10 Favorite Destinations, Year 5

Beautiful places, beautiful pictures. . . . .

Hoi An Japanese Bridge at Night Covered bridge in Hoi An, Vietnam.

For the first time, our annual list of favorites consists of all overseas destinations. Last spring, after four years touring the U.S., we traded our RV for backpacks and set out to explore the rest of the world. While circumnavigating the globe—a first for us—we found ourselves in some pretty amazing places. Here is a list of our favorite destinations from our fifth full year of fulltime travel. Where applicable, the destination header links to the original blog post on the topic.

Aerial View of Sikh Golden Temple , Amritsar, India

11082473_10203814597582148_2885783864221779008_n   The Golden Temple rivals the beauty of St. Peter’s in Rome, in my mind.  This video shows the whole complex tucked in the middle of the ancient city of Amritsar  in the Punjab.  As spectacular as the site is and yes, that is real gold, it is the Shik’s committment to caring for the poor which really speaks to me.  There a kitchen run and stocked completely by Sikh followers that is open 24/7  serving up to 100,000 hungry people with free food.  At night, the homeless can sleep under the arcades and even bathe in  the pool.

Here is my previous post on the Golden Temple and the Sikh commitment to caring for the poor.

Here is an amazing aerial view of the Golden Temple sent to me by by my great Indian resource, Judith.  Thanks my friend.

Before we went to walk through  this slum just down and across Ashram Road from Gandhi Ashram, I bought a huge plastic jar of individually wrapped chocolates.  I divided it into plastic bags and the students who wanted to and I passed out the candy. I have to admit I used my knowledge of children and their love of sweets, but goodness, everybody knows that.  As you can see from the first picture, there was no shortage of children and adults who enjoyed a sweet that morning.

Cassie is connecting with  some women and children.  Notice that the brick house has been painted . . . a touching effort to make a house, no where it is, a home!

Last Group Photo!

11256854_10204073721980096_9160696432921325724_n (1)

Our last group photo on the roof terrace with Mukesh and Jayshree !

Tomorrow will be a week since David and I left India.   As of yesterday , all these amazing students are back home in the US of A, safely.  On the drive from New York City to Upstate, we stopped to eat and I stupidly ate three small pieces of Italian sausage!   Somehow in my foggy travel  brain, I thought this was a good idea and it certainly tasted good.  This is ironic, as I had been extra careful all during our time in India with food and water and avoided any “Delhi Belly,” and then to get it right at landing in New York. So sleeping crazy odd hours and running to the bathroom filled my early days back home. I awoke at 2AM , still in my regular clothes , not being able to remember when I went to sleep or whether I had dinner.  So I made some “veg” pasta  which is the ultimate comfort food, day or night !

I have had my hair cut by  Angela’s magic fingers , visited the  food pantry, gone to my justice prayer group and of course seen my daughter and  and the nearby grandchildren.  I spoke to my son and his family on Mother’s Day. So you can see I am getting acclimated.

Sometimes India is just a memory that seems to be a dream of a far off place of wonder we  had the joy of experiencing for 8 long months during 2 visits. I have so many amazing memories of people, places, friends, food, travels forever written on my heart.

An unexpected surprise yesterday was a text from Mukesh from the Presidency Enclave where we stayed both trips to Ahmdavad! They are missing our group as much as we are missing them.

Thank you India for your warm embrace, your friendly, warm people who just wanted to take my picture and shake my hand,  I count  you all as friends.  And remembering the reaction over and over to my answer of “America” as my country, and the Indian response. . . “Ah, America!”  May we continue to be the “Ah, America!” which these dear Indians dream of in this changing and confusing world  where we live.

Thank you India, and my dear Indian friends, I will never forget you !

Leaving India !

Celebrating the Festival of Hoil !

“India leaves her mark on her guests in a most haunting compelling and often surprising way. I suspect that even now you are trying to figure out how to get back there!” (A comment response to me from Ninagrandiose’s Blog)

The above quote is on the  About page of my blog.  I had not heard from Ninagrandiose in quite some time but I did this week in response to Jennifer’s Reflection on North India.  What perfect timing as we begin our journey home with a 1 AM pick-up by Salim, the faithful  and ever ready rick shaw driver, to drive us  in two vehicles to the airport for a 4:30 flight to Dubai. We have two large bags and two carry-on size. Of course we shipped another large bag and a smaller one after our days shopping.  What beautiful textiles are available here.

