‘Nebraska” the Movie

NEBRASKA-MOVIE-01-1024x734

I had really wanted to see this film. . . . a  black and white road trip, but professor suggested that we watch it at home on Netflix.  He was thinking it was not going to be his cup of tea, and he could then read a book or something!  He was wrong and I was right. We both loved it!

It is a bittersweet personal journey of Woody (Bruce Dern) who drinks too much, talks to little and cusses most of the time.  He is old and sick and slowing slipping away. But this all changes when he received a notice that he has won $1,000.000.00 sweepstakes prize in the mail . It is one of these notices we all have received and tossed in the garbage, but Woody “believes what people tell him” and is determined to  get to Lincoln, Nebraska  to collect his prize even if he has to walk the hundreds of miles.

The journey metaphor continues with the old man’s dream, and his son David’s journey to understand and accept his father’s personality, needs,  dream, and past life.

 There is even a family reunion. . . . . . . old-people-watching-tv (1)

Ah, the humor . . . . . is hilarious.  I thought of ‘Fargo’ when it was much funnier seeing it with a crowd in the theater, but ‘Nebraska’ is tear dropping funny as the characters just say what they say and do what they do. And there were some tears, at least mine for the poignant moments. I was worried about the ending but it was a delightful surprise.  There is no hint of the director making fun of these simple people but just  him sharing a loving family tale.  The story just happens between heartbreak and hilarity as experienced in this family.

Music Monday Lynyrd Skynrd ‘Sweet Home Alabama’

Lynyrd Skynrd is an American rock band best known for  popularizing southern hard rock in the 1970s.

800px-Lynyrd_Skynyrd_(1973) (1)

At the peak of their success, three members were tragically killed in a plane crash in 1977. But in 1987, the remaining band members reformed the group and still enjoy popularity today.

Lynyrd_2008_(1)

They never forgot that the crowd loves ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and the  always go with ‘the one that brought em!” I chose the video  from the 70s as I got a kick out of the hair and clothes styles.  This video had over  17 million + hits!

I was at a fund raiser in Phoenix when a country band sang ‘Sweet Home Arizona’ which seemed a sacrilege  to me!   I am not from Alabama but am proudly  from the ‘southland.’

So far, I know only two people on the face of the earth who don’t like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and one is our oldest granddaugther.  Professor loves to tease her with repeated playing when we are in the car and she can’t escape!

I would love to hear from my blogger friends  and why you think this song has such universal appeal.

This Is 1970s Southern Rock and Roll!

Beware the Ides of March !

It was the year 44 BC and Julius Caesar was at the top of his game, or so he thought. A respected seer had predicted his assassination on the Ides of March (March 15).  As he walked to the Theater of Pompey for a meeting of the Senate, he saw the seer in the crowd.  He said in a cocky way, “See, everything is fine with me!”  She warned, “The day is not yet over!”  At the theater, all 60 senators led by Cassius and Brutus were waiting to  stab Cesar  with the knives hidden in their togas. On that day Julius Cesar breathed his last breath being stabbed by men he counted as friends.

Here is the statute to Julius Cesar standing just outside his Forum. And each year, flowers are laid at his feet, on the ground around him, or on his grave in the Forum to commemorate the turning point in Roman history when the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire at the death of Cesar. Ironically, the senators killed him because they feared he was going to declare himself king.  And his adopted son, Augustus later did that very thing.

Flowers on the grave inside the Forum.

I have visions of people my age, who were required to study Latin for preparation for college, placing flowers to  honor  the great general.  All I can remember in way of tribute  is one grand statement Cesar made after a successful battle:

“Veni, Vidi, Vici!”   I came, I saw, I conquered!

HOLI- Spring Festival of Colors in Gujurat, India

Don’t miss this video: WOW!

Holi begins with bonfires all over the city the night before where people gather to sing and dance. The next morning  begins a wild carnival atmosphere of chasing people and throwing dry powder or colored water

using water guns or water balloons. Everyone outside is fair game, family, adult, child, friend or strangers! Holi is a national holiday in all of India. Today, March 15, 2014 is Holi this year.

Holi is celebrated at the approach of the vernal equinox based on the Hindu calendar. It is the celebration of good over evil and the arrival of spring (sweaters are no longer needed!) It is a holiday to laugh, love, play, forget ,  and repair relationships.

We, all dressed in white and went to Cept University  for a wild time! We were the only professors in the crowd. There was a pit full of water in the sand field where revilers were thrown in the water.  Thankfully our age and position were respected and we weren’t manhandled.  There was a huge pot of chai and we had some. Later the students gleefully told us it had been laced with “hash”. They got a huge laugh out of the fact we didn’t know, but no one told US!  Truthfully, I was no more loopy  than usual. . . . .

I discovered,in my reading, that there is a huge Yogi-Holi Festival of Colors in Spanish Fork Utah. There is a video if you are interested.

We wanted to start a Holi celebration here, but it is spring break and the weather is most definitely winter!   If ever you are in India at this time of year,  check the calender as this is awesome fun!

Why caste still matters in India | The Economist

I would love to have my Indian friends comment on this. Do you agree? Why or why not?

owner@chindia-alert's avatarCHINDIA ALERT: You'll be living in their world, very soon

INDIA’S general election will take place before May. The front-runner to be the next prime minister is Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party, currently chief minister of Gujarat. A former tea-seller, he has previously attacked leaders of the ruling Congress party as elitist, corrupt and out of touch. Now he is emphasising his humble caste origins. In a speech in January he said “high caste” Congress leaders were scared of taking on a rival from “a backward caste”. If Mr Modi does win, he would be the first prime minister drawn from the “other backward classes”, or OBC, group. He is not the only politician to see electoral advantage in bringing up the subject: caste still matters enormously to most Indians.

