Oh, it is still summer, isn’t it?  My friend Shehanne Moore honored me with this award several weeks back and I am just “getting it done” now!  The really cool thing is that Shehanne started this award and then it came around full circle to her when two of her friends nominated  her.  Now she is sending it out again. Shehanne is a published author of “smexy” romance novels set in her native Scotland.  Two of her works are Unraveling of Lady Flurry and Judas Bride,  both available on Amazon for your Kindle. Shehanne  writes and lives in Scotland with her husband and children. She has a great sense of humor and is a very encouraging blogger.  Visit her at:

New Yorkers Have Spoken

new-york-weiner-spitzer-cover-2013

Some of you may remember the post I made in the summer on three flawed politicians, Mr. Spitzer , Mr. Weiner, and Mr. Modi. This is my update.

https://talesalongtheway.com/2013/07/10/three-flawed-politicians/

The picture at the top of the page is a compilation of the two most infamous candidates in this Tuesday’s  New York City Democratic Primary , Anthony Weiner, and Eliot Spitzer.  There has been much discussion  about whether the people in city, which is ultra liberal on most issues, would find it in their hearts to forgive and forget the sex scandals that these two men put the electorate through.  Mr. Weiner was running for Mayor of New York , which is a very powerful and influential position.  He had been a congressman from New York when he was forced to resigned because of a sexing scandal.  Mr. Spitzer, who had been called the Sheriff of Wall Street for his tenacious battles in prosecuting financial houses and outing prostitution  rings, was found to be  involve, himself, with  call girls.  On announcing their runs for mayor and comptroller, both men spoke of this being their redemption for past wrongs.weiner13n-7-web Huma Weiner was by her husband’s side, professing her love for him when he announced his candidacy. She was there again a month later when it was revealed that he  had been involved  on line with another woman after he said  this behavior had stopped.  Silda Spitzer , who had stood by her husband when he first announced his resignation as governor, was conspicuously absent during his campaign for comptroller.

Tuesday, the votes were cast and counted. Both men lost. Mr. Spitzer lost by a small margin of 3.5%. The sad thing is that he is a very intelligent man who could have done a good job for New Yorkers. Anthony Weiner received only 5% of the  total votes for mayor. At the end, his campaign went up in flames as he drove away making an obscene gesture to the media in response to their  relentless questioning of him throughout the race.

130709-spitzer-weiner-ap

Why?  Was it the lack of their wives’ support ?  I am pretty sure that there were women who voted against them because of the embarrassment and pain they put their  families through.  Maybe the voters didn’t want to be reminded and embarrassed by these men in very public offices, if they won.   But I am thinking it is that even today in this morally, liberal society that there are some boundaries and expectations for  all of us, including politicians. In other words, character does count and the voters have been spoken.   Power to the people!

nm-14th

Well, Mr. Modi that leaves you in my list of unresolved flawed politicians. As far as I know the Indian election is still scheduled for  2014, but that can change.  I have not  been able to find even a hint of personal scandal in your tenure as politician. You seem to have been married to Gujarat.  I am still hoping that first your party and then the parliament will see your time in politics as a whole picture.  Maybe when you were first appointed CM of Gujarat and those terrible riots happened, you were paralyzed to stop them. And yes, there have been awful riots in other states such as the Sikh riots in the Punjab under the Congress party. I wonder why that is not still being discussed?  Anyway, there have not been riots since those dark days in Gujarat in 2002, and  bright days have come for the state with growth, agriculture and education.   I know that none of us on this earth are without sin, and I also know of the gift of forgiveness and redemption. I hope, if it is the will of your people,  you will be given a chance to continue your Gujarat Miracle Model in all of India!  Let the people  be heard!

