Heated debates are still unfolding about the ethics of looking at the image or watching the video. Does it play into propaganda? Does it deprive a man of his dignity? Or is it our responsibility to bear witness, even if it’s disturbing?
There are no easy answers. But there is one sure truth: James Foley is much more than that last, awful moment. His life is not summed up by his barbaric murder. He was a son, a brother, a student, a teacher, a journalist and a friend.
In that spirit, the Foley family has shared several precious family photos exclusively with The Huffington Post. The images you’ll find below do not show James Foley’s death; they speak instead to his life and how he lived it.

“Regardless of the circumstances or who was involved, he always acted with kindness and compassion toward others. I think it’s safe to say that the world would be a better place if there were more people like Jim Foley in it.”
– Paul D’Amours, a friend of Foley’s since 8th grade, told The Boston Globe.

“Everybody, everywhere, takes a liking to Jim as soon as they meet him. Men like him for his good humor and tendency to address everyone as ‘bro’ or ‘homie’ or ‘dude’ after the first handshake. Women like him for his broad smile, broad shoulders, and because, well, women just like him.”

“Jim was a journalist, a son, a brother and a friend. He reported from difficult and dangerous places, bearing witness to the lives of people a world away… People like this (Jim’s murderers) ultimately fail. They fail because the future is won by those who build and not destroy. The world is shaped by people like Jim Foley.”
– President Barack Obama

“I always told myself that I would never trust a journalist and never confide in them, but there on a gator beneath countless stars in the Wardak sky I found myself expressing my pride, frustrations, and opinions. Jim had a way of putting you at ease, of gaining your trust. However, it was not his ability to gain trust that impressed me, it was his impeccable ability to protect that trust and reward it.”
– Joey Snowden, a soldier in the unit Jim was embedded in during his time in Afghanistan.

Namaste:
This post drew lots of discussion last year when it was first posted. I am interested in hearing the comments of bloggers new to my site.
Magazines are filled with pictures of the homes of the rich and famous. They seem to fly off the shelves at the market. Even today, I drove through a lovely neighborhood where I saw a sign for a Vanguard House. Every year in the spring in upstate New York, some homes are decorated and put on display for people to pay to visit and see how the other half lives…..and dream. What would your house be if money was no object and you could have anything you wanted? I have actually given this some thought and I would want a Mediterranean Villa with an central interior garden surrounded by rooms. There would be flowers and a lovely fountain and every room would have a view and access to the garden. I would never have to wash all those windows, and the site would be somewhere other than upstate New York and the cold snowy winters. Actually, India would be a great place for my dream house even if the Mediterranean Sea is quite far away.
The picture at the top is the dream house in India. Actually, it is the dream house of the world. It was built for the Mukesh Ambani family in Mumbai. Mr. Ambani has the distinction of being the wealthiest man in India. He certainly has the Midas touch when it comes to his fortune; made from a conglomeration of oil companies and communications under the name of Reliance. He is worth a cool $43 billion and is listed by Forbes as the 4th richest man in the world. So we don’t need to worry about his bank account being depleted by this sky scrapper house which cost $1 billion dollars…yes billion!
The family had great fun planning their dream house! It is filled to the brim of its 400,000 square feet with crystal chandeliers and sterling silver railings, for Mrs. Amani, though,to me, much of the interiors resemble a very fancy hotel instead of a home.
There is a health club, a gym, and a dance studio for any form of exercise as well as a swimming pool. There are guest rooms , a variety of lounges as well as 3 helicopter pads on the roof. If they are having a large party there is a car garage in the skyscraper to park 160 cars. Something really fun for the three children is a snow-room, perfect for those hot , humid Mumbai summer days when they might just need to cool off with the man-made flakes. So as not to bore the family, no two floors have the same floor plan or repeated building materials. Yes, this 27 floor personal house for one family has a mother, father, and three children. No word of an extended family living there, but to make sure that all runs smoothly in the Antilla House, there are six-hundred..yes 600 servants! This is to insure that Mr. Ambani can return now to his next building project of the world’s largest oil refinery knowing that all is running smoothly at home.
This is the view from the Ambani’s house….the Arabian Sea and the infamous Mumbai slums. I wonder if ever they give a thought to “Loving their neighbors as they love themselves?”
Oh if you do have some idea of a plan for your own personal dream house, do please share it with me!
T I I I (This Is Incredible India)
Seeing this interview with James’ extraordinary parents gives me an idea of their son’s character and heart. One person, no matter the shortness of time they live, can make a significant difference on others’ lives. His work on this earth was done or was cut short. I hope this inspires all of you as it has me!
Do you agree?
Elephants, as do lions, have two spies, African and Asian. The males are the largest living land mammals who can also swim using their trunk as a snorkel to breathe. In fact there is a theory in Scotland that the Loch Ness Monster is actually an escaped circus elephant. . . . hmmmm The females live in a matriarchal herd and are extremely intelligent carrying lifelong memories. They share human emotions of grief, joy, anger, and play as well as compassion and altruism. ( Wikipedia)
Well I have primary source knowledge of the validity of part of this. Back to India to the elephants we rode in Jaipur. David and I rode the youngest cow who was 17 years old. She walked behind her mother who was 70 years old. the ride was bumpy and uncomfortable, but all was well, until our handler got in a hurry and lead the young female past her mama. When she got to a place where she couldn’t see her, our elephant tried to turn, raised her trunk calling out and generally scaring us to death. The handler was a young, very slight, Indian man with a stick. . . no match for an angry full grown female. The handlers were calling to each other, figured it out and we went behind the mama again. Our elephant calmed down immediately. She had learned as a baby to walk behind her mama and hold her tale. Though she didn’t hold her tale anymore, she knew her place was behind, mama! Pretty exciting glimpse into the world of animals. . . .
So now to the painting elephants of Thailand. Please watch the video I found when I checked the net . The elephant does paint the portraits and pretty darn well, with some help from her friend. . . .
Would you like to see this and would you buy an elephant painting?
An inspiring, encouraging story. . . . .

