Meet the Patels

family-photo

What fun this film was last night. We had finished the 10th and final episode of the first season of “Occupied” and David wanted to see some science fiction.  I found “Meet the Patels” on Netflix.  I had heard Ravi Patel on NPR being interviewed for his family/comedy documentary.  He was funny and engaging.  He was the visionary, actor/writer/director  of this charming Indian immagrant story of love and  marriage in the United States.  And the name is Patel is  the  prominent/dominate surname in Gujurat where we live in Amdavad!   There are Patels all over the world, living, working, laughing.

The documentary started off as a  family vacation  video but Ravi who is an actor/writer/director soon discovered the “gem” he had created.  He was quite funny  on NPR saying that it was his parents who enchanted the media during the publicity tour .  They loved riding around in a limousine and being interviewed.  What’s more, the media would tell Ravi. . . “”Hey, where are your parents?  We want to talk to them!”

He claimed to be most hurt that he, the creator , actor, director, producer was being ignored, but after seeing the film, it is quite evident that it was said tongue  in cheek !

This film uses animation, family love, cultural clashes, with images from India and the States to present with humor this age old  challenge of Indian  family finding the the perfect mate for their children.

This is entertaining for any movie lover  with its gentle, humorous Indian perspective but especially for anyone who had loved Gujurat, or a Patel!

Driving in India

This is the kind of image often used to show  urban congestion  and yes I have seen and experienced  it many times as we were in cities most of our time in India.

This video shows  more rural traffic.   When I saw it , I thought of the ride up  the mountain to Mt Abu and the road to Eklingi in Rajasthan .  Anyway, it gives you an idea of the roller coaster ride we found ourselves on so often!   Monkeys lined up on the block fence in the video  for food to be tossed from the passing vehicles.

“Occupied”

14224

Last night we discovered this TV show on  Netflix. It is filmed in Norwegian  with subtitles  in English. This Scandinavian film  market must be slowly opening up after the success of  the  Swedish/American film “The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.”

The acting, architecture, landscape, and politics are very interesting, but it is the plot that was most intriguing.  Russia invades and controls Norway, silently creeping into  power while the the citizens were completely unaware.  The plot is about the usual geopolitical power, oil, EU, and alternative energy , but the horror is that we could see truth and prediction in the story and action as the world seems to be sliding into WWIII.  My husband says that there have been conflicts between Norway and Russia through the years over. . . . . you guessed it oil!

Needless to say, Russia is not pleased with the release of this series.  . . . .Ukraine, Crimea, just the beginning?

Indian 67th Republic Day Parade

Five facts about Republic Day parade

New Delhi: French President Francois Hollande is the chief guest at the Republic Day parade Tuesday, a spectacular showcase of the nation’s military power and cultural diversity to celebrate the adoption of the constitution in 1950.

Here are five facts about India’s 67th Republic Day:

Dog squad

After a gap of 26 years the Indian army’s unsung — or unbarked — heroes are returning to the parade. A dog squad drawn from the Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps will perform a march past wearing striped coats in their unit’s colours of maroon and gold. The Labradors and German Shepherds usually work in the restive northern region of Kashmir detecting explosives and landmines or tracking in avalanches. Reportedly just 36 dogs out of 1,200 were chosen for the big day and underwent weeks of training.

French march

For the first time in Republic Day history foreign troops will join the celebrations as soldiers from France’s 35th Infantry Regiment, one of the country’s oldest active regiments, march alongside their Indian counterparts. It is a reciprocal gesture after Indian troops marched down Paris’s Champs d’Elysees on Bastille Day in 2009. But rehearsals haven’t gone entirely smoothly. “Indian troopers march a little faster than us. After rigorous practice for over a week, we have tried our best to synchronise,” Lieutenant Colonel Paul Bury, who is leading the contingent, told India’s Firstpost.

Instead of the usual stunt men on two-wheelers — picked out as a highlight by President Obama during last year’s parade — daring female motorcyclists from the Women Daredevils Central Reserve Police Force and Rapid Action Force will for the first time show off their skills on Royal Enfields in front of the crowds at Rajpath. The white-and-red helmeted daredevils were seen practising their stunts — which include the human pyramid and lotus formation — near Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential residence.

Camels return

There was a small outcry after various newspapers suggested the camel contingent, usually a mainstay of the parade, may be dropped this year — but officials later reassured the public that the dromedaries would perform as normal. The camels, used to patrol the Thar Desert near the border with Pakistan, make the journey from Rajasthan every year to participate in the parade, accompanied by moustachioed border guards. They will also be seen by millions online in India in the form of a special Google Doodle showing brightly decked-out camels carrying bandsmen to mark the day.

Drizzle precaution

It rained on the Republic Day parade last year, forcing President Obama to take shelter under a large umbrella, in what was said to be an embarrassment for organisers. This year the VVIP enclosure — Indian shorthand for very, very important people, including Hollande and other dignitaries — will have a motorised sliding glass roof to keep them dry, according to the Indian Express. But the roof will be rolled back for the Air Force fly past — which unfurls a vapour trail in the saffron, white and green colours of the national flag — to give them a clear view of the spectacle.

Music Monday “Riders on the Storm” The Doors

I thought of “Riders of the Storm” this stormy  weekend.  Jim Morrison seemed appropriate. . . . . .

Jim Morrison , singer, songwriter, lead singer of The Doors,  poet “storm rider”

Ruined his body with alcohol and drugs  living with continual depression

Dead of an heroin overdose on July 3, 1971  at the age of 27

The storm won. . . . but he still remains the poster boy of the hard life in the 60s and what life was like living for “sex, drugs, and rock and roll”