Aftermath of 9/11/01

994315_209213692577266_1557944150_n

In October, 2001, I had two visits to New York. The first was a school  trip I had organized for families to the Bronx Zoo.  zoo_591

It was a Saturday and the bus was ordered,  all the money was collected, and no one was cancelling, so we went. It is a wonderful zoo set in acres and acres of an English landscape garden site.  I had gone there many times with my children and school children. It is not the San Diego Zoo, which has the reputation of the best zoo in the world, and I will not argue with that.  The Bronx Zoo can be  described in many ways, but that day, about a month after the attack on 9/11, it was somber.  Yes, there were children and families there viewing the habitats, picnicking , but even the children were subdued and quiet.  And it was not crowded as on all the other times I had visited.  I did call my husband to check the news as I thought if there was something  terrible that happened, we would not know.  Your mind begins to think of terrible things because of the terrible things that had happened.  All was quiet on the news.

Several weeks later, David and I went to New York because we had bought Off-Broadway season tickets earlier in the summer and it was time for the first play. This was our first trip into the city after 9/11.  The Bronx Zoo is in New York but in the burrow of the Bronx.  As we were walking around Manhattan, something seemed very different….and it was the quiet…everywhere.  In the city that never sleeps there had always been noise, of people talking, walking , arguing, horns beeping, and cabs screeching down the streets.  Now, there were people on the streets, all quietly walking or talking in a soft voice.  There were no horns honking. It was the quiet of death or shock or a little of both. We walked on quietly , too. The city was in shock as were the people walking the streets.

We soon drew near a crowd standing  in two lines from a fire station  to the street. Soon we saw a firetruck beginning to back into the station.  There are lots of small  neighborhood stations throughout the city. They are narrow in width  often only the width  + extra for one or two trucks. to park.  After they return from a call,  they back into the the parking place, facing out to  the street , ready to go on a moment’s notice.  First, we noticed the black mourning wreath on the front of the engine. 628x471 (1)

Next we  saw the shrine of remembrance of fallen heroes.

Just as the truck began backing into the firehouse, one person, then two until all the people beside the moving truck began clapping in a somber cadence. Thanking the brave, selfless firemen, remembering  the fallen , thanking the living.  After the truck was back in the station, David and I walked on, neither speaking. I couldn’t because I was silently crying.  My family always teases me about my tender heart being touched to tears by  just about anything.  I figured David would say” Don’t be a crybaby”, but instead I heard a big snuff from him as we moved down the street. Seeing the sophisticated, often hard New Yorkers showing authentic appreciation and not bothering that they  could be seen ..was indeed touching. As we walked on towards the theater, we noticed something else unusual. article-oil-1112 There were flags waving from most every building we passed.  Again the urbane New Yorkers  were not known for their patriotism.  We had never seen that before.  Indeed another show of appreciation of what America is built on …..Freedom, democracy, the constitution…government by and for the people.

Even at the New York Stock Exchange, Old Glory flies. stockexchange20w-1-web

Thinking of something to take away from this time in history, my thoughts are that I don’t know why or how all this happened and what could have done differently. But what I will take away is that  life is very fragile and fleeting, and precious, and it can be taken away or changed forever in an instant. We never know when we get up each morning.  We only have, however fleeting, the choice of how we use this  life.

My Story. . . . .9/11/01

11Photo1It was a  Tuesday and a crystal clear fall morning, September 11, 2001.  My sixth graders were in art first period, and I was doing planning for the week. The principal  popped in and  said, “Turn on your TV!”  Seeing  the now famous images hit me like a ton of bricks, as well as disbelief. My head was swimming, filled with questions, and I was dizzy with it all.  Hurrying down to collect my class, another thought hit even closer to home.  My son and daughter-in-law live in New York.  Are they safe…out of harms way?  Neither of them worked in the WTC, but the  nature of the city and the world’s business is that people are out and about having meetings all over.   I ran to get my phone and got a busy signal!  A few minutes later, I tried again…busy …still.  This happened over and over.  These phones we had for emergencies didn’t  work when I was experiencing the biggest emergency in my life.  This was the situation with the phones for hours  because the cell tower was on the top of one of the twin towers.  There was no personal communication  available.

september-9-11-attacks-anniversary-ground-zero-world-trade-center-pentagon-flight-93-second-airplane-wtc_39997_600x450

Parents began to come to get their kids ,as at that point, we had no details. Would there be more attacks?  Was this beginning of a huge war?  The school was called together in the church for scriptures, prayers and music.  It was comforting.  Someone told me that the reason that the phone was busy, busy. . . the cell tower was hit and down. We went through the motions and sometimes just sat quietly and still ,watching  both towers fall.I hadn’t heard a word from my son….I prayed silently.  Stories were circulated in the school of parents who were in the City for meetings that fateful day. Where were they? Were they safe?  More people to pray for.  No answers, just those dreadful pictures. . . . .

