Kingfisher. . . . Three Meanings

article-2228739-15E1182C000005DC-246_634x360

This is the White Throated Kingfisher which is one of the three families of Kingfishers found in India.  This bird was very visible in Gujarat where Alhmedabad is located.  They live near water, perch on tree limbs from which they hunt the fish and aquatic insects.

and rises triumphantly to return to its perch to devour the fish by swallowing it head first. This act of hunting can happen so quickly that all that is visible is a  flying blue flash and a splash.

Kingfisher number two is this airline which until 2012 was the second busiest in the country. There  was a financial crisis and a month long strike by the airline employees.  They were very upset and pointed fingers at Vijay Mallya, the owner, and his extravagant lifestyle.  He did slipped right off the Forbes’ Billionaire list , poor guy!  It is the travelers who suffer in not having Kingfisher as a choice with competitive pricing.

Kingfisher number three is an Indian beer. When the English were in India, they introduced beer to India, opened the first brewery, and today Kingfisher is available in 52 countries.  And it is the # 1 beer in the country.

If you remember, the elegant peacock is the national bird, but there is no peacock beer or peacock airlines.  Could it be that the Kingfisher had the last laugh?

The New York You’ve Probably Never Experienced!

I am thinking that you my blogger friends, even if you have been to NYC, have never seen the places I visited yesterday!  It was for a belated celebration for Alice who was 7 years old last March, when we were in Ahemedabad.  The bus dropped us off at 7th Avenue and 28th Street and walked most of the way up to Third and 60th to our first stop.

iheartdylanscandybar.jpg-page-001

This  is  fun place for adults and children. Who doesn’t have a sweet tooth?  This store was the fulfillment of a dream of  Dylan Lauren, Ralph’s daughter,the entrepreneur who opened this her  flag ship store. My daughter and I decided after seeing her picture , that it was Dylan’s dream , but not a piece of the candy has ever passed her lips!

tl-horizontal_main

This is the sight you are greeted with as you enter.  The sales clerks are especially sweet to all their visitors!

photo-2

In the lower level, there are all sorts of candies arranged by colors. My daughter was looking for camouflage colors for Henry’s 10th birthday. It is a theme of Duck Dynasty and we found gummy things and licorice sticks we had never seen anywhere else. Success on our first stop!

We headed back downtown with individual bags of candy to  munch on to keep our strength up!  I had Jordan Almonds and Sour Patch Cherries.  Both hit the spot!  We walked and experienced the sounds and sights…people and languages from places we couldn’t imagine, street vendors of food and scarves and purses, and the tall buildings.

american-girl-place_v2_460x285

Here we are at the American Girl Place just past St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This is either capitalism at its best or worst. You must decide, but Alice was as happy as she could be!

GMAdec2009 (255)Three floors filled with dolls, both contemporary or historical, books , videos, and accessories.

americangirlThis is a salon where dolls can have their hair done, though there is not a place for “mani/pedis!”  There is a hospital where the dolls can get a new head or whatever part is  in need of repair. Alice’s big sister Grace loved her Molly too much and she is in need of a new head.  She will receive  one in the hospital and be mailed home complete with a hospital gown for a mere $40.00!

photo (8)

Alice finally decided on Saige, the doll of the year.  She is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Alice asked her mother, “Is Saige a real name?”  We had a big laugh over her astute question.   We purchased Saige’s book, and a change of outfits plus her pet,an adorable Border Collie.

images (41)

We took Saige out of her box and walked around the store waiting for our lunch seating at 2:30. We had done our shopping and had the giant red bag to prove it.

We finally found some chairs in a corner where we waited to be “ladies who lunch!”

photo (5)

Right on time, we were lead into the pink and black dining room.  The dolls all have a pink highchair connected to the the tables to sit next to their new mommy.

photo (6)

Finally after lunch, we are ready to walk to our bus stop.

One last picture.

And then I saw bike rickshaws!  Katie said, “Mom, please don’t engage!”  But of course I ignored her because engaging is my favorite thing to do!  The driver was from Istanbul. This is New York, the “mixed salad”,  where people come from all over the world…a microcosm of the universe!   He said that the motorized rickshaws, we used in India, are outlawed  in “the city.” I think he was relieved we were not having him bike us , but were walking. I was amazed at the price which was $3.99 per minute. You can sit at a traffic light for more than that!   In Ahmedabad, we could ride 30 minutes to the mall for 50 rupees or $1.00!

pedicabs

We walked for an hour even passing through Times Square towards the bus. We did see thousands of young attorneys leaving the Jacob Javit’s Center after sitting for for the New York Bar  Exam.

scream

Katie and I talked on the ride back to Albany that, though expensive, the dolls are high quality, will last for generations, are good clean fun, and not technology. Were we rationalizing?  Probably, but it was heart warming to see Alice, with Saige nestled  in her arms, dreaming of  the fun times they will have together.

