Holy Cow. . . . Friend to Indians

Image

Mother Cow is the queen in the pantheon of sacred Indian animals. In fact, she stands head and shoulders above the rest. There are group all over Indian demanding the government name the cow as the national animal to replace the tiger which currently holds that honor. You might wonder how this all came about.  Many years before the  pyramids were built in ancient Egypt, or written law chiseled into stone by Hammurabi,  or paper invited by the Chinese, the Indian people had given up their nomadic wanderings. They had settled down to an agricultural lifestyle. This was before coins were used as money, and wealth was determined by the number of cows owned by the farmer. Cattle became legal tender and were used as payments, presented as dowry, and even used to pay the hated taxes!  Through the ages, cow’s milk has been often the only source of nourishment for India’s vast population.

Through the SUEB SHG I became aware that I could collect milk as a business.

Another gift from the cattle is the dung which is still used in construction  of rural  homes   and as insulation on walls, and as tiles for the floors. The cow pies are burned in the cold weather and used for cooking  as the only source of fuel for the Indian village dwellers.

When the cows stop producing milk, they are abandoned by the farmers because they are of no use anymore and can not be taken to the slaughter house. This is why they are cows strolling through the the chaotic city traffic serenely ignoring the madness all around them instead of grazing in a village field.

Recent studies have concluded that Indian cows hang around on busy streets because  the prolific exhaust fumes discourage flies which torture the bovines.   Another perk for the cows are that the toxins in the fumes make them high.  They often do appear very relaxed!  So the chaos they can cause stopping traffic and generally being in the way is quite a good place for them !

Pedestrians in India have to look right, left, right again when  crossing the crowded streets to avoid being hit by cars, rickshaws, camel pulled carts, motor bikes, pedal bikes, as well as glance down to avoid stepping in fresh cow dung.  We were told it was a “blessing” from the cow if we walked through the dung.  Though, we all loved getting blessings on our foreheads, we eagerly avoided the “foot blessing!”  Holy cow!

Earth, Wind & Fire . . .. . . . We Remember

23047-004-5115A804

Maurice White, the founder of Earth, Wind & Fire, one of the most successful bands of the 20 century, died last week.  The popularity of their sound was the fusion of so many genres in their music.  There was R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, Latin , and African sounds.

Yesterday, David was making his Sunday afternoon studio visit to see if the students needed to talk.  He was wearing his headphones. One of the students asked what he was listening to and he said just a band you probably don’t know,  Earth, Wind & Fire.

“We love, Earth, Wind & Fire! ”  Now that was not the respond he expected!

Fuelled by Indian Love

Do-all-the-good-you-can

Namaste!

Oh, I love this ad and the clear message of hospitality, kindness, generosity, and love  we felt from Indian people.  People invited us into their homes, Kuyur’s ‘s family fed us,  others gave us gifts mostly of food both  from Muckos the cook at the hostel and from the vendor where we bought water and snacks. Salim our favorite rickshaw driver had his wife cook for us twice and brought it to us  because his house where he and his extended family lived in one room in the Pols or center city was too small for all 12 of us.   All I can say is that this is true not a made up ad to get you to buy airline tickets.  I wish you all could experience it in person.. . . . . .

SHS 4th grade 1996

This was one of my favorite years and classes at Sacred Heart School.  One of the highlights was the trip to New York City and the wonder of it all for these guys. I will never forget  as we approached on the Jersey side in our tour bus, and  the Twin Towers came into view,

“Mrs. Bell, there really are two towers!”

“Yes, did you think I was making that up!”

And then on the ride home, something happened that had never happened before or since with students on the bus back to Troy.  I was in the front, happy but exhausted that all had gone well, and that no one had gotten lost !  Many of the students came up to me, by themselves or with a friend, squatted on the floor and said ,

“Thank you so much for the !”

or

“I will never forget this trip!”

And I hope they still do have happy memories of our time together. I learned along time ago, that adults do their jobs better when they are content, and feel respected in their work, so why wouldn’t students learn better in an atmosphere of acceptance, love, and fun?

