The Modi Wave Turns into the Anti-Congress Tsunami

BN-AR908_irajas_G_20131208005259

This man from the Indian state of  Rajasthan has voted and he shows us with the ink mark on his finger. His state had been governed by Congress representatives since 2008 ,  but that party has been resoundingly defeated in the election this week.

Just a quick lesson on political parties in the world’s largest democracy.  Congress has been in power since Independence from Britain in 1947.  This party was started and formed by “elite, educated, and English speaking Indians who could meet and mix with the British during  their rule.  The ruling party is Gandhi /Nehru  family members of the founding  elite.  The queen mother of the party currently is Sonia Gandhi and I read somewhere that she doesn’t even speak Hindi , the unofficial Indian language, but always speaks English.  Her son, Rahul, was the unofficial candidate of Congress for Prime Minister next year.  That is until today’s vote count.

The winner in four of  the five states where votes have been counted ( one will be announced on Monday)  is the BJP of Mr. Modi who is the terribly strong and successful leader from Gujurat.  He has set the Gujurat model of business success and the world is watching. He is also a man from a poor family who is educated in India, not from England.  There is another candidate who did well in Delhi today, Arvind Kejriwal from the AAP or Common Man’s Party. I have had several bloggers talk to me about him. He has termed this, “the election fought on honesty” and his followers carry and sweep with brooms  when they campaigned in poor , illiterate neighborhoods. People would remember and identify with the broom to “sweep the rascals out!”   I personally think that having the AAP party nipping at Mr. Modi’s heels as an  opposition party will be  advantageous in keeping him mindful that he will be Prime Minister of all of India including the 138.000.000 Muslim Indians.  This is a concern of many during the accusations from the 2002 riots in Gujurat.   Power does often become terribly seductive and  balances are always a good thing, in my mind.

The public in India are angry over the lack of services, corruption and complacency of the Indian elite political leaders.   Mr. Modi who is a dynamic speaker has repeatedly called Rahul Ghandi  the prince or heir apparent to continually stir the boiling pot.  The turn-out of this election was over 70% in each of the states.  The Indians put Americans to shame in this regard. voting_elections  Indian people take this privilege of democracy very seriously. In Katherine Boo’s book on the slums in Mumbai, she  told of Indian people saying, “on this day, we are equals with the rich….one man, one vote.”  BN-AQ914_ipolls_G_20131205061949You can see from the pictures, the very long, orderly lines of Indian people  waiting to vote.  This year there were more women waiting to exercise their vote than ever before.

_70281854_70280177

Ironically, this quote from the present Prime Minister, Dr. Singh shows he is very clear about the Indian situation and the dreams and wants of the people. Sadly, he was not willing or able to act  on them.

” Economic growth, social changes, and political empowerment have brought in their wake the new aspirations of an entirely new generation of Indians. This has contributed to growing impatience for faster growth and even better quality of life.  These aspirations and ambitions are exerting pressure on government to deliver more, to perform better, to  be more transparent, and more efficient .  A revolution of rising expectations is underway.”

December 7, 1941 – A Day of Infamy

pearl-harbor-mem-day

Seventy-two years ago today, The Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  The Japanese had detailed planning and flawless execution and the Americans were caught off guard and ill prepared on that Sunday morning at  7:48 AM. Six American carriers were hit but bombers and torpedo planes resulting in 2000 dead and 1000 severely wounded.  The Americans had  radar evidence of  incoming aircraft and there was discovery of a foreign submarine.   But human mistakes were made.

Today, the minimal memorial is over the remains of that  surprise attack that lead to the immediate entry of the United States into World War II.

These brave men are surviors from that day.  We visited the site in 2010 and saw the ever shrinking  group of eyewitness survivors. As long as they are able, these heroes visit the site daily and will gladly answer questions and sign books.

Weeping

Such an inspiring performance by Josh Groban and a wonderful tribute today for Nelson Mandela, and the inspiration that one life can make a difference.

veraiconica's avatarVeraiconica's Blog

The song “Weeping” is performed by Josh Groban.
Weeping was written by a South African soldier, who was fed up with apartheid (the whites ruling the blacks). Josh Groban heard the song while in South Africa and wanted everyone to know about the sadness of apartheid. Listen to the song again – it will mean so much more when you realize what it’s about.