I am declaring my blog “Time-Out Thursday” because I just feel like a break from all the horrible stories in the world. I know, I know, there are people everywhere who can’t do that, but I thought a smile would at least be. . . . . a smile, for today.
One of the things among the thousands I loved in India, was the elephants.
My favorite of the girls we rode near the Amber Fort in Jaipur.
That bumpy ride, swaying side to side. . . . check that off the bucket list!
So here is the video of artist elephants in Thailand, painting a self-portrait of herself. Whew, the elephants in India didn’t do that or we missed it!
See for yourself! She paints better than I could do and tourists pay up to $60 for each painting. That money helps towards the elephants’ upkeep.
Hmmm. . . . . .I think I better do a tad more digging in research on the net trying to discover if there is “rest of the story!” Do pop in for a visit tomorrow. . . . . . for elephant artists’ update. . . . . .
So what do you think?
Read to understand this horrible disease of continuous pain.
I am so sorry that the video is not available on my post. You can see if it go to YouTube.com and type in Is America the Greatest Country in the World? or the Newsroom. You will see a blonde woman asking the question. There may be something more I could do, but I have very limited technological skills ! Smiles. . . . .
Just as a book can “speak truth” in a clear unexpected way, so can a film. Please listen to this to the end. To me, it is very much to the heart of the matter.
Your thoughts?
This week has been hard to watch unfold on TV, much harder for people in Ferguson, Missouri , and horrible for the Brown family who had their son executed on the streets of their hometown.
I am including a video for all to see of the urban violence that has transpired. Don’t get me wrong, I know and respect the need we all have of police protection, that thin blue line between all of us and the violence and chaos that is obviously a reality none of us wants to see or even imagine. But I am against the militarization of police that has happened since 9/11. We have heard that equipment from the military has been sold to local police departments. This week we saw it and it was horrible.
Has this happened before, you might ask? Sadly it has with rioting in the streets in places like Watts of Los Angeles , and Chicago during the Democrat Convention of 1968. There were horrible pictures of the police using sticks and dogs to contain the anti-Viet Nam protesters. The later is the comparison I want to share with you .
This time, the late 1960s and early 1970s in the country was also very divided politically with the divisor being the Vietnam War. President Nixon choose to expand the war after years of national disagreement, by ordering the American troops to invade Cambodia , the neighbor of Vietnam . The explanation given to the country was that there would be a domino affect in Southeast Asia of countries falling into Communism if we didn’t prevent it. Thus the invasion began. There were very strong demonstrations in the country, with the strongest on college campuses. After all there was a “draft ” during this time, not a volunteer army. The college students would be the ones drafted to serve.
On May 4, 1970, there was an Ohio shooting of unarmed college students at Kent State by the Ohio National Guard. 67 rounds were shot into the crowd in 13 seconds, killing 4 students and wounding 9 others. One was permanently paralyzed. Here are the iconic images etched in the minds of everyone old enough to remember!
National Guard at Kent State
There was an immediate, significant response to this event as hundreds of colleges, universities, and even high schools were closed because of the 4 million student lead strikes. This event further affected the public’s opinion about the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.
My husband was at the University of Virginia in Grad School during this time. Mr. Jefferson’s university in Charlottesville. We saw with our own eyes National Guard tanks parked at U-Hall, the basketball hall. I guess this was the staging area. There was a curfew and it was strictly enforced. A pizza delivery man was arrested for breaking the curfew as he delivered his pies.
On May 5th, we were on the lawn of the Rotunda, the heart of the University as speakers using bullhorns, lead protests of the war, President Nixon’s invasion of Cambodia on April 30th, and the killings the day before at Kent State. Mr. Jefferson had to be smiling.
I remember the confusion and fear that enveloped people in 1970. I feel it again now. Here is John Oliver humor and horror of Ferguson. What has happened to our country? We must have the wisdom for a redo. . . ensuring “liberty and justice for all!” Lord have mercy!
Is the United States of America a country with a culture of war as one of my WordPress friends says?
