Dear and Deer

IMG_1214

Here is dear Grace, my eldest granddaughter helping me with my little shade garden on Saturday. From the image, you can see that my garden where Grace is working, has very little if any sun.  The garden behind her in the sun belongs to my neighbor.  She lives in the old rectory  which has a connecting yard with the school, where we live.   It helped me get ready for the Hidden  Garden Tour next Thursday .  I paid her for her excellent work, and that helped her pay her share on her new IPhone!  Great parenting  job Katie and Scott.!

Here is the River-walk by the Hudson River where I walked on Sunday afternoon.  The deer was also taking a stroll along the water, too. The walkers, including me, were very surprised to see the little doe.  Exciting day in Troy, New York !

Clinton, Trump, or Death

Fact Check Politics Humor
Clinton, Trump, or Death
The obituary of Mary Anne Noland, which said she chose death over the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, went viral in May 2016.

Dan Evon From www. Snopes.com

CLAIM: A woman’s obituary said that she chose death over the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.

TRUE

y
ORIGIN:In May 2016, an image purportedly showing the obituary of a woman named Mary Anne Noland started circulating on Facebook, saying that she found had found death preferable to voting for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump:

trump clinton obituary

NOLAND, Mary Anne Alfriend. Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, Mary Anne Noland of Richmond chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the age of 68. Born in Danville, Va., Mary Anne was a graduate of Douglas Freeman High School (1966) and the University of Virginia School of Nursing (1970). A faithful child of God, Mary Anne devoted her life to sharing the love she received from Christ with all whose lives she touched as a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend and nurse. Mary Anne was predeceased by her father, Kyle T. Alfriend Jr. and Esther G. Alfriend of Richmond. She is survived by her husband, Jim; sister, Esther; and brothers, Terry (Bonnie) and Mac (Carole). She was a mother to three sons, Jake (Stormy), Josh (Amy) and David (Katie); and she was “Grammy” to 10 beloved grandchildren.
The obituary was wildly popular on social media, but many viewers who encountered this clipping were skeptical about its authenticity. After all, fake obituaries slamming politicians are not unheard of. This obituary, though, is genuine in the sense that it was published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on 17 May 2016, who also referenced it in a separate article the following day:

Paid death notices are vignettes about a person’s life, as told by their family or friends. This isn’t the first time a paid death notice has been used to send a personal message to the world. Some have commented on favorite sports teams, places to visit, a drink of choice and, yes, politics.

All content published in The Times-Dispatch is reviewed before publication. In the case of Ms. Noland’s obituary, we’re not surprised by the response.

In other words, it’s true that Mary Anne Noland’s obituary reflects a tongue-in-cheek political statement about the upcoming presidential election that her family members or friends chose to insert into it. It’s not true, however (as some readers have assumed), that the wording of the obituary indicates Ms. Noland opted to take her own life rather than have to make a choice between voting for one of the two leading candidates.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch also pointed out that the obituary for Mary Anne Noland was not the first to mention politics. The obituary for Ernest Overbey Jr., for instance, ended with a call to “please vote for Donald Trump.” Similarly, the obituary for Katherine Michael Hinds said that “in lieu of flowers, do not vote for Donald Trump.”

King and Queen with Their “People” at Modhera SunTemple

Modera Sun Temple in northern Gujurat was  a favorite for both groups no doubt because of dbell’s inspiring lectures in BTA! This temple was built in the 11 Century  and is ancient Hindu.  This is not a step well in-spite of the fact that there are steps and water at the bottom. The ancient Hindus worshiped the sun for its many properties, moving across the sky daily ,   its warmth, and light.  The green water at the bottom of the stairs represents the ocean.  Their beliefs were that the sun was born each morning from the sea. Today with more knowledge and different faith systems, this seems odd.  But think about ancient people seeing the sun  rising or being born each morning from the horizon of the sea, and it makes sense as an explanation of nature’s wonders.

This picture  shows d and abell on the royal seats in the middle and the students positioned along the hill.  I am not sure who took the picture but Royd and Sarah H are not in it. I remember many directions being shouted out to make the shot symmetrical.  And that silly tourist peering down from the sidewalk must not have spoken English!  He will be forever , the uninvited guest!  Here is one of my original posts about Modera.

Indian Family

Namaste!

Family tradition in India is that when a son marries, he and his bride go to live with his parents.  The bride’s family gives a dowry  to her husband’s family for her  care. Thus is the pain when a girl baby is born. . . . thought of the future dowry.  Dowries are now outlawed in India , but tradition ends slowly.  This practice of misusing the daughter-in-law by expecting her to be a servant to her new family, will probably be a surprise to many of you. Often, she must cover her face when her father-in-law and even her mother-in-law is present. Certainly a lonely life for a new bride and a struggle for the son trying to please his mama and his bride.

Of course this is not a universal truth in India. There are many families where  the addition of a daughter-in-love and the subsequent birth of grand babies are a loving and welcoming experience for the whole family.

Treat Daughters-in-Law as Family Members, Not

Maids, Says Supreme Court

QUICK BYTES: Curated positive news from across the web. Read more.

Daughters-in-law in India are often not treated with respect and dignity in their marital homes but are abused and given the status of hired help. No less than the Supreme Court of India has said so, expressing concern over instances of brides being burnt and tortured in the country.

A daughter-in-law cannot be “thrown out of her matrimonial home at any time” and should be treated as a family member. The respect accorded to her “reflects the sensitivity of a civilized society,” the apex court stated.