Then at 12:30 the secretary came to my room.  Chris had called….if he called , he was alive! Thank God. Both he and his wife were safe and unharmed. He had been in West Chester that morning and his wife worked in mid-town near Grand Central Station.  He was not able to call because of the trouble with the cell phones.

111WTCPeopleBW

Later, I would hear stories, mostly from my daughter-in-law.  People in her office had noticed the second plane flying low  past their window. It was a surprise and a wonder as flights over mid-town are not allowed. Soon they found out about its dastardly mission.  She said it was announced fairly quickly that the island  of Manhattan was going on lock down. No one could leave or enter over the bridges, through the tunnels, or in the trains until it was deemed safe to travel.  Friends in the office, who lived in Manhattan, invited  others  to come to their place. Someone  noticed the senior  partner had gone into his office and locked the door.  He would not answer the questions of “What shall we do, stay or go?” When the workers left, he was still in his office, paralyzed by the situation.

september-9-11-attacks-anniversary-ground-zero-world-trade-center-pentagon-flight-93-collapsing-tower_40003_600x450

Later she told me that the streets were filled with sirens, shrieking  and wailing continuously.  After a few hours, it was deemed safe to open the transportation and Demone was waiting for a train to Sleepy Hollow from Grand Central.  There was a large commotion and people started running and screaming.  Someone had yelled,  “Bomb!’ and the nervous crowd had gone crazy. It turned out that this was a hoax….can you believe anyone could be so cruel?

A cab driver, I spoke to  a few weeks later, told me he was driving that day.  He remembers the sirens, and horns honking, honking continuously.  People were using their cars as weapons slamming into others to squeeze through the nearly stopped traffic.  Cars were scrapping into the  guardrails  trying to escape. There were stories of people walking for miles, some just wandering aimlessly.

When the kids met up at home, they decided to go to the hospital and give blood. At that time, people thought it would be needed and wanted to do something.  They stood in a huge, non-moving line for 8 hours, to learn that little emergency blood was needed because of the  lack of survivors.s01_H6880853

At one point, I was struck with the question  if there had been school children on the roof. But thankfully, I remembered that it didn’t  open until 10:00 as I explained yesterday. On my way home, I went to CVS and saw the mother of a student who had gone on one of my trips to New York. We both cried with the remembrances of that wonderful trip, that she said her daughter still talked about, and the sudden, swift, horror of this day!

President Bush had suggested that at 7 pm, people stand on their porches with a lit candle to signify “the light the US wished to shine in a dark world.” We did it, which  surprised me that my husband agreed.  He is not very emotional or sentimental, but he stood next to me with tears running down his face, holding his candle high.

Later I was lying in bed unable to sleep with all sorts of images, and words, and questions filling my brain and refusing to be turned off.  This day 90 different countries  had lost citizens just trying to do their work.  And my last grateful  thought was of Chris calling to tell me that he and Demone were safe and well. He knew, of course, that I would be worried out of my mind.  I suddenly thought of all those Mamas all over the world from 90 countries, with  almost 3000 children who  were unable to call to say, “Mom, I am alive and safe!” For ages, I remembered that daily, and would pray for comfort for those dear women. Today, I pray for them ,who have not forgotten and never will, this day when their heart was broken into pieces,  9/11/01!

9/10. . . .Then and Now

images (28)

I have decided to write my memories of this horrible time in our history. This way, they will forever be in my family history for the  children of my  grandchildren to read and remember.  As of this moment, I am thinking it will take three posts. I know that people don’t read great long posts so I am going to chunk it. I would love if any of you have memories of where you were, or if you lost a friend or acquaintances and are willing to share.

