A teacher who swims through a river everyday to get to his students

Such a lovely, uplifting story. . . . . . .

At 9 am on a weekday, Abdul Mallik is busy wading through neck-high water, a tyre-tube around his waist, his tiffin box and shoes held in one hand above the muddy river.

It’s hardly the average morning commute, but for this 40-year-old teacher, it’s all in a day’s work.

This is what it takes Mr Mallik to get to the primary school where he has been employed for 20 years in a village in the Malappuram district of Kerala.

“If I go by bus, it takes me three hours to cover the 12-kilometer distance, but swimming through the river is easier, faster and I reach school on time,” he says, after he emerges from the river 15 minutes later.

He changes into a dry set of clothes on the river bank, and then treks uphill for 10 minutes before he reaches school.

Deli Or Dehli?

Of course it is Delhi…we are discussing India!  Our group, all architects except me,1339989559_401647053_1-Pictures-of--2-Br-Society-Flaton-rent-Rs15000-in-Sushant-Lok-3-Gurgaon  anticipated visiting the capital city and after several days of touring , we  were near. The first indication was these GIANT apartment buildings as we approached the suburbs.  There was not just one , they went on and on  alone the horizon. Everyone sat quietly looking out the windows of the bus trying to take it all in. J811909404.high-rise-apartments.60042l

They are villages, no cities ..new cities of expats, government works and affluent           Indian families.

Why so many pictures? To try to give you the feelings we had as we arrived.

Skyscrapers_connaught_place_New_Delhi

The skyline continued into the center of the city. It is not New York…but it isn’t to be ignored.  In our stay, I will take you to the two sites that I enjoyed in Delhi.

A-man-walks-towards-India-Gate

The first is the monumental arch, India Gate. It is a war memorial built in 1931 to commentate the 90,000 Indian Soldiers killed in WWI. I guess that  I was ignorant of this because of the emphasis of  western civilization history I learned in school! The Brits were afraid if India joined the war ,it would be against them. But  in India, the prevailing thought was to help Britain  and ultimately speed their desire for  independence, which didn’t come for 30 more years.  There is another gate in Mumbai, and much of the world has such gates of commemoration architecture such as Rome, Paris and Berlin.

Safdarjung_Tomb,_Delhi

Does this look familiar?   It is often called “Little Taj Mahal.”  Do you see why?  It is the first of many garden ( Garden of Eden influenced?)  tombs constructed in India.  The  great mogul leader Humayun was buried here in the year of 1570. This was my favorite  place in Delhi with the peace and quiet of the garden setting. Our guide, who was provided by the hotel, told us  about the birds….the green parrots and the Black Kites.AdmiringtheFlyingExployts

kite

He was a certified bird guide of India, thus very knowledgeable. There are people who come to India for 3 weeks and have a bird safari!

Back to the tomb. . . . The Taj Mahal, which of course is world famous, was built about 50 years later and  designed by  a Persian architect. I think he had seen this tomb, don’t you ?  The Taj  was 20 years in the building from 1628 and finished in 1648. The Taj, in its perfection,  is the culmination of tomb/garden architecture in India.

Old Delhi and new Delhi

Well back out into the  city for a ride on the subway. . .  .

05VBG_RAJIVCHOWK_302661f

Taking public transportation in a group of 13 is in itself a challenge.  David put his  IPhone in his back pocket and got his wallet from his front pocket. He remembers being pushed and jostled ( routine in India)  by some young Indians, and immediately knew that the IPhone was done. It was and he was furious! Approaching some policemen, telling his tale,  they just shrugged and walked away. We ran back to the hotel and within a half an hour , had things worked out. He was angry and embarrassed….the world traveler.  These things just happen and this was the only time anyone was robbed in our group so it is pretty good odds. That was a damper on the rest of our time in Delhi.  I would say, “But no one was hurt!”

“Oh stop being such a Pollyanna!”

