“The Grand Budapest Hotel”

The “Grand Budapest Hotel”  is the story of the legendary concierge at a famous  European hotel between the world wars, and his lobby boy, Zero Moustafa , who becomes his trusted friend.images (3)

The plot includes a priceless Renaissance painting and a battle over a huge family fortune.

Here are some quotes from the net reviews  that describe the film quite nicely:

“A flume ride through the imagination of one of the great creative minds of current film. . ”  (Wes Anderson)

“Elegantly zany.  ”

” A comedy of quirky characters.”

“Elegantly off-beat and charming. . . ”

There is a star-studded cast of stellar actors. . . . . . brilliant-new-poster-arrives-for-the-grand-budapest-hotel-151538-a-1387438468-470-75

We ate at the Grand Hotel Pupp and it was an event. Soothing piano music, real china, silver, linen, and flower settings adorned the tables.  As we entered for lunch, waiters were  passing hors d’oeuvres on  sliver trays.  The chef sent little taste gifts to the table between courses.  There was some drama because a man had  brought his German Shepard into the dining room , but it was quietly lying under the table.  The next table was a French family who kept muttering…..Germans and their dogs. . . . . . . I guess they spoke in English or maybe the professor could understand that much French…

Karlo Vavary has  been the spa city for European royalty through the years.  It was terribly run down when we were there in 1995 just a few years after the Russians left during  the Velvet Revolution.  But even then, people were working very hard to restore their architectural  treasures.   I am thrilled to see this picture of the city restored to its past glory.  This was also the resort where Beethoven was to meet his “immortal beloved.”  I would strongly recommend a visit to the Czech Republic  to Karlo Vavary and Prague.  I will post more later.

I really enjoyed the” Grand Budapest Hotel” very much. It strikes me as a quirky adult fairy-tale ! I would love to know your opinion.

Onondaga Nation of Champions

My grandson, Parker,  is playing lacrosse on the Onondaga Nation. He has had a handmade stick since he was a little boy and he is now  8.  His  family moved to Skaneateles  last year while we were in India for a job for my son, Chris,  and to be nearer the family, us in the Albany area, and the Onondaga Nation near Syracuse for Demone, his wife’s family.

The Iroquois Nation which includes 6 ancient tribes was a democratic nation when the European colonists  first arrived in the “new world.”  It is a matriarchal society where the clan mothers choose  the chiefs, though they are never chiefs themselves.  In the ancient times, the clan mothers  decided when and if the tribe went to way. I think that was a very insightful idea. The Onondaga are the fire keepers and the peace makers. This gives you an indication of their natural temperament.  This is where the game of Lacrosse began. It is their belief that the Creator gave the game to  their tribe making it very special. A film was released a few years ago based on the Onondaga history with Lacrosse , called  “Crooked Arrows.”  Another PBS episode was made for TV called “The Medicine Game”  which is the story of the Thompson brothers honored as ABC Persons of the Week  in the above video.

Now Parker is continuing the family tradition from his father who played lacrosse, his grandfather, uncles, and cousins who played or play  Lacrosse for  the Onondaga Nation.  He is letting his hair grow because he wants the braid to as a symbol of the tradition he is continuing.Screen-shot-2013-09-26-at-12.38.37-PM He goes to box Lacrosse practice two nights a week. Chris, his dad, is very impressed with the coaching he is receiving and the gentle , no nonsense  discipline and instruction he is receiving from  the Onondaga coaches. The season begins in May when the boys will play box Lacrosse games at the various “res”  sites around Syracuse.  I am  very proud of Parker just because he is a terrific little guy, but I will be especially proud to see him learning and carrying on his Onondaga traditions.  Bofa and Miss Anne will  with his Onondaga family  cheering him on  as he proudly takes his first steps into this 1000 year old traditional game !wooden-lacrosse-sticks