Twelve years ago today was just an ordinary day in New York.   No one gave any thought of tomorrow being a special day except the terrorists who hated us more than they loved life itself.  The World Trade Center or Twin Towers were each 110 stories high. They were the tallest buildings in the world for two years when it opened in 1973.  On a typical day, 50,000 souls worked on this site and 140,000 visitors came a day.  The complex was 7 buildings with the north and south twin towers being the world wide recognizable image.  The WTC was so large by Western standards that it had its own zip code of 10048.

I had taught fourth grade which is when children learn about their state. I took children to visit New York,  one of the greatest cities in world.   We went to the top of the WTC , literally the top of the south tower,  but stood in the middle of the roof.  We were told that on a clear day, visibility was 50 miles in all four directions.  9/11/01 was one of those days, but no one knew to watch. . .  .

This is the lobby were we entered for security and purchasing the tickets. Funny that I always remembered the impression of white marble all around as you can see. I am sure the architect had no idea that the white marble would be the tomb  stones for so many .

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The following day, when I got my wits about me, I wondered if there had been school children on the roof. I then remembered the Observation Roof doesn’t open until 10 AM. There is a photo on the net that is a hoax of the last person photographed on the roof.  The attacks were just before and just after 9 AM.  Actually, the first plane hit at 8:46:40 into the South Tower . It burned  for 56 minutes before it collapsed. The observation deck was not opened yet for the day.

Today, a new building is being erected on this site, called One World Trade Center. It was not begun until 2006 because the families thought of this as  a “holy” burial ground.  A compromise was reached to have a place of memorial with fountains and living trees for reflection and remembrance as well as a new building.

article-2137005-12D97DFA000005DC-94_964x607

There was a ceremony when the new tower reached the height of the tallest building in NYC.

New Yorks Tallest

The Memorial Plaza has twin reflective pools with cascading waterfalls surrounded by living oak trees.  The tops of the pools have the names  laser engraved not in alphabetical order but  by groups such as workers in a certain office, policemen , fireman. People can touch each name, or do a rubbing.  People can stick their hands into  the water under the name plaque, as well.  The plaza has been one of the most visited sites in the city since it opened. Admission is free, but reservations are needed to control the crowds.

Who could imagine that in 24 hours, it would all be gone and in its place just memories of loved ones?

And that all these people would be on the “Missing. . . .  Have You Seen Board” put up by desperate family members. . .

On 9/10/01, all these people were working at the Twin Towers. Little did they know that some would throw themselves from the burning buildings tomorrow, choosing to fall rather than be burned to death. Others would burn and a very few others would escape.

Here is the peaceful skyline of New York from Jersey on 0/10/01. Tomorrow it will change forever.

Fab India logo-500x500

India and shopping….this is for me! I actually found out about these lovely stores near the end of our time in India. We were spending the weekend with some friends in Baroda. I noticed the lovely bed covers and asked where they bought them.  The hostess told me about fabindia and laughingly commented that “Only an American could come to India, buy up Indian products, raise the price, and sell them back, so successfully to the Indian people!”

Clothing is available that is  multi-generational and ranges from  contemporary to traditional.

The company started exporting Indian ethnic hand-made products under the name fabindia in 1960. The first stores in India opened in 1976 selling clothing, furnishings, fabrics, and ethic handmade produces.  Today there are 170 in country with 40,000 artisans and craftspeople now producing for the company. Some are still working in  village homes, though  quality control is difficult under these circumstances. Blockprinting

Some larger factory buildings have been built where the products are  made by Indian women using sewing machines. This provides modern mass production to satisfy the demand of the public.stitching.14300410_std

There  is a school in Rajasthan where many of the crafts originated called Fabindia School and was started in 1992. This is part of the company’s philanthropy to give back to India.  It is coeducational with 600 students, and 40% of the students are girls.  The company subsidizes the tuition to encourage more girls and is completely committed for education for the them.

We decided to bring home some bed covers for our children and also for ourselves. There was no problem getting king size, but there is no shipping to the States.  The cost for 4 king size spreads was less than $300 total. We figured  this is about 50% less for this quality at home.   There is a website but as yet the mechanize is not available here.