Happy St. Nikolaus or Nicholas Day !

nikolausumzug_in_vreden

This morning many  children in Europe jumped out of bed to check their boot or shoe outside their bedroom door for sweets, toys, oranges or money!   Many thanks to my friend Andrea who reminded me.  You all know I love celebrations! http://andreaschwemin.wordpress.com/

This early Christian celebration was named for a Bishop Nicholas of Myra in Turkey.  He was  known for his miracles and often called Nicholas the Wonder worker.  Nicholas lived from 270-343 AD. st_nicholas_myra_500

There are some rules for leaving out the boot or shoe, yes, only one so as not to appear greedy.  The boot or shoe must be well polished to show St. Nicholas that the child is industrious. And a naughty child must be concerned at receiving a switch for the parents to punish him or her.  But I imagine just like the threat of  “coal in the stocking” on December 25 is used as a warning in the west, it  is an idle treat!  St. Nicholas is not Santa Claus and thought of by most,  its importance is more religious,in contrast, to the  secular celebration which Christmas has become ! 0,,17253677_303,00

Modera Sun Temple ( from 2/08/13)

100_2876

The picture on my first entry was taken on our visit to this temple constructed in 1026 AD. It is not at present a place of prayer and worship which we knew immediately because we weren’t instructed to remove our shoes. It is listed now by UNESCO, a department of the UN, as a ” World Heritage Site.” We visited on a Sunday, as did many groups of school children on field trips to historical sites. These girls were in the 9th form, which I think is 9th grade.100_2887

I want to connect this for my former ancient civilization students to our study of Egypt and the sun god RA. Remember we talked about ancient Egyptians worshiping nature, and explaining the movement of the sun across the sky as Ra riding across the heavens in a chariot? The Indian myths describes the sun god, Surya, as “entering this temple each morning, and filling the place with the warmth of his first rays.” Spectacular sight as are hundreds of bats perching inside the domes of the temples. I was glad it was daytime, and they were sleeping.

I will be visiting lots of temples during this trip. India is considered the most “spiritual country” on earth. It is the birthplace of Buddhism which spread to the Far East, but now is experiencing a renewal in India. Currently, the major religions are Hindu, the largest, Jain, an off-shoot of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, and Judaism. The people of India almost universally profess some faith system.

For regulars on my blog, you can notice the water tank, and the lovely steps leading down to it.  These elements are often seen in Hindu Temples as you might remember.

Notice the intricate carving. . . . .The Modera Sun Temple is known by architects, historians,  and anthropologists the world over. And it was right in our backyard!

Family That Rides Together. . . . . .

Scooters_Bangkok_Nana

This is a picture of the way it is . . . . roads in a country with 1.3 billion people travelling together.  In fact, this looks like an intersection we passed often on the way to and from Alpha One Mall in Ahmedabad.  I had a lovely India comment thanking me earlier in my blogging, that I didn’t dwell on Indian traffic and driving.  Lots of tourists write on all things roads in India. I don’t think it is possible for Indian people to understands how startling this is to the prior  western  experience. 06scooters1

This family is on the way to school. Notice that Dad has on a helmet.  This family is doing well to afford the scooter. This gives them much more freedom to navigate such huge cities. Remember when I posted the list of 50 + cities in India with at least 1,000,000 souls in residence?

article-0-127D843A000005DC-30_634x356

Six people, the laundry + the dog!  Indian people are very good at adapting.

family-motorcycle-india

Five  “stair step” boys + Dad and the baby off to school in the morning.  We saw no school buses anywhere, only kids driven either in cars, on scooters or walking. The uniforms are a hold over from the British days.

One of my first memories was going out with several of the girls and seeing a car hit a woman on a motorcycle. She got herself up, dusted off, got on the righted bike ( Okki and Erin helped her) and drove off.  There was no exchange of numbers and information and no call for the police.  We all experienced at least a few bumps while riding in the rickshaws and no one ever stopped. . . . . it was all in a days experience on the streets of India.   It works, as we saw very few serious accidents.

All the Indian people are anxious to become part of the Middle Class and many have high hopes if Mr. Modi is appointed the new Prime Minister in 2014.  For the very poor, that would mean owning a bike or scooter. Those already in the Middle Class are dreaming of owning a car. My question is where will there be room for these new modes of transportation ? Ah. . . .the Indians will adapt!

A Dickens Christmas Celebration in Skaneateles

dickens-christmas-2012-skan

It seems that this celebration in Upstate New York is known by just about everyone to whom  I mentioned it.  As you might remember , my son and his family are living there now.  This quaint village  is located on one  of the Finger Lakes in central New York.

finger-lakes-map

As you can see, the lakes are named appropriately.  This area is a big tourist draw most of the year with many vineyards, apple picking,  and wineries. Yes, this is the area from which wine is produced if you have bought New York wine. I have not visited Napa Valley in northern California but the pictures I have seem show large vineyards and grand wineries. The ones in New York are smaller and usually family owned and run.

Oh I digressed. . .  . but really I am setting the scene.  There are many tourists in the summer, but the winter is another story.  Who chooses to visit the “snow belt” where it snows or rains every day from October to April because of the “lake affect?” ( This statistic was told by the guide when  my  daughter and I toured Syracuse University. She attended and the weather was not one of her favorite things though she loved  her college experience. From the map you can see that Syracuse is about 30 minutes from Skaneateles.