“Respect of a bride in her matrimonial home glorifies the solemnity and sanctity of marriage, reflects the sensitivity of a civilised society and eventually epitomises her aspirations dreamt of in nuptial bliss…But the manner in which sometimes the bride is treated in many a home by the husband, in-law and the relatives creates a feeling of emotional numbness in society,” it said.

The court made the statements in the context of upholding the sentence of seven-year jail term to a man for torturing his wife, who committed suicide.

“It is a matter of grave concern and shame that brides are burned or otherwise their life-sparks are extinguished by torture, both physical and mental, because of demand of dowry and insatiable greed and sometimes, sans demand of dowry, because of cruelty and harassment meted out to the nascent brides, treating them with total insensitivity, destroying their desire to live and forcing them to commit suicide, a brutal self-humiliation of life,”said justices KS Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra said.

The Supreme Court’s statements were welcomed not just by women’s groups but by people all across the country.

Aurangabad is a city deep in the southern state of Maharashtra.  We were there because of our visit to the Ellora caves, an amazing sites of a series of caves dug out over a number of years and faith groups. https://talesalongtheway.com/2016/02/21/rock-carved-caves/

Sites in India can be near and far at the same time. The Ellora Caves and Aurangabad are near Mumbai but because of the infrastructure and locations, it is necessary to fly the short distance. This was at the end of the 14 day south trip and we were all worn out with the wonder of India.  Oh, another Taj Mahal which is similar in so many ways but so far from the esquistance of the original …….scale, symmetry, finishes ? The mogul had built that for his mama the queen and not his wife. Wonder how his wife felt?

One funny story we learned when we could not walk around the tomb to the right side.  It seems that the day before, some tourists were attacked by angry bees from their nest on the side which was closed the day we visited. To us it seemed simple, just stray to rid the area of unwanted bees. But remember , this is India where animals and I guess bees are not killed. The Indian way was to keep the people away from the bees and not vice versa!  With all the differences in India of languages, faith systems, heritage, cultures there seems a universal respect for life.  This was a Muslim site, and city.

Let me give you a cultural, history lesson.  We knew that Aurangabad is a Muslim city because it ended in “bad”.  Amdavad  where we were  headquartered was started  by a Muslim Mogul.  The cities such as Jaipur , the pink city of Rajasthan  was founded by Hindu people because those cites end in “pur.”

Now you know the rest of the story !

Monkey Madness!

Namaste!

This is one of my favorite images.  It is from Delhi and shows  conundrum of humans and monkeys in India. Monkeys are everywhere  because of the  Hudaman, the Hindu  monkey god.

Hindus revere Hanuman, the Monkey god and care for monkeys in his image. He is the god of strength and energy, also characteristics of the animals.   But the monkeys are growing  and producing without limit. Monkeys can not be killed.  Indians feed the monkeys as you can see  so when they are chased away, they just return and reproduce !  Monkeys are very smart and are attracted to hats, sunglasses, and hands in pockets where they think you hide their food.

Here is another of my favorites.  A monkey adopting a puppy ! Monkeys and puppies. . . two in one!

It is important to be forever on “Monkey Alert” while walking around India !

Hero Haus. . . . . . the Brave German Shepherd

My forever dog friend, Thelma was part Shepherd but looked like a gray wolf.  German Shepherds are reported to be the second most intelligent breed with Border Collies being the first.  And GS are known for their love and loyalty to their  “people.”  Haus was a rescue dog and had only been with the family of little little girl for several months but he was well bonded and brave to protect her from the very venomous Rattlesnake.

You will hear that a  fund for Haus’ treatment is up to $33000.  That may seem excessive but when I was in Arizona, every season some person would be bitten by a Rattlesnake, mostly Diamond Backs.  The cost to treat one adult  is well over $100,000 and the insurance  companies don’t feel obligated to cover it.  People were warned to avoid those bites to insure not being bitten in their wallet!

Thursday Thanks

Last Thursday, before I left for my son’s house in Central New York, I attended a luncheon where the volunteers who served each week at Concerns-U Food Pantry were served lunch. When you sign-up  to serve as shoppers for our clients , you are agreeing to a 52 week commitment .  There are 55 weekly volunteers who stock shelves and  walk with clients as they chose protein, vegetable, fruit, soup, grains, and even fats and sugars. All this is done within the regulated amounts for the family size.  We also offer frozen meats, and toiletries as well as  fresh produce, when available.

Colleen, the director, gave us a   “Father Help Me Serve” mug which will be a daily reminder of our friends at the pantry.  The pantry is a part of Catholic Charities, but open to all people in our area  based only on their need and address. Not all volunteers are Catholic, but we are joined together to help the poor and hungry.  After the clients  are in our computer, the only requirement is bringing a piece of mail each month to prove their address in our area.

In her opening remarks, Colleen shared that Pope Francis has declared that 2016 is the Year of Mercy. There are many times from my life that I, too, need mercy, either from God or others pilgrims along this journey of life.  I want to share the words on the Prayer Card in the picture.

‘ The motto “Merciful Like the Father” is taken from the Gospel of Luke 6. It serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father  who asks us not to judge or condemn, but to forgive  and give love and forgiveness without measure.  The art was painted by  Jesuit Father Marko Rupnik.

We all need mercy as we are all sinners, everyone of us. Go and show mercy to others and forgive as you want to be forgiven with mercy,  yourself! Monday is my day at Conserns-U  from 9-2 and honestly, it is one of the best days of the week for me because of the other volunteers as well as the precious clients we are there to serve!