It is a great idea in India with cloth reusabe bags not just in the food stores but as you shop in other stores.  Some are made of very elegant, sheer  material.  Of course they are  eco- friendly as well as provide jobs for many Indian women!  There are even various sizes available and I brought some home with me.

One exciting thing, is that now there are stores in more countries as you can see, but still not in the US. Louis Vuitton  is now a part owner, so that gives you an idea about the quality of the merchandise.  He has opened a store in the great shopping city of Roma!

So if you see a fabindia store anywhere you shop, go on in and be surrounded by the colors and sights of  fabulous  India! You won’t be disappointed.

Asiatic Lions

DSC03400-5

Very soon after we arrived in India, talk began about a safari. We decided on Gir because of its proximity to Ahemedabad.  The preserve is about the size of Houston, Texas.  In its past, it was a royal  hunting reserve, but now is a National Park where only hunting with a camera is allowed.  Another unique aspect is that this lion subspecies, also called Indian Lions,  is the single isolated population of Asian Lions living together on the earth. Right in our neighborhood!

The group was small and we only needed a car instead of the bus.  The cost for transportation, lodging, dinner  and breakfast, as well as entry in a jeep to the park was $100!AD2012071025903-In_this_March_2  Unfortunately at the last minute, I couldn’t go because of the dreaded “Delhi Belly.”  I was disappointed but didn’t want to risk being in the car for several hours going and coming!

tents

A few years ago, there were only 180 of these beauties and they were on the endangered  species list. The project has been quite successful with a total now of 441 lions, including  97 males, 160 females with the rest being cubs or adolescents. Lions live in groups called “prides.”  There are usually 3 males, one dozen females plus their young.  The females are all related as they stay with their pride when they mature.  The young males leave “home” when they mature to establish a new pride or join another.  asiatic_lion_persica_indian_wallpaper_2-1280x960

The Asian male is recognizable from the African Lion in that his mane, or hair around his neck, is smaller than the African Lion.  They mark the territory of the pride and roar menacingly at danger or chase off the offenders.  The females are the hunters and they work  together to attack their prey of large mammals.  After the kill, though, the group effort degenerates into squabbling over and sharing the kill.  The cubs are at the bottom of the “eating order!”

India is quite mindful that many of her guests love animals and experiences new to them. There are camel rides in the desert of Rajasthan , elephant rides, bird safaris and probably many more adventures available.  So keep that in mind and check it out if you are going to incredible India!

* * * *  (4 stars out of 5) was the vote of the group of the weekend in Gir!

A tale of two notes: One a blessing, the other a curse

I saw this family and their son this morning on TV but didn’t know about the second note until just now.

Dean Smith's avatarOpentheWord.org

Ashley England of China Grove, N.C. has a special-needs, 8-year old child. The family was at a restaurant in the city on Friday, August 30, 2013 when their son, Riley, began to act up.

Riley was shouting and loudly banging the table. It was obvious a number of patrons were becoming agitated by the noise. Ashley was embarrassed and frustrated as Riley had been acting our more in public lately.

Then something incredible happened.

One Million or More

Population-Seven-Billion-picture--India Crowded-Streets (1)

We have all seen pictures like this of India. Some of us know statistics like India being the second most populous country on earth with 1.2 billion souls just  behind China at 1.3 billion.  India is on track to surpass China in world population by 2050, because of the Chinese family planning program.

I would like to try and help you understand what these numbers mean because it all is very hard for me to get my head around just how many people that is. India has 2000 ethnic groups, every major religion, 4 major language groups and many languages. I remember flying into Chennai and in the airport we saw signs in two languages  in two different alphabets. In Gujarat, where we lived, people need to speak Gujarati, probably a tribal or village language, Hindi and if they are well educated, English. I asked a woman blogger from India, how many languages she spoke and she said 6 with a “touch”  of Spanish. . . .  making the total of 7!