OK, this dreamy little town of quaint shops, the lake,  and the gazebo came up with an idea bout 20 years ago. They turned Skaneateles into  Charles Dickens characters from A Christmas Carol and encouraged shopping from well stocked  shops and stepping  back into history, all at the same time!  Actually some of the restored buildings date back to 1796 which is pre-Victorian so it looked the part.

Our  experience started by witnessing the World’s Smallest Christmas Parade which lasted exactly 10 minutes. Blink and you would miss it, but standing in temperatures in the teens, made it a great idea to be short and sweet.   English Bobbies(policemen) shouted  the opening of the celebration  with  the modern police escorting the Victorian characters from A Christmas Carol .   Prominent  was John Tyler, the President of the day, Queen Victoria, Scrooge and Father Christmas bringing up the end with  shouts of “Happy Christmas!”  Interactions with the visitors  are encouraged by these characters as they stroll up and down the streets.  There are revels at the town gazebo on the edge of the lake, scenes performed by the Dickens characters, an award of a silver teasel for the most spirited performance, horse drawn wagons ,carriage rides, and even roasted chestnuts with  hot cocoa.

This little Upstate village of 2,450 residents has discovered how to accommodate a total of  20,000 visitors spread over  every weekend from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. Good cheer, laughter, and fun in the midst of winter in the snow belt! And don’t forget the shopping!

Modi calls for a debate on Article 370, sets agenda for the week

The Indian election drama goes on and on. . . .

Politicalbaaba's avatarPoliticalbaaba

In a rally at Jammu, Modi gave a call for a national debate on “Article 370”.This has sparked a row not only among opposition parties but also within BJP.

Image

BJP is known to be against Article 370 and its manifestos in the past have clearly stated that it would repeal the article if it came to power. Modi’s debate call sent rumors ticking that there is a re-think in BJP on the same. It was also felt that Modi is trying to create a space / niche for himself bigger than BJP.

When Modi was declared PM candidate, it was rumored that RSS had supported him only on the condition that Modi will make Hindutava one of the main election planks of BJP. So far he has been silent on Hindutava and Ram Temple. That’s why 370 debate call was seen as an attempt to enhance his image in eyes…

The Real, Astonishing Tale of Hanukkah

3537082503 (1)

One of my class  celebrations each December was Hanukkah, another festival of lights (beside Diwali).  Hanukkah is an ancient Hebrew Festival.  I always try to do some research on my posts to ensure that it is not just my opinion but a higher authority.  This morning I discovered this article of the same name as my post. It was in  Haaretz Newspaper , the oldest daily newspaper in Israel. This story is different from the books I would read to my students about the Hanukkah Miracle of the the Oil.  I always wanted to teach the students that people all over the world have similar needs, wants, beliefs if not the same …they share the beliefs in a deity or something larger than themselves.

This article tells the story of struggle of  revolt that might be popular today. It was about gross  economic inequity and  religious coercion verses freedom of religion.  Surprisingly, the article said it is not about a miracle of the oil, only  enough for one day, that lasted for 8 days. This was the story I thought was the true story.  The picture of the oil lamp at the beginning of my post is similar to the lamps that would have been used at this time in history. Israel was ruled by Antiochus who was Greek.  Many Jewish people had become Hellenized by the rulers, but the Maccabean revolt  was started to return the country to is roots and religion.

The Maccabees, Jewish freedom fighters,  lead mostly  guerrilla warfare, but finally Jewish independence returned. Jerusalem was freed and the temple of the Lord was rededicated. The year was 160 BC. It was a celebration to thank God for His blessings. In the Book of Maccabees I , this celebration, Hanukkah,  was listed as a minor holiday as opposed to the sanctified holidays listed in the Bible which were divinely ordained.  Hanukkah was a post-biblical holiday. It gained much more  popularity in the the 20th century  coinciding with Christmas.  The dreidels, lakes, gelt, menorahs and of course gifts  for the eight nights were introduced during this time.

hanukkah-wallpaper

The Maccabees. . . . notice the Greek clothing. . . .

hanukkah

Dreidels  which spin in a game of chance. . . Notice the Hebrew letters. . . .

hanukkah-gelt-msn-divine-chocolate

Chocolate coins  are used in the game.  In my classes, students  used kernels of corn and each received one piece of gelt , foiled covered  chocolate at the end.

Hanukkah-Latkes

Latkes or potato pancakes  are  served with applesauce or sour cream.  They are fried in oil. Donuts are a favorite fried food as well.  It was really fun when moms could make the latkes. . . .similar to  homemade McDonald’s fried potatoes!  Some years there would be Jewish children and their families would talk from experience about their Hanukkah celebrations.  This year the first night of Hanukkah was the  evening of November 27th and the celebration lasts eight days , ending on the evening of December 5th.  Hanukkah usually is much closer to the celebration of Christmas, and the coincidence of it coming on Thanksgiving happens only rarely.