Delhi is a monumental city with many more  historical sites to see, but if we are fortunate to do this trip again, we will not go back. Unless you are  interested in the rapid suburban growth in the last decade or riding on a very crowded subway, I would recommend that you bypass Delhi, the second most populated city in India with 16+ million souls. . . and visit say…Pondecherry instead!

I leave you waving bye-bye  to the Delhi traffic.

110597874_india_321411c

Oh, we did see a restaurant called “Delhi Belly” near our hotel.  No we didn’t eat there as we already knew about “Delhi Belly.”  But we did appreciate their self deprecating  humor!

Child Labor

Monday, writing about Labor Day, reminded me of a morning in Cairo, years ago.  We stayed in a great hostel called Garden City House.  It was full of professors and archaeologists, students, and academic people who travel to wonderful places , but on a budget.  We heard about it in Rome at Albergo Sole from a professor.   Garden City is a lovely section where you can see the Nile as well as the bustling city from the balcony.                   garden-city-house-garden-city-house-cairo-egypt-hostel

That morning, we were surveying the wonders of Cairo from the balcony, when I looked to the left and saw a rather high building , unfinished with workers on the top level. Suddenly, I noticed a boy about 8 , I would guess, peering down over the side and waving at us!  Horrified that he was so near the edge, I said, “Oh I wish I could do something to get the child off the building!” But not wanting him to  be distracted and fall, I just waved back!”  We decided that the child had had to go to work that day with dad.  I don’t know which would have been safer running unsupervised in the crowded streets or peering down from a multistory building and waving at the Americans! It is hard to describe the feeling of seeing things people do making hard decisions just to survive in developing countries.

Now to India, where of course we spent a much longer time. We saw children begging, on work sites with moms and dads, children being walked to school by nannies or driven by family driver. Indian children working parents at a construction site near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi

These little guys , at least, have on pants. Lots of Indian children, especially the tiny one run around buck naked. I have no idea about diapers. . . .  .india_village001_16x9

At one stop on our travels , I saw a young woman picking up bricks and carrying her baby.  Next I noticed her squatting, in the Indian squat, to nurse the baby right in the center of the field.

2152092808_2b129fd1b0_o

This squatting position is taken by men and women alike. You see them  lined up like this along the road.  It is hard for Americans to  sit in this position unless you are a catcher in a baseball game or do yoga.  I think it is  learned because of the bathroom situation and/ or lack of chairs. Indians adapt.

AccidentWallOne2307e

Young families are  waiting along side a construction site to begin work.                         There are older children everywhere selling postcards or trinkets, especially at huge tourist sites like Amber Fort outside of the “pink city ” or  Jaipur  with its  elephant rides, charmed cobras,  and “The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel.” This is one of the sites tourists swoop in and out of  on their week visit to India.  David’s students were instructed to sketch wherever we visited . They would draw ( pun intended) large crowds of interested observers.  They would show the people  their work and often ask the Indian kids to sign their sketch books. On that day, the students were dumbfounded that there was a 12 year old Muslim boy who was not able to write his name! His life will be pestering tourists  to go  home with a few pennies…rupees each night, for the rest of his life.

I am always very protective of India and though it is easy to post shocking facts and pictures, I want to tell you that progress is being made. Since 2009, there is a law in India for  Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education. They join 134 countries in the world with that law.  A free hot lunch is provided for all children in the government schools. There was a terribly, tragic  story of children dying at a rural school after having lunch  laced with poison.  But there are many, many children receiving a free education and hot meal each day. I loved seeing the kids in their uniforms  ( a holdover from the British) off to school in the mornings. Though this is available for all Indian families, some are so poor that they choose to have their children selling to make some daily money.  The same is true in Egypt which has the largest free, at all levels,  education system in the Middle East.

3166-Boy-selling-postcards-at-the-pyramids-of-Giza,-Egypt.-6939

The children in both countries know the word baksheesh or money!

Writing this, I wondered about literacy rates in both countries, so I went to Wikipedia.  Egypt has an over all literacy rate of 72%, men at 80% and women at 63% with 10 year olds and above able to read and write.  In India, the total literacy rate is 82%, men 82% and women 65% meaning 7 year olds and above there can read and write.  These statistics are encouraging for both countries.