Found this lovely “keepsake,” going through old stuff at my parents’ house last night!! Ohhh the good ol’ days of SHS! 😜😇 #tbt #memories #shs#4thgrade #howcutewerewe #wearegettingold

Honoring the 103rd Birthday of Rosa Parks

We are proud to honor today, her birthday.

Today, Dallas Area Rapid Transit is honoring Rosa Parks by reserving the front seat of more than 500 DART buses.

Rosa  Parks is most well-known for her act of defiance on a Montgomery, Alabama  bus on December 1, 1955 that changed the course of history. On that date, Ms. Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. She was arrested and fined. Four days later, in response to Ms. Parks’ arrest, a year-long bus boycott began. It ended when the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on public transportation was illegal.

Yes, this  is just a symbol but it also represents how things have changed in the “Old South.”   Richmond was the capital of the confederacy . Even today, you can visit the Museum and White House of the Confederacy.  Virginia and its capital Richmond have come a long way  from the days when the school system was closed during the 1950s and 60s  rather than be integrated.

I am proud to be a Virginian and  I have tried to keep my gentle Virginia accent, even while  not living there for years.  People will always ask where I am from.  I know exactly what they are asking and say, “I live in New York, but I am from Virginia!”

Coldplay in India Cultural Appropriation ?

Coldplay-video-1

Namaste!

Coldplay celebrating Holi in India in their new video. Holi is the Festival of Colors celebrated as the beginning of Spring, as people  toss  powered colors.

Color is the theme for the new song, ” Hymn for the Weekend  on Coldplay’s newest album “A Head Full of Dreams.”  I watched and listened, and loved it all.  Then I read some of the critics. Critics are paid to be critical and they came from their attack  in a must unexpected way for me!   Coldplay and Beyonce were admonished for cultural appropriation  for their use of the vivid images of India.

What?  The colors, faces, images were smiling and vibrant. Wouldn’t people be memorized with  it all?   I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry with it all.  I love India, but I am not an Indian person.  Are they upset by this video?  I have tried to be honest in sharing challenges in India , with a gentle touch but truthfully.  Am I really out of touch?  I have shared the news of the Indian Mars Mission rocket , beating the rest of the world, and the 70% turnout for the elections last year as the largest Democracy  on the earth.  But would those videos sell songs or encourage tourists to visit India’s  amazing culture?  I don’t think so  !

Please let me know what you think about this charge of “cultural appropriation”, especially my Indian friends. Are you offended?  Am I wrong?

Coldplay is the halftime show at the SuperBowl this weekend along with Beyonce.  Be sure to watch and see how it is handled as I am sure that “Hymn for the Weekend”, will be played.  There have been 24 million hits on this video in just four days!

Venice at Carnavale

AP-carnival-venice_2812828k

From January 23 – February 9, 2016, Venice will slough off the winter gloom and burst into life. During the Carnival (Carnevale), this most magical of cities fills with a mass of masked party-goers – posing and preening, dancing and philandering, in a slightly surreal re-invention of a great tradition of the city.Jan 22, 2016  www.telegraph.co.uk

Carnavale is an annual festival in Venice that ends with the beginning of lent, forty days before Easter on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.  It is world famous  for the elegant costumes and elaborate masks.

Venice is at  the  top of my list of favorite visited places, ever!  It is hard to have adjectives that do it justice, but magical in the text above is a good place to start.  We took students studying in Rome  to a weekend in Venice during Carnavele, years ago.  We had no idea of the beauty and quality of the costumes and intricate design of the masks we would see.  We walked through the windy, narrow lanes and bridges seeing these fanciful masked characters, parting the fog as they approached.  All were  on the way to the Piazza St Marco for dancing to the surround sound of bands in every corner of that  most beautiful urban space.

Be amazed!   Have any of you been to Carnavale or Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Rio de Janeiro?

Strangers become New Friends, if only for a moment. . . . .

