I hope not all of the reason.  I know that how things look certainly does affect the first and often the lasting opinion.  I do want people to read my blog . . . .  writing is for reading.

So neighborhood, style and content. .  . .the greatest of these to me is content.  I do spend lots of time on choosing the topic and writing it. Now before you think it is because I am another generation from most of my blogger friends, I do like to learn new things and try them out. So, I have  made arrangements for someone to help me in person  around the middle of the month with the widgets and any other  technology that is suggested that I am not doing.

For me the joy of blogging is connecting with other bloggers through my choice of topics and or my writing style. Nothing makes me happier than to have an Indian friend say, “I love to see my country though your eyes!” or someone says “Thank you for painting a word picture that I was able to see in my mind!”  So I can’t wait to start writing for the challenge and trying with some direction to improve my blog’s content!

Many thanks for all your encouragement and friendship as we travel this blogging road together!

Zero to Hero Challenge Day #4

zero-to-hero Yes, I already know how to use the Reader which was part of our task.  I adjusted the prompt just  a tad. Oh, as a teacher I hated when kids didn’t follow the “cold prompt”, but this challenge is not preparation for state tests, is it?    I read through some of the posts and chose five of my fellow challengers to like and follow instead of  topics.  Here are the posts I chose and a little about each.

1.  anniethinksabout.wordpress.com  Annie’s issues about blogging are different from mine, but I liked her openness and honesty about her addictions.  And  we share a name!

2. vaudevillehippie.wordpress.com   The title grabbed me immediately. I loved the humor of this team of creative and spontaneous artists.

3. myendlessrantsandramblings.wordpress.com This blog is to be a memory book and that was my thought when I began my India/travel blog.

4. bobbiesnickers.wordpress.com  This one was a definite choice  when I read the plea for help making those darn widgets!  Another technological challenged blogger!

5. countrythatrocks.wordpress.com This is another  blogger who is feeling her/his  way, but with such a clear, simple and elegant  writing style.

Onward and upwards to a stronger blog!

Zero to Hero Day #3 Lucky Indian Children

zero-to-hero-badge

cultural-india

Children who are born in India are lucky.  Why, you might ask? There are so many   challenges there, malnutrition, lack of basic sanitation for 50% of population, trash, and lack of meaningful work.  Yes, of course those are true, but there are other things much more obscure that seem to make a difference.  It took a while for me to even begin to understand and try to articulate this. And I have come to the conclusion that is a combination of factors that work to provide what I will call stability for want of a better word. These children know from where they and their families come as history is ever present in architecture, and the 22 different dialects spoken in the country.  They all will be  born into a family with a strong faith system, probably Hindu, but also Muslim, Christian, Sikh or Buddhist. India is known as the most  spiritual country in the world. I have told tales of the divisions in these faith systems and those are sad, but day to day all seem to live and work peacefully  side by side.

The next  element  that is a  blessing to the children is the strong presence of family, both nuclear and extended. The children learn to work, respect others,  relate to others, and they feel loved by at least one of the many people with whom they live.  They don’t come home to an  empty house or eat at a quiet, lonely  table.

Lastly, I think that  celebrations that are continuously happening, secular, religious, one or the other, dancing and singing just make an air of joy even in the midst  of poverty. There is a hope that is filling  the air now for  a better  life after the  2014 elections. Each Indian stands in line  for hours to vote and feels strongly that it is a right and  responsibility as well as a duty in  the world’s largest democracy, not just for the rich and educated but for all. On election day , they all equal.

My husband and I talked about this wonderful spirit that  seemed to surround us in India. He is all about architecture and touring but the people really made a positive impression on him. His thoughts agreed with me on this one.  These are precious happy, gentle  people  who get so much  joy from simple things like dancing in the streets, throwing powdered dye at each other to celebrate Holi in the spring,  and watching the sky filled with kites.  Just like they have adapted to life in slums, they have found simple yet lovely things to enrich their lives . They find joy in little things. . .  . .so do the children.