David and I both are answering the question of “When will you return?” with we are not sure but we will return!   This is done to keep our spirits up and I think for a true longing to see Incredible India again.  She has indeed left  her mark on our hearts!

Until We Meet Again, Incredible India!

Reflections on North India by Jennifer Lema

images (25)

The countdown has begun.  Two  days from this early morning, we begin our journey back to the United States.

Jennifer Lema is one of  the girls from this group of students.  Part of their work was a series of essays on various topics. This is a standout example of writing from an excellent group of students. Jennifer is 20 years old. I am publishing this with her approval.

This is one of the essays that Jen wrote regarding the north trip.

India fits more than 1.2 billion people into an area whose total reaches only a third of United States. In some parts their presence is made loud and clear, in others they are hidden away and silenced. These are the parts that deceive you.  These are the treasures that are worth chasing after. Over the course of eleven days India slowly opened up to us. She revealed her well concealed age and showed us that time has not robbed her of her beauty.

Where does India keep more than 1.2 billion people?  Some are crammed into a train station, barely able to stretch their arms out on the way to Jaipur.  Others gravitate towards a series of previously hidden cosmological devices.  Some go to Amber Fort and find that they cannot determine whether it would be more fun to ride an elephant or wander through and around the mountainous landscape.  Many more flock to the Taj Mahal to indulge in its extravagant splendor. They hurry along the sides of the gem colored pool and pose just in time for the prefect picture. They “ooh” and “ahh” at the vividness of the marble and they cannot help but stare in amazement at the sight of so much beauty in name of love.  Some find themselves sardined into Fatehpur Sikri, unsure if they feel more overwhelmed by the craftsmanship of the Mughals or by the fierce competition between people selling goods. She scatters more than 11 million people throughout Delhi. Some make it to the airport and disperse in search of calmer waters.

They go to Varanasi only to bump up against a million others on the same mission. They try their luck at the ghats and realize the trip was worth the while. History makes up every particle of air and the city bathes under the beauty of the sun and the moon.  Some are able to find their way to the Sarnath to walk and pray around the ruins of Buddhist relics. They are hopeful throughout their whole pilgrimage, wishing to find enlightenment on the way. Some people are hidden away in Chandigarh under the mighty wings of Corb and others are pulled towards Amritsar.  They weave in and out of the Assembly building and touch the sacred gold of the Sikh temple. These, like the ones who reached Varanasi are witnesses of contradicting nature of India. They are able to experience solitude despite being surrounded by millions.

India has the great ability of making someone feel like an individual by concealing all the rest that surrounds them. She lets you breathe when you feel as if she is trying to suffocate you and she lets you roam around her wrinkled skin, unapologetic for the years of wear and tear.  She lets you find the gritty and the graceful and she lets you capture her even at her most vulnerable moments.  She holds you with a warmness that only she possesses and makes you never want to let go.

Thank you Jennifer.

Our Last Sunday in Amdavad !

 11091344_10203814569341442_6437696754587787092_n

This was from a visit to a step well in Rajasthan which has nothing to do with this post except I like it and it is in India!

I am an emotional  wreck.  Last night we had our last supper in India with the whole group.  One student said he was going to say goodbye to Corb’s Mill Owner’s Building where they spend much time.  The man in charge of the building  thinks of our group using the famous Corb building as a collaboration with Ahmedabad.

This morning we went to “That Place” one of our favorite restaurants this trip . David got a proper English breakfast and I ordered Crepes with Nutella and Whipped Cream.  We will probably eat there at least once more.  I will tell them then that we are leaving from home. They already greet us each visit with their hands over their hears.  I know that they will be genuinely sorry to see us leave.  How do I know this?  It is the Indian way!

As hard as the goodbyes are, I think that closure is important. I don’t want to just disappear so I say goodbye usually with some tears, because each of these people  have touched my heart.

As we were wakling to catch a rickshaw, a man pulled up in his car.  a neighbor.  He asked where we were going and then said he would take us as it was his duty! A gentle gift on this  hot day.  He is 77 years old and spry  as can be.  He had Indian Hip Hop on the radio before we got in!

MONDAY MORNING:

I have lots more to say but want to post this before the computer overheats.  If I can, I will post again before the early morning Thursday flight to New York. If not, you will hear from me back in the USA!
