In the Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York  Area –

Anne T. Bell would like everyone to know about a re-enactment of the amphibious landings at D-Day on this 19-20 August.  For further information, Please check out the official site.

I found out about this living history experience from Eric Montgomery who successfully worked for five years to correct  the information of  his great-uncle who is buried in Normandy.  He is one of the organizers for this yearly commemoration. What a wonderful experience to experience this day in world history and see the unselfish  courage of the troops  as we  remember our heroes.  This event is very well  attended and I was only able to reserve a hotel in Erie, PA about 30 minutes away from Conneaut.  See you there!

https://pacificparatrooper.wordpress.com/   This is a wonderful blog by G  P Cox about the  Pacific Paratroopers.  You won’t be disappointed to follow this blog if you are a history lover !

If you are on Face Book, check out Eric P. Montgomery’s daily posts. Today he had a tribute to a veteran who has “walked  his final post.” Be sure to like and follow.

You Want What Color Hair?

You have to be totally blind not to observe various hair  tips or streaks of color, these days.  I have seen women who have had their hair not only colored in some “nonhair” color like green, purple or pink but some of had their  hair colored to GRAY!  That is the one that amazes me since I pay to try to blend in the old blonde with the patches of natural gray I now have.  Life is indeed strange!  I am very jealous of the beautiful natural  Irish white hair.

This is Alice who had , preciously,  asked  her mom to “tip” her hair in green.  Turns out that  the non-permanent product to use is Cool Aid .  Worked fine and lasted through several washings. Alice was happy and mom was happy!

On one chilly morning at Canada Lake, the three girls persuaded Katie to use purple and tip their hair.  She agreed and decided to use foil   as in beauty shops after applying the pasty purple Cool Aid.   Here is a picture of the process and the  girls waiting in great anticipation to unfloil and be delighted with purple tips.

We left on the foils  almost an hour to insure new color especially for  the brunettes.    Bummer, not a purple strand in sight and no idea why !  Oh well,  off to the lake and a canoe ride!

The boys had been using  sayings all week. . . . If they were successful at something. . . . . they yelled  “AmeriCAN”. . . . . . . .

Now with the failed Cool Aid purple hair job. . . . .    It is . AmeriCAN’T !

 Sweet Memories. . . .  .

The Elusive Common Loon’s Unforgettable Voice

Loons are water birds, very shy, and lead a solitary life. They are carnivorous  as they are able to dive to depths of 200 feet in the lake water to feed themselves.  Their life of up to 30 years  is spent on the water except for mating and to incubate their eggs.   They are agile swimmers, and their flight can be up to 70 miles per hour.  Their movement on land is quite awkward.

Loons fascinate  people for two particular reasons: their flight and their call.

Their flight is a challenge as they take off from the water and  need just the right burst of wind as they  flap their wings wildly while “running ” down the runway of  the top of the lake.  I have never seen this  but it must be a sight to see!

We did see lone Loons swimming early in the morning or just at sunset during our week at Canada Lake. At first you might think they are ducks but the beak is more pointed and black in color. Ducks have different coloring with their yellow beaks and colored heads.

The Loon call is indescribable  but you will hear  it on the video. It is not a happy call, but perfect for a solitary bird checking to see if  it  is alone on the lake.  It is quite loud from a small bird and reverberates across the lake.

Another great memory from Canada Lake!

Nine Corner Lake

We discovered this gentle slope hike of one mile and one mile down. There is an amazing surprise at the top, a lake with a rope to   jump far out from the rocks into a deep, refreshing pool.   We  enjoyed it so much , we hiked a second time to the rope!

And here is the perfect Miss Anne Christmas card ! Chris snapped this on our hike down. Look at those smiles and the setting so perfect right at the division of a waterfall.  A place just perfect for those perfect children !

Here we are back on the dock.  The kids are dancing to my favorite song. .  . “Sweet Home Alabama!”   I am forever cold as I sit with my Indian shawl !

Each day we were thrilled with a colorful setting sun over Canada Lake !  Some days the sky was pink or sky blue pink as David calls it.  This day it was sky blue orange!

An Inspiring Indian Dad and Husband

This story will touch your heart, maybe even your tears.  Aditya Tiwari is an amazing young man.  First he was the youngest man in India to adopt a child at the age of 25.  And if that was not enough, the little boy has  Down Syndrome.  We have been to several large and beautiful wedding celebrations in India which continue for  seven days. From the picture it appears to me they could have had the days of celebrating with food, parties,  fireworks  but see how they chose to celebrate. . . . . . .