Off to “The City!”

images (40)

I hope that you all know that I am not arrogant, or I certainly hope you do.  But I have to say that I love New York…the state yes, but especially The City!  Living in New York state and sharing a name with the city, people say, I am going to “the city” and I have to confess, to me and lots of people, New York is “The City.” How can that be as many of you live in cities or in countries with much larger cities? Yup…but N Y C was the home of the first skyscrapers, the Flatiron Building and later the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building and of course the World Trade Center. To us, New York is forever the model for all the rest of the cities in the world. Irrational…maybe but you will never convince me it is not true!

Megabus_NYC

We will leave Albany at 7:30 am and ride to the city on a megabus. It is the same company that has the red double decker buses in London. There are these  buses  up and down the East Coast.  And the price is so reasonable. For the three of us to go tomorrow, it is $44.50 return ,total!  Amazing. That wouldn’t buy a one way ticket on the train.  I will tell you about our time in New York when we return but wanted to leave  you with some pictures that we probably won’t see this trip, but we have seen and enjoyed on previous trips.

NYC-Skyline-1The density of the buildings never ceases to amaze me!  The Chrysler Building has the crown that resembles car hub caps.

Another favorite is the Empire State Building…from James and the Giant Peach  and King Kong.

Great shot of Empire State Building.

7975841558_338540c3a8_z

This is the amazing site of World Trade Center. There are two large square waterfall pools  on the footprints of the original buildings.  Around the edges are the names of the people who were in each of the twin towers. Their  loved ones can come and touch the names as the sound of the falling water fills the air. The edges are built so that if the mourners or visitors want to touch the water, it is possible under the edges with the names engraved. The arrangement is not alphabetical order as you can see. Names were grouped together of people who worked together , or friends. There is a story of two men who only met the morning of September 11, 2001. They tried to escape together down the stairs , and tragically never got out alive. Their names are side by side.  The names of the victims who died on any of the 4 planes and in the Pentagon in Washington are included as well.  The names of all the victims on that dark day will forever be together at the former site of the World Trade Center.  The museum will open in a few months and I will  be there as soon as possible.  I saw the fountains and names last summer.  The names that seem to  go on and on and the running water  over the sacred ground is moving beyond words.  Someday,  I will tell you our 9/11 story.

statue-of-liberty2

No trip to New York would be complete without at least a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. She is just reopened again after damage from the storms last year. The statue was given to the US from our allies the French on the  100th birthday of America in 1876.

Our trip tomorrow is to give Alice an unforgettable 7 year old birthday experience.

Ta ta for now!

Quintet of Radiance:Five Ennobling Awards

“Quintet of Radiance”: Five Ennobling Awards

Posted July 30, 2013

Thank you Prasad  for nominating my blog for this award.  I am really happy to be a part of your world through this virtual space. Thanks for your encouragement and support.

Please visit his space for some awesome soul enriching thoughts at hisinception.wordpress.com Prasad  is another of the Indians who have their left brain (engineering degree) and right brain (writing and creativity) both working so well for all of us to learn from and enjoy! (There I go making sweeping generalizations again!  But it is true.)