2b54db00-b53b-46b3-93ea-36aad5bcf971HiRes (1)

This pictures was the most touching to me. My hope is that this little girl will grow up to meaningful work at a fair wage, safety to walk the streets and ride the buses,  clean water and safe, clean facilities, safe, nutritious food,  be able to  dream dreams and have the skills  to attain them, and  after  a strong meaningful education take her rightful place to make a meaningful contribution to her family and  Indian society.

There are lots of people with this same vision for their   country …the work moves  slowly….there are so many souls in India and in Egypt!

Namaste. . . . .This is Egypt and India. . . .  .. .

Today I am responding  to comments on  my post Mr. Modi.  I have come to realize that there is no lukewarm reaction to India….either you LOVE it  or you HATE it.  There seems not a meeting place in the middle. So too, it seems, that there are only strong feeling pro or con for Mr. Modi. This is not my first mention of Namo in my blog. Please see- https://talesalongtheway.com/2013/07/10/three-flawed-politicians/Today, I am commenting on my blog post Mr. Modi. Please feel free to read all the correspondence I have had on the comment section. I just tried to put all the links in my post to make it easier.  I didn’t delete any comments. I do believe in free expression.  No vulgarity, please.  I have learned that just as there is no lukewarm response to India…..you love or hate it, there is no middle ground at least on the people who responded, to  Mr. Modi.  The top of this post shows the unbelievable amount of people who visited and viewed my blog in less than 24 hours. 277 people have visited and there were 442 views along with the countries represented.  My  best ever  views before today which is not over yet,  was 210 when I got a boost from aopinuatedman.com . Mr. Modi is bigger than OM who has 23,000+ followers!  It is quite exciting  to  stir this amount of conversation and visits. Don’t worry, I will be back to my old boring self, tomorrow!

READ: MILITARY REVOLT AGAINST OBAMA’S ATTACK ON SYRIA

I have never heard of anything like this happening.

Both top brass and regular servicemembers express opposition to US involvement

The military revolt against the Obama administration’s plan to launch a potentially disastrous attack on Syria is gathering pace, with both top brass and regular servicemembers expressing their vehement opposition to the United States becoming entangled in the conflict.

The backlash began to spread on social media yesterday with numerous members of the military posting photos of themselves holding up signs stating that they would refuse to fight on the same side as Al-Qaeda in Syria. The photos went viral, with one post alone generating over 16,000 shares on Facebook.

Others have posted their photos on Twitter alongside the hashtag #IdidntJoin.

As the Obama administration prepares to present a draft resolution to lawmakers that is by no means “limited” in its scope and would in fact grease the skids for an open…

Labor Day

NM_Minimum_wage_battle_continues_at_Roun_754140001_20130325180305_640_480

The first Monday of September has been celebrated as Labor Day since 1882 when it was  first observed in New York City. It was started by the labor movement  to dedicate the economic and  social development of the American worker.  It is a yearly national tribute to workers for their contributions to strength, prosperity and well-being of the country.  (From US Dept. Of Labor website)  For many families the celebration and long weekend is for family gatherings, end of summer and vacations cook-outs and  thoughts of cooler weather soon approaching. It is a great day for a last visit to the shore or good old capitalist shopping for school supplies. Many people have to work on Labor Day. There are 14 national holidays but workers have vacation of say 2 weeks a year and they can choose which days they have off.  Grover Cleveland the 24th president sign Labor Day into law as a Federal holiday, in 1896.  He was defeated but Labor Day remained.  Today the number of labor union workers has decreased in the United States.