Zero to Hero Day #2

zero-to-hero-badge

I can play the helpless southern lady to perfection after years of practice.  But  in fairness to myself, I am pretty sure I just assume I can’t do certain things . . . . . especially technological  tasks.   I am pumped that with some pretty clear directions from  greetingsfromindia.wordpress.com,  I changed the tagline, and entered Zero to Hero on  on my post page.  Until now, I didn’t even know I had a tagline!  Well, I knew that statement  was on the top of the page, but Erin, my tech angel, had set me up with the blog in India.  She did all these tasks for me.  I can’t wait to tell  her!

I have decided  to keep the original name of TalesAlongTheWay because it is clear and easy to remember. It does indicate travel, learning, and  stories.  I did  change the tagline. The new one is: Life’s journey to discover tales of history, culture, and faith from New York to India and places along the way.  The first one was more ambiguous. The new one is a tad long. . . . .isn’t it hard to be clear in just a few words?

And for the widget, I am not sure it is actually one  but the title of the challenge is there. That is better than nothing, right?

I can’t resist telling just one  story about the name of the blog.  When I was talking about doing this and thinking of names, I was going to have a blog about India and was going to use it in the title. My son, Christian, suggested that I might not want to limit myself when we returned to New York. After all, I had loved teaching writing and really enjoyed  being part  of Mesa Writing Project. He was right and I  have continued telling  tales from New York, Italy, and places along the way including  more tales from incredible India.

Here I sit waiting for directions for Day #3!

Now you know the rest of  the story of naming TalesAlongTheWay  . . . . . . . . . .

zero-to-hero-badge All of us bloggers want to improve our writing, and that includes me, too. My friend  at http://greetingsfromindia.wordpress.com/about/   told me about this challenge that WordPress has thrown out for the first 30 days in 2014.  Since I have nearly 280 posts, I am going to rework posts that fit into the topic of the day.  I might also write additional posts depending on time.  I am addicted. . . . . As a teacher, I knew without a doubt that writers get better by writing and also reading strong writing from others.  Time to  put that into action here ! Here is the introduction post. I am really technologically challenged but I am trying. You need to add a tag to each post that is zerotohero and also go and sign-up . To be considered for the challenge, you must post every day in January.  I  wanted my readers to understand why I was reblogging my ABOUT.  The first post in the challenge is an introduction of you and your  blog.  Try it, and if it is too much or doesn’t work out, just stop…no harm done! Here is the link to read the details. . . . . hope to see you in the zerotohero challenge! http://dailypost.wordpress.com/zero-to-hero/

locator-map-Ahmedabad (1) Namaste!

I am a storyteller and a teacher.  For years I have shared with students my adventures traveling the world with my family. The most popular stories were  the tales from the ancient world. . . .Rome, Egypt, Greece.  And when my professor husband  was taking  architecture students to India to learn and travel, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Through my eyes and words, I want each of you, students, family, grandchildren, and bloggers  to experience this exotic, ancient country.

India, which is standing on the brink of becoming a world power, is one of the oldest and most influential cultures in the history of the  world.  Sadly in the west, it is not so well known. I will share tales along the way from  my four month journey.  It won’t be a journal blog, but more a collection of postcards. I will tell tales of  ancient, as well as modern India,  share pictures and  stories through my words and eyes that will allow you to join me.  Writing is to be read and the discipline of writing my memories  will insure that I have written tales at  the end. Please  ask questions and comment.  The dialogue will spur me on!

India is indeed incredible and not just an example of alliteration.  Even after my months back in New York, memories, news stories, and pictures  pop into my mind to  remind me of that far off magical place, so I am still sharing.

This quote of a blogger friend sums up so clearly my thoughts on India :

“India leaves her mark on her guests in a most haunting, compelling, and often surprising way. I suspect that even now you are trying to figure out how to get back there!”                       – From Ninagrandiose’s blog

Ninagrandiose, that is how I feel exactly!

It is my dream to visit India again next year, please read  my blog  and discover why!