The statistics often quoted about India having the most  youth in the world is true according to Wikipedia.  50% of the population of India is younger than 25 and 65% is  below 35 years of age!   No wonder the college and universities grew  just in Gujurat from 11 to 42 sites in the last 10 years.

I remember David telling his students that the population of India is more than all the people in North America, Central America, and South America put together.  I asked an Indian friend about where his family was from. He said, a village. I asked how many people and he said 75,000!  Seventy-five thousand in a village?  Only in India!

So today, I thought I would show you the list of  the 53 Indian cities with population of 1,000,000 or more.  Yest there are 53 according to Wikipedia. So we can have a tiny understanding of the challenges in India….food, housing, jobs, medical care, education, transportation, and remember the new, independent India is only 60 years old!

Response to Post Mr. Modi

I couldn’t figure out how to reblog these comments 8-( but I thought they are very enlightening.) All three are from one person.   The last two are in response to comments on my blog by another blogger.  If you are interested, I have posted every comment I have received from Mr. Modi (Lightening Rod)  post!  Please note this young man’s background from Kerala.  When we were there, the guide said that it is the only communist state in India and also has the highest literacy rate.  Namaste. . . .

Mr. Modi

Namaste Anne,

Its a pleasure writing to u. Many Modi haters say that the online fans of Modi are paid trolls, who are a part of his PR Machinary trying everything possible to build his image. I am Modi’s fan, I am an online freak, so u can call me an Online Fan, but definitely not a troll. Now there is a real fight going on between the MSM (main stream media) and SM (social media). The job of MSM is to portray Modi in the wrong way and malign him and the job of his fans online (SM) is to expose those lies of MSM (NDTV.com, IBNlive.in) and when we try to expose the lies, we are called “paid trolls”.

I will tell u briefly about me for u to judge how much crazy I am about NaMo. I am the eldest son of a Tea Vendor, I am working for BPO that handles Advertising Sales of UK agencies. My father when being in our hometown(kerala) during Emergency (1977) was an active member Communist Party of India(Marxist) – CPI(M) and been in Prison, when then PM of India – Indira Gandhi had jailed almost all members of the opposition party. My mother’s father was a member of the Indian National Congress and so was my mother until she married my father(not sure whom she supports now). I was also a supporter of CPI(M) till Jan 2012, when one of my friend made me realise that whatever the mess this country is in, the CPI(M) has a prt in it, because it gave outside support to congress in 2004 to form the government. Thats when i started researching about different opposition leaders and found Modi the most abused opposition leader. So i did a research on him separately.

There is a starting point for everything, and my starting point of MODIfication was electricity. In Chennai (the place where i live now) the power cuts on daily basis was 4-8 hours a day and Gujarat had an electricity of 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, this was the first thing that moved me towars NaMo. No riots in Gujrat from 2002 and still people criticize him for 2002, when many others states had a minimum of 5 riots every year. He speech at SRCC in Delhi in 2013 completely MODIfied me. This is the link for the transcript of that speech –http://www.leftbrainwave.com/2013/02/great-modern-speeches-modi-at-srcc-feb.html

Hi Uckbarr, I was out when your comments came in. I have been reading with interest the link …

Hi Anne, Nice that u have written something about Modi from your experience, i will request you,, not to believe what others say but only believe what u have seen. The above person “uckbarr” has used a website pheku.in, which was created with the sole aim of maligning Modi. I would like u to check this out “http://www.niticentral.com/2013/08/24/phekuin-yet-another-congress-failure-to-malign-modi-123435.html”. I would also have believed pheku.in, if i had not seen that pic used to say Gujarat is dirty and unhygienic, that place used in the pic in the website is in chennai where i stay. And its for u to decide how u want to see modi. Namaste

Mr. Modi

It’s unfortunate that you’re also fooled by by propaganda called Modi-fication! I felt sad that …

I would not have bothered to comment, if you had not used the website “pheku.in”. That website is sponsored by congress in order to malign modi and gujarat. check this out “http://www.niticentral.com/2013/08/24/phekuin-yet-another-congress-failure-to-malign-modi-123435.html”

How wonderful that the youth of India are so involved and passionate about the future of their country!