This Labor Day has the added drama of many of the fast food workers demonstrating across the country for a doubling of the minimum was from $7.25 to $15. This is  why I  chose the first photo.  These people are working but they feel the $7.25 is not a living wage.  And it probably isn’t.  On the other side, management says that fast food jobs are not for providing all the expenses of a family , but as jobs for teenager after school or entry level jobs.  They also note that there are other opportunities within the company to move up , have more responsibilities and higher wages.  From what I have read, many of the restaurants are already paying wages above minimum, but not as high as the $15.  Owners are saying that they will have to pass the higher cost of labor on and the cost of the food will go up for the consumer.  Many of the workers themselves buy the now inexpensive food , and they will be hurting themselves. Another complicated situation for people  who are more knowledgeable than I. I will leave you with a chart of minimum wages from around the world.  Interesting that there are seven higher than the United States. ap_fast_food_wage_protest_ll_130829_16x9_992

Two Italian Davids

Italy_Map (1)

Sunday seems like a good day for a Biblical, art history lesson. David, the shepherd boy, later crowned king,  was armed only with a slingshot when he met, and slayed the horrible huge Philistine giant, Goliath. It has been the subject of many paintings and sculptures through the years. I would like to show you the two most famous Davids and introduce  you to the artists who created them. Michelangelo di Lodovico is known simply as Michelangelo and the other is Gian Lorenzo Bernini who is also know by his last name. Both artists are celebrated “rock stars” in their places in art history.

Michelangelo, David (front view) 1504.jpg

Michelangelo, a Florentine artist , prominent painter, and sculptor  of the high Renaissance in the 16th century, created this David. He chose to depict the instant when David first turns his head to see Goliath in all his miserable splendor. Michelangelo’s Renaissance style  of idealism emphasizes his great admiration and awe to detail of the human body.  The original David is on display at the Galleria dell’Academia in Florence , and a copy stands in the Piazza della Signoria in the original site for the statue.   The original has been moved inside to protect it from the weather.

florence_11

Michelangelo  actually did dissection  work on cadres to learn exactly  how the body worked.

michelangelo-sculptures-12

Bernini, the first of the Italian Baroque style  of the arts, created his work in Rome.He chose the dramatic instant after David had chosen a stone from his shepherd’s pouch,  and was warming up for his strike with a powerful spiraling move.

bernini_david

Bernini is credited with more closely following  the Biblical story with his use of the pouch. His elaborate detail and movement are excellent examples of the  realism emphasized by the Baroque of the 17th century.

bernini_david3

Bernini’s David is on display at the Villa Borghese in Rome where it was designed to stand and has for the last 400 years.

Interesting fact is that both artists created these masterpieces at the beginning of their careers,  being prodigies at only 25 years of age.

R002-011

The flawless, white marble for each of these statutes came from the mountains north of Rome in Carrrara of  North Tuscany. We have driven up through these mountains right to the mines where the marble is being excavated. Italians have no OSHA!

Lastly, another similarity is that these 2 pieces of memorable sculpture were created in Italy by Italian artists.  To me, that is not a coincidence but an expectation.  I have traveled extensively, and in my mind, without a doubt, the Italians arts have  more appeal with creativity, originality, and  beauty than I have seen anywhere else!  I encourage a discussion with others who might disagree!

A classroom experiment on Racism(must watch)-Watch A Teacher Make Her 3rd-Grade Kids Hate Each Other

This social experiment has been around for quite some time. I taught third grade but never wanted to put the kids through this, though as you can see is very dramatic and painful. I had them imagine this but not act it out. We can all learn from this, though!

Mr. Modi

NM1

Opinionated Man(aopinionatedman.com) is asking for posts from people who value the importance of voicing his/her opinion. So here sits this white, American woman talking about Mr. Modi, the current Chief Minister in Gujarat, India! Why you might ask?  We stayed in Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat, for four months.  India is just on the precipice, poised to either soar to the heavens or continue in timidity while  remaining under  the control of a royal family!  What, the British handed over the country in 1947, you might say?  But when they left, the Nehru/Gandhi family was there to step in. More about them later.

First, I want to introduce Mr. Modi to you.  From the picture you can see his vision and though words are cheap, he has lived by them.  He was born in Gujarat into a lower, middle class family. His first entrance into business was with his brother as  teenagers running a tea stall near the train terminal. He worked his way up through the ranks in  the pre-BJP. to the BJP of today. In 2001,  he was ready to step into the failing shoes of Mr. Patel, and replace  the inept  administrator ,who was accused of  corruption and  abuse of power .  Mr. Modi believed in privatization, capitalism,  small government, and this  began his rise to “rock star” status.