So much in the news highlights  people who have been blessed with money being selfish and not blessing others with their  gifts.  Please watch and discover Aditoya’s generous spirit. . .  . . the kind, gracious, loving spirit we  saw in action with our own eyes while we were in India!   Be inspired and do what you are able to  “love your neighbor and do for the least of these!”

Here is one of my favorite posts and there are many more !

Under the Hemlocks, Canada Lake

IMG_1424

This is Canada Lake, only an hour from where we live, near the Great Sacandaga Lake in the Adirondacks in New York State. Here are the grandchildren enjoying the view across the small, intimate lake.

The kids swam and swam and then skimmed over the water in kayaks  or  a canoe. They even took lake scrub  baths with mild Ivory soap.

Look at the crystal clear mountain water.  The concrete dock is the only one on the lake and a great place from which to swim or  fish, early in the morning or in the early evening.  The adults spent much time just sunning, and visiting while the kids swam!

This is the path  , step entrance  from the road. A visitor was struck by how Under the Hemlocks  resembles a Steven King setting !

It was a boys camp years ago when the father of the current owner,  owned and ran it.

The wide, comfortable porch  along with the dock were my two favorite places.  Sun shone directly only in the morning and was the place where   I read two book during the week.  The near building is the boathouse which also slept 4 people.

No wifi. . .

No TV. . . . . .

No Fox News. . . . .

Happy grandchildren . . . . . . . .

No kids or adults plugged into  machine. . . . .

Really a wonderful time. . . . .

The Holllies . . . . . “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress”

The Hollies are an English Rock & Roll band from Manchester in the north of England that became part of the  invasion bands to the US.   One of their  early members was Graham Nash.  They had a genuine 24 top 30 Play List and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Kindness of Strangers

“Streetcar Named Desire” is  one of Tennessee Williams’ most famous plays, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. It was an instant hit  when it appeared on stage  in 1947.   Marlin Brando and Vivian Leigh lit up the screen with their beauty and  stellar acting in the 1951 film.  The tragic  Blanche DeBois played by  Leigh had a very famous line:

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers!”

My son had a puppy follow him home from Little League, over and over until we just kept her  as  our  dog.   Because she depended on our kindness to give her a home,  her name became, Blanche.

The last few weeks, I have had quite a few strangers come into my life showing unbelievable kindness to me.  I had discovered or been pointed to a discrepancy on my brother’s headstone to the airborne unit he was a member of when he jumped, was wounded, and died on the ship to from France to England.  His stone says 17 Airborne Division and our family has always said 82 Airborne.

Wonderful, kind strangers have come into my life taking up my cause to research and definitively  set the historical record  straight.  All this happened 74 years ago which is more than a lifetime.  My nephew is going to photograph a document that hopefully will shed light on his unit.  IT is a  letter from General Gavin awarding George a Bronze Star for bravery  in December 1944, 6 months after his death. It should have his unit listed.

Cooper, is the person who noticed the 17 instead of 82 on the stone which you can see if you zoom in on the cross on the website: http://www.aparatroopersfaith.org.  She also told me that the soldiers were buried in temporary graves until the cemeteries were ready for the reburials. Cooper introduced me to Eric who for 5 long years worked to correct the  information on his great uncle’s stone in the cemetery .  The death date was incorrect.  This might seem very insignificant for  many but for families, even members who didn’t know the deceased, it is important and for  perpetuity.  Eric volunteered to  use his experience and knowledge to help me on this journey.

And there is Sandra  who has a group on Facebook, 507th in Memorial.  There are records that identify the planes with the list of men who jumped in a platoon, their gear and location.  Other records of the medical conditions.  The challenge is finding them.  Tracey a docent in Cambridge Cemetery is helping as well and has been and continues to be so kind.

Then my son, who is not a stranger but who has been kind, encouraging, and interested in his great Uncle George created the website which has been the reason I have met many of these kind, caring people.

Eric sent me  this picture this morning. . . . . Thanks to all the strangers I will most likely never meet who care about history, our fallen heroes,  my brother George,  and me.

God’s light shines through all of you  !

Healing Words

The horror, grief , emotion, healing words, and love  by the former president to a divided nation.  We need empathy and understanding  to come together.