The country’s great, liberal constitution was supposed to end the millennia-old obsession with the idea that your place in life, including your occupation, is set…

Elephant Race at Guruvayoor Temple

Yesterday, I saw this elephant race on the news. . . .yes in the United States. Everyone  loves these giant animals!  This video was filmed a couple of years ago as this year’s race hasn’t been posted yet.  I really appreciated the quality of this video, the shots of the tourists, and Indians, the city, in Kerala, south India, the temple entrance, and of course the elephants.  The excitement, anticipation, and joy in such simple pleasures. . . . .  are all just so India!

Have to say that those skinny Indian men  must have some  sore bottoms today. We rode on sauntering elephants and it was very  rough and uncomfortable and they are riding bareback!

Lunch at the Canteen of Cept University

DSCN4398

Namaste. . . . . .

Isn’t this a wonderful meeting place to rest in the shade, visit with friends, meet new people or eat a meal? One day, I met some boys from Afghanistan who were not studying architecture but another design curriculum.  I tried to do some one on one personal diplomacy!

Back to lunch!  This is a full lunch that was available everyday, with choices  available during lunch and supper hours.

100_2933

This was a “full” lunch which was roti, ( the flat bread), rice or vegetables like cabbage with some raw vegetable ( which we didn’t eat) , not sure what the right hand corner is. It looks like meat but this is “total veg” restaurant.  I think maybe it is “aloo ” which is chunks of  potatoes. ( Maybe one of my Indian food experts can tell us. )  At the bottom left is dal, soupy beans, sweets, and yogurt on the right. Notice the spoon for eating.  Gujuratis usually use their bread and dip or pick-up the food with their hands.  We started having yogurt with every meal like the Indians that really helped with digestion. My favorite is mango lassi, a drink that sadly has lots of calories.  All this meal cost about $0.70 in dollars! And as far as we can tell, none of us ever were sick from eating at the canteen.  That is a very good thing.

Well, if you are not quite hungry enough to eat all that food , there is a half-portion:IMG_4057

You can see the vegetables clearer in this shot. Peas are mutter. And this “small” portion is $0.30 in dollars and more than enough. A soda was 100 rupees or $2.00 but that seemed reasonable to us. There were juices, water bottles and cookies for sale.  This is where we would eat Poah for breakfast that I posted months ago.https://talesalongtheway.com/2013/06/01/poha-for-breakfast/  Someone told us this canteen is subsidized by the government for the students and many eat all their meals there.

The canteen is not just a meeting place for students, visitors, faculty and staff, but there are always four legged visitors as well. images (9)

Mama dog and puppies and the proverbial begging , stealing monkeys!  IMG_0045

This young dog who seems to be on his own, finds lots of left-overs.

Now you have some small pictures as to why the professor said that he and I were the only people in the history of the India Program who come back to the States heavier than when we left. . . . .lots of delicious Indian food and we loved it all!

Decorah Eagles Live from Their Nest

http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

DecorahEagleMomFirstEgg2014 (1)

I was so excited when I remembered this site.  It is the #1 most viewed live video of all times!  A live streaming webcam is trained on bald eagles in their nest in Decorah Iowa at the Raptor Resource Project.  It became the #1 most viewed website when it reached 250 million on Upstream in 2011.

The nesting season is January, February with the ‘fledge’ in June.

800px-Decorah_eaglets,_2011

It is filmed in real time and you may see delivery of freshly caught prey, feeding of the eaglets, protection of the eggs or eagles from the weather and/ or prey.  Just eagles being eagles!   Infrared light permits 24/7 filming.

800px-Decorah_bald_eagle_parents

DecorahFirstEgg2014

My classes  in Arizona ,during that 2011 season, contributed to the record breaking viewers. This was the year I first learned about this live stream.  The kids would watch it at home and during any break at school.  We researched and learned about eagles and their life habits.

WARNING: Viewing live eagles, up close and personal is very ADDICTING and not at all like watching paint dry !

‘Her’ The Movie

large_zbVhV2v1j69nvwHp2r8kjawI6H9

This is spring break week at the university , and since we went to Hawaii in January, it is movie time for us! I dragged the professor away from a marathon of ‘Breaking Bad’ and we deiced to see ‘Her.’ I can remember when science fiction films were hard to imagine, but not this one.

‘Her’ is set in the future of Los Angeles, maybe 50 years. Everyone is walking around with buds in their ears talking to a virtual friend. The protagonist is Theodore ( Joaquin Phoenix, who was quite outstanding). The stage was set in the opening scenes when we find out that his job is writing  beautifulhandwrittenletters.com!   In this time and place, ‘people’ hire others to write letters to their loved ones that are rendered by computers in old-school cursive penmanship!her_movie.jpg.CROP.promovar-mediumlarge

Theodore is lonely and sad at the break-up of his marriage and decides to start a relationship with an OS1, operation system, and meets Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) through his first artificial smart phone. She is bright, and a  quick study to fit his needs. Their contact is of purely cerebral interaction in contrast  to bodily contact, even during  their times of physical intimacy.

The theme of the film was relationships, intimacy, and communications three important aspects of life. ‘Her’ is thought provoking as we decide  along with Theodore our thoughts concerning  the importance these   play in our lives and relationships.HER

Is this the future?