Image

One Saturday in January 2013, we went to see the legendary Sun Temple in Modhera that dates from 1026 AD.  There were groups of school children of all ages on a field trip on a Saturday! All through our time in India, we saw students on field trips on weekend, days off from school.  They were learning about their faith, their culture, and their history.

There was so much to see, bats in the dome, a man with a monkey, a thousand year old temple, but  the students and adults were pushing to touch me and ask for a photo.

I am telling this story because the video below happened to me thousands of miles from New York.  I actually do speak to people on the street here or whenever there is close contact such as in an elevator. I was brought up to speak to people and I am very outgoing when I want to be. I have always enjoyed talking to people in line at the cinema , only for a few minutes and then they are gone. Everyone has a story.  David always laughs that people are telling me made up stories, but who knows?  It is fun for me.  So this instant connection with Indian people who are very friendly to start with, was an easy transition. Especially if I looked someone in the eye, smiled, said hello or stuck out my hand to shake, it was immediately returned with warmth and a smile and often a request for a photo.  We could understand why photos were snapped of  the students but the two of us?  But of course we always agreed to the photo  as did most of the students.

Here is a photo from our walking tour of the slum near Ghandi Ashram in Amdavad which happened one of the last few days of our time last year.  I used an old teacher trick to win the children over. . . . .hard candy!  I thought I would be overcome with emotion walking in the slum but it was a blessing to see the smiles and gentle souls welcoming us. Of course the candy was a hit even  some adults enjoyed it.  Honestly, the little sweet treat from me was a minuscule gift compared to the joy they gave me in return.

Now after all those words of my story, I do know that these brief  interactions between strangers can touch and change people’s beliefs and possibly prejudice.  Now having been in India for a total of 8 months  over two semesters, I can’t know or remember all the people with whom I interacted, but I have their faces, smiles, acceptance, and  yes love written in  my heart forever.   Watch and see what this video shows on the streets of New York City. It is possible. . . . . . .

Here is the blog , the first one, I wrote in India, in 2015.https://talesalongtheway.com/2013/02/21/rock-stars/

“Finest Hours”. . . . . A Film

AR-160118790

Disney’s new film opened last weekend. The subject is the true story of the most dramatic and successful  rescue the American Coast Guard  has ever made.  The story is set in Chatham, Massachusetts and the conflict of the wild, fierce Nor’Easter in the frightening Atlantic Ocean and the sailors .  This is a  town where the ocean is the central family member. . .  for the fisherman, Coast Guard, and summer tourists.  It is  also an  old fashioned adventure which wants to inspire more than entertain.  The year was 1952, long ago and far away.  There is little swearing and  no sex other than a kiss.  The female lead is rather too bossy and take charge for a 50s girl but her hair and clothes were wonderful.  This feel good story with real life heroes  and their sacrificial   love for their friends in need does make you proud.

We saw it in 3D which was enhancing.  I read that some pAndeople thought it dark and murky in 3D, but it was a stormy, dark and murky night in the storm.  We don’t usually like 3D but both enjoyed it in this film.  It is fun on the big screen, and true.  Good  positive inspirational film.

And yes, I did cry !

India’s Invisible Women

_73365145_p1010017

This is an ashram in India where widows live. They must shave their head, wear white, and beg for their meager life.  Their families are too poor to take them in to feed them  so this is where they live.   The young beautiful widows are forced into prostitution for money.  Widows are not allowed to remarry.  This is the fate even for  the child widows who are younger than twelve.

This week there was most unusual news that a wealthy man invited thousands of widows to his son’s wedding.  They were given bright colorful clothes, allowed to eat and dance. ( Widows are not allowed to participate in celebrations!) In return, they  were asked to give the young couple a blessing for their marriage.

Cultural beliefs and practices are so hard  to  change but I hope and pray others will follow with this generosity and love for these women.  After all, most, if not all, faith systems command “care for widows and orphans.”

This is a movie review of this situation in India.  It is available on Youtube.com and very interesting.