The objective of the quintet being is to serve as  a constant reminder for our thoughts to remain Versatile to brighten up the dark pathways of the mind with Sunshine, respect our Inner Peace, bring about changes by being positively Influential, and make this pale blue planet an Awesome place to abide in.

~~~~~
I am declaring this award to have no rules except to  nominate 10 other bloggers as recipient of the award. It is an encouragement to be singled out  for praise and reason  to keep going with the blog. I think reading blogs and commenting with our blogger friends is a pretty good window into their personality.   The rules sent to me were to include an adjective for each letter of the English alphabet that describes the nominee. If any of you wish to do that, it is fine, but I have decided not to do it.  It is more work and I don’t want to discourage my nominees from nominating others because of time restraints.  The last award I had was to notify the nominees only and not publicly list them. I have been struggling with these two approaches. Yes, listing the awards publicly may discourage a blogger who has not received an award, but on the other hand, it can give him/her a opportunity to visit other bloggers to see why they have been chosen. After all , imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  And the positive side of competition is learning from the person you are competing with and striving to be better yourself.  We all desire to be the best bloggers possible or why would we spend hours each day trying?  OK, enough said. I am listing the bloggers I have chosen. The rules stated  to nominate 10 bloggers…and I am doing more. I think I am getting to be a rebel not following the guidelines. . . . )
My nominations:
Breakfast at the Track
images (38)
The track at Saratoga was first opened for horse racing in 1863.  To put that in perspective, it was two years into the Civil War.  There were no battles of that war in this area. Every summer for six weeks, Saratoga is all about the races. I told you in a previous post that there are families in Saratoga who rent out their lovely houses for thousands of dollars for that six week time, go on vacation , and make enough money to pay for their vacations and for months of mortgage  payments. The race horse owners who rent the mansions, expect maid service, use of the families’s china,and silver as well as privileges at a club for this exorbitant rent.  They are willing and able to pay for comfortable places to stay.
Here are my daughter Katie and her daughter Alice waiting to enter the track.
The grounds, buildings and flowers are beautifully kept and the old world atmosphere is unique in tracks today, we were told on our tour.  Many have remodeled and modernized. I, personally, love the Victorian feel of  Saratoga.
628x471 (2)We were headed for  breakfast and to watch the horses warm up. This begins at 7 AM and  is quite delightful, in spite of our early hour drive from Troy.  The races begin after the track officially opens for the day at 11 am.  We are not gamblers, so eating and seeing the horses work out was just plenty for us.
breakfastpan
We were just under this awning with a great view of the track.  The breakfast was a substantial buffet with return visits welcome.
After breakfast, we went on the tour of the stables and the other side of the track. From a perspective of that far side, you can see the clubhouse and where we ate breakfast.
photo (1) starting gate Alice is getting  an up-close look and stories about the starting gate and how the high strung racers often fight  entering  the gates. Some need to be blindfolded if they refuse to  be  taught to enter, calmly.  When the gates fly open for the race to begin, they are expected to fly. No wander there is some confusion for the animals.
There are living quarters for the grooms and the horse caretakers as well as stables and everything needed for the care of the horses.  Here is a horse on the way for a workout on the track.
The exercise boys or girls follow instruction from the jockey and or the trainer for the daily exercise regime.
Weekend Breakfast
green-house-restaurant One of the treats we gave ourselves in Ahmedabad was breakfast at the house of MG on Saturday or Sunday.  You already know I loved  Indian poha( https://talesalongtheway.com/?s=Poha for breakfast, but there was just something about the weekends that made us want a more traditional American breakfast. It was an effort to get there, catching a rickshaw and a 20 minute ride over the river, but well worth it. The top pictures shows the more informal Green House where breakfast and lunch is served at the House of MG. ahmedabad
You can see the seating with lots of lovely plants to give the restaurant its name.
breakfast menu-1My architect usually had an omelet,but I preferred the  waffles with honey, a new taste but lovely.  There is no maple syrup available in India. This was the only place where I would drink juice and eat some of the lovely fruit.  And I never had a problem. We figured that the standards must be pretty high for sanitation because of  all the international guests. One highlight in India is the beginning of mango season which began at the end of April. Restaurants  all displayed Mango Festival Signs and all sorts of mango dishes are available. There are hundreds of types of mangoes native to  India. There is quite a discussion of which is the “best”, but generally we heard that Alphonso was the winner. They have a rich flavor and delicious juice.  The Green House was no exception!When returning home to New York, I was thrilled to learn that the Indian grocery stores here go to New York City , shop and have available  on Thursdays,  crates of fresh mangoes either grown in India or Mexico!
67925_10151422574963579_1215560880_n
The absolutely favorite part of the meal would be cappuccino, yes  delicious hot Italian coffee with the foamy milk. We would always splurge and have one at the beginning and another for desert at the end. Lovely way to start the day!