In. 2002, there were wide-spread anit-Muslim riots in Gujarat. Radical Muslims  had burned a train of Hindu pilgrims and this began the riots.  Mr. Modi has been accused of turning a blind eye to the Muslim persecution, but a court has  ruled that he was not complicit in these horrendous crimes. The accusations have continued and the US has denied him a visa for a visit several times because of demonstrations here. In America, I thought someone is considered innocent until proven guilty?   I wonder what will happen if he is appointed Prime Minister?   Since  2002, there have been no more anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat.

In the mean time, Glittering Gujarat has begun to shine in India and the world under his leadership. He has been elected three times by his constituents and there is evidence as to why.  Gujarat is the fastest growing state in India, the economy is the fastest growing in India, best IT area ( Mr. Modi is quite proud that all his police are computer literate), and in a country where place after place that we visited had blackouts of electricity, Gujurat is selling excess back to the company. I remember only once in all the time that we were there , a black out of only a few minutes. The agriculture profits have grown to 9.6% , the  highest in this mostly agrarian country and he has a triving International Kite Festival and hosted an international conference on economics this year.  One statistic  that I was amazed at was that when Mr. Modi became CM, there were 11 colleges in and around Ahmedabad and now there are 42!  It is being called the Boston of India.  All those young people are poised to take on the world!  Mr. Modi says that India has the largest population of educated youth in the world. ( China has the one child family planning policy.) The young people are energized and love Mr. Modi. He is their hope for positive change.  Tourism is up 30% in two years thanks in part to the “Breathe in a Bit of Gujarat) beautiful professionally made commercials These promote tourist destinations and are narrated  the beloved Bollywood star, Amatabh Bachchan who is set to film his third round of promotions.

Now to the Congress Party , the party in power nationally.  I was shocked watching them on TV and reminded of the royal family in Britain with their distance from the people and seemingly bored indifference.  Dr. Singh, who is the Prime Minister, never speaks, doesn’t hold news conferences or connect with the people. It is said that he is the ” place holder” until Rahul, who is the current VP, is ready to be Prime Minister. He will be the fifth generation of this family to be in power, if his party is reelected. The Guardian paper had a very clear quote about the Gandhi family(2007) :

“The Nehru/Gandhi family brand has no peer in the world-a member of the Gandhi family has been in charge of India for 40 of the 60 years since independence.  The allure of India’s first family blend the right to rule of the British monarchy with the tragic glamour of the American Kennedy clan.”

Mr. Rahul Gandhi appears distant and disinterested on TV.  He has made no major contributions to the country and is merely waiting his  coronation, unless the people of India have had enough of this family and their lack- luster contributions to the  country. India continues the Parliamentarian form of elections so there is no direct election of Prime Minister, as is the case in Britain.

Let me finish with two Narendra Modi stories. When asked if he was going to provide each student with a laptop upon graduation he replied, ” I am providing a good education so that they can get a good job and buy their own laptop!”

During the horror and tragedy in Uttarakhand  this year, the government and many of the  the states sent food and supplies in large buses , not thinking that roads were  no longer accessible or even there.  Mr. Modi sent helicopters filled with supplies and saved many stranded , hungry souls.

Naremdra Modi is a smart, seasoned politician. He has vision and the will to carry it out with hard work and determination. He has  a proven record in Gujarat as charismatic, a vibrant eloquent speaker,  and a leader to give hope and tools to the youth of India. He  may be a Rambo, sometimes in style, but his state loves him and what he has done to bring prosperity to all Gujarati citizens.  He is ready now to take his “Modi Model” to the whole country and be the leader for all of India.  India is ready to become a leader in the world but they need a strong  leader to guide them.  Namo Modi is the man!

( My husband laughs at me and says I should be Mr. Modi’s American campaign manager….hmmm.. . . . .. . .  “Namo, I am waiting by the phone!”)