https://talesalongtheway.com/?s=Tales+of+three+rickshaw+drivers
Now if you refer back to the first image. I am pretty sure that either Mohammed or Sunil had that rickshaw conveniently parked to take the satisfied tourists  out and about  to cease the day in Ahmedabad.
Saturday Market in Troy, New York
troy-ohio-farmers-market
Pictures of a Farmers Market are rather redundant as flower and vegetable markets are universal.  I have shared lovely ones from India, but this is what I did this morning. I wasn’t  shopping so much as catching up with a dear friend, Marilyn  after quite a long time. We sat and talked for hours under a welcome umbrella, shading us from the sun,  sharing a lemonade,and just loving the  80 degree weather, with no humidity.  One of the Upstate summer days that we enjoy so much. 2-where-people-can-shop-and-eat
Food and drink is available both to enjoy at the market and to take home.
This is a favorite seasonal food, corn on the cob, sweet corn or “peaches and cream”. Corn was called maize by the Native Americans. The Iroquois Nation introduced it to the English settlers.  Though new to the English, it quickly became a favorite food for them, too. It is especially delicious covered with fresh butter.
628x471 (1)
Berries, including strawberries, raspberries ,and blackberries are plentiful in Upstate New York during the summer.  There are many” pick your own farms” that are great fun for families to enjoy picking and snacking on the ripe fruit.
Many varieties of fresh bread are available weekly at the market for those too busy to make their own, or who just prefer to buy rather than bake.
Indian Fathers
 thumbnail
A dramatic Caravaggio moment
One thing that really touched my heart in India was the fathers, young or old, and their  apparent devotion to their children.  I  first noticed  their demeanor, and then started looking for it. How you might ask, did I come to that conclusion? I noticed that quite often and enough for me to notice,  that the fathers were carrying their babies or the toddlers when the family was out walking. It was not the mamas who I remembered being on ” baby duty”  just about all the time in America.   Now before people take issue with me because my architect calls me the “queen of exaggeration,” hear me out.  There are always exceptions and my son and my son-in-law are part of it. Said architect says, “He learns from those two all the time about being a good father!” That is a substantial complement from someone who gives them sparingly.  I have to confess that these pictures are downloaded because I didn’t have shots of this. But interesting that Google Images had many on this topic. The first picture is haunting but peaceful as the child is snuggled up to her father for warmth and protection.
INDIAN FARMERS COMMIT SUICIDE OVER FAILED CROPS
A consoling dad. . .
I did want to tell you a tale, this morning from my teacher archives!  I tried to honor both mothers and fathers of my “children” most  years, by celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Mothers came to school for lunch and a game because they generally felt more comfortable in school. For Father’s Day, there was a hot dog , chips and watermelon picnic in the park just down the street.  No problem with Mother’s Day, I could count on all of them making an effort to attend.  But Father’s Day was tricky. There were  people who complained that some of the children had no father in their life. I wanted to celebrate the fathers who were involved  and show them appreciation but not embarrass the kids. I would say over and over before the day…”If your father can’t attend for any reason, you can invite an older brother, an uncle, grandfather or anyone of your choice to join us for the picnic and softball game. ( Larger, softer ball but played like baseball)
On the celebration days, the kids would act entirely different, and this happened enough with different groups for me to see a pattern.  The kids knew that their moms loved them and cared for them. If they couldn’t come, a substitute was fine.  But if their dad had promised to come  and was late, the child would be pacing and looking down the street. He or she would ask me, “Where is he? Is he coming?” I would try to console with,  “He is probably in traffic, and on the way.”  And the  joy on their faces when a familiar car drove up, followed by big hugs for dad!  There was no adequate substitute for dad. And I have to say, they all made an effort to come if they said they would.
This is a huge problem in the US with half of marriages, these days, ending in divorce. I am sad about that, but really just want to speak to the dads.  I have come to the conclusion that dads have a huge role to play with their children for their self worth, as a role model for girls on how they should be treated by other men, and as role models for the boys of how to be a man and father. Mothers are so good at the nurturing and  loving of their children and will try to be both roles, if it is  necessary.  Dads just know that your children love and worship you. Be there for them in whatever situation you find the family dynamics.  It is worth the work and sacrifice to love your children.  You will rejoice to see the adoration in your children’s eyes!
Giving Hope
doc515906b8b82e79865583873
What would you do if you had no home, were sick, living in your car or on the street with no phone and very little money?  I am not talking about India today, but about America.  There are people who exist like this in Albany, the capital of New York State. There is, though,  a beacon of hope and help in the middle of a neighborhood with many challenges for the people living there.  I visited yesterday to see the Free Clinic which is part of the Capital City Rescue Mission.HPIM0600
Sarah Schoof, nurse practitioner, has been running this Free Clinic for almost 10 years.  She is also a qualified nurse for travel medications and inoculations, and she has a long history in helping the needy with her medical training.  She and her husband were involved with helping the poor in Kenya for many years and, she worked in a much larger Free Clinic in Chicago before coming to Albany.img028
The Free Clinic is opened on Tuesday and Friday from 10- 3. There are about 45 volunteering medical professionals working through the month. The day to day work is done by  nurses and nurse practitioners.  Yesterday, there was a young nurse who works in Glenns Falls and wants to volunteer in the clinic.HPIM0567 There are doctors who volunteer and come for referrals on a monthly schedule. HPIM0575There is a medication room where meds are given as needed without any charge.  All men, women and children are served from the neighborhood with the only restriction being that they have no health insurance. Delores This is to serve the people with the greatest need. Twenty five to forty patients are seen on each of the two days. There is a need at the moment for more space….a good and bad problem to have.clinic 011 They are glad that people are coming to be helped but the tiny space doesn’t adequately cover their needs. I will tell you more about that later.
There are many homeless/destitute people with hypertension or diabetes either undiagnosed or having gone months without medication. I am including some links that may interest you explaining the work of free clinics in the big picture. donate_box-600x400
http://www.nafcclinics.org/sites/default/files/Comparison%20of%20Free%20clinics%20to%20FQHS%202012.pdf     listening to Linda's heart
I want to share one personal story of a woman, Linda who stepped out of the darkness and into the light with the help of the Free Clinic.  At age 61, Linda was working 24 shifts or up to 14 days in row just to survive. After this schedule for several years, her body and spirit rebelled and she fell into a deep depression. She had no health insurance at her last job and her health went quickly downhill.   And she was now homeless living with her few belongings in her small car.  Linda was too ill to be able to navigate the New Your State health care system. She had no cell phone and no money to buy one. Needless to say unlimited time and money at a pay phone, if she knew where to find one, was unthinkable. With no address or phone, Linda was lost to the system.
Fortunately Linda’s cousin, who shared this story, knew about the Free Clinic and brought her in. On the first visit, Sarah discovered that Linda had undiagnosed hypertension, was clinically depressed, had lost twenty pounds in a month, and she wore glasses with only one lens intact. She was in desperate need of help. A physical was given; blood tests and medications were prescribed.   Sarah continued to meet with and monitor her progress until the meds improved her health and she began to function again.
Since her dramatic health improvement, Linda has been the caretaker for elderly family members, worked at a church food pantry,  volunteered at a senior center as coordinator, and a good deal of her time now is driving seniors to various doctor appointments. The outreach of this Free Clinic has boundless limits as Sarah helped Linda to step out of her darkness, and she, in turn, has been able to help others.
The clinic has a good problem at the moment.  They are serving too many patients for the space that is available in the mission. The good news is that space will become available soon in the Mission complex but money is needed to renovate it into a clinic space.  The size is twice the size that is available now, and patients will no longer line up in the hallways.   A local cooperation, Hannay Reels, has pledged $15,000 for the new clinic as a matching gift, but $15,000 needs to be raised to receive it.
Some of my blogger friends are halfway around the world and are reading to learn about places like the Free Clinic in America, but there are some right in the Capital District. I am including Sarah’s contact information for those who might like to give either donations or for medical professionals, hours to serve in volunteering. At the very end of the post there a free, 10 second way all of you who are reading this blog can help. Go and vote for Capital City Rescue Center to be awarded the $25,000 check from SEFCU, a local credit union.
The Home of Uncle Sam
Image
Samuel Wilson of Troy, New York ,meat packer and entrepreneur, was the model  for Uncle Sam, one of our most recognizable national symbols, but I get ahead of the story.  In 1813, the United States got its nickname of Uncle Sam. The origin of the story are linked to Sam Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, who supplied barrels of beef for the US Army in the War of 1812 with Britain. Wilson would pack the containers and then stamp US on the side for United States, but soldiers referred to the barrels as Uncle Sam’s!  Local newspapers picked up the story and Uncle Sam gained popularity far and wide resulting in the choice of this nickname for the US federal government.
The most famous picture is probably the James Flagg poster at the top of this post.It first was used for recruitment in WW I . In 1961 Congress recognized Samuel Wilson as “progenitor of America’s national symbol of Uncle Sam.” Sadly, Samuel Wilson had passed away several years before. His chosen home town of Troy, New York was and is the town that calls itself “the home of Uncle Sam.”  Now you know the rest of the story!
This year the business community decided to have the Uncle Sam Project. 30 white, fiberglass  statuses were bought and 25 artists and 5 school groups decorated them. Businesses  sponsored them so there are aspects of the town and businesses painted on each Uncle Sam. For example, there is one  sponsored by a brewery with a beer hat and beer bottle tops on his coat. Troy is a college town, after all. I will save my favorite to share with you at the end.
The last ones are my favorites. Uncle Sam Music Man standing in front of the world famous Troy Music Hall dressed in tails, with music notes on his pants and the French Horn on his back!  Enough said about the music hall , as I may post about that on another day!