FLAX Barn Sale Ithaca NY

download (1) What a fun two days I have had taking a road trip with my friend Judy, visiting my Skaneateles  family and going on to Ithaca  to this amazing barn sale !  I discovered Flax clothes years ago and love them. They are generous cut flax linen clothes, usually in very muted colors. . . . rather classic in what my daughter calls “old hippie” clothing!  well, you might ask, why don’t I just go to a store and buy what I want?  Flax sells on-line  and in small boutique stores so there is always a limited selection.  And I hate to  order on line and have to return things.  I think I know my sizes now, but  I am not telling ! Here are some pictures of the clothes, but I must confess there were few if any shoppers who looked like this! sunshine-flax-2014 Ithaca is an hour from Skaneatles, and Judy had lived there when her husband was working for his PhD  years ago at Cornell  so she was the perfect traveling partner and she even helped with the driving.  I have to admit, I am a good driver but maybe  it is my Southern blood that I enjoy being driven….whenever possible.!  My children call it “driving Miss Anne!” We had no idea what to expect but loved the clothes and were willing to explore. It was in empty space in a mall, and seemed to be several spaces. There was a policeman at the door. . . . . nice welcome.  And the shoppers of all ages but mostly middle age and older, I have to admit literally digging into huge boxes labeled such as tops M or L . There were also directions on the walls and hanging from the ceiling.  The sizes are Petite to 3X !  so something to all figure types.    There  was  a fitting room, one giant open tent. Women were stripping and trying on their treasure.  No modesty at all….it was all about the clothes.  People would say…”That looks good” of say “nothing” …as you made your way to a mirror.  I filled  my great FAX bag that we received at the door , three times and tried and eliminated  what didn’t work. Dress too short, pants too big etc until I  was satisfied with the $124  treasures……2 dresses, one skirt and 2 tops….not bad. . . .Judy concentrated on tops and found quite a few.  Even in the large room filled with boxes, clothes, shoppers and even a few men, women were undressing and trying on….it was quite an experience. The last time, I, too, was in the corner of the big room trying on, discarding or refilling the bag.  BTW , the bag is awesome….perfect for India as are the clothes.  Interestingly, Judy and I were on the same wave-link  and were shopped out with treaures in our bag and ready to go at the same time. We had separated and shopped on our own. For us ….two hours did it! home-layout-10 home-layout-12 The check-0ut was snake lines like Disney Land, but pretty effecient. My casher told me that  there was a volunteer who flew up from Florida to work the sale evrey year. Perfect year-round clothes for Florda.  The volunteers work for money or clothes.  I am pretty sure most wanted clothes.  ( Prices ranged from $5 – $45. ) images (2)Photo of volunteers. . . . .   flax-select-2014   We said goodbye to the policeman at the door as we left and he looked at our receipt.  Being hungry, after that two hour exertion, Judy suggested  Moosewood Restaurant in downtown. This is a very famous vegetarian restaurant started in the ’70s.  The woman who started it has written many recipe books  and they are on sale as well as bags and tee shirts. We both decided on  Fritta, small salad and Orange Ginger iced tea…..lovely, filling, healthy meal. We gassed up the car and took a quick riding  tour of the campus, which is beautiful with lovely architecture, and gorges and waterfalls. Moosewood_logo bibimbap Moosewood-cookbook One of the many cookbooks for sale. ae0ds6kj38t8d0yb Doesn’t this look like an architecture school?  This is an images from public domain, as we were home by dark! Here is the information for the sale for today and tomorrow in case some of my readers are necessary.    Happy Shopping. . . .  .

Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi, prime ministerial candidate for the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), gestures at the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji, revered by many in western India as a Hindu warrior king, during an election campaign rally in Mumbai on April 21, 2014. (DANISH SIDDIQUI/REUTERS)

AMRIT DHILLON

Mr. Modi’s abandoned wife joins an alarming trend in Indian politics

Amrit Dhillon is a writer based in New Delhi.

Just the other day, two bachelor politicians, Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi, were slugging it out in the Indian general election to become the next prime minister.

Now there is only one… bachelor, that is. Mr. Modi, 63, surprised Indians by writing “married” in the marital-status column in his election nomination form even though he has steadfastly refused to acknowledge the child bride his parents married him off to 45 years ago. In four earlier elections, he had left that column blank.

The sudden media glare on Mr. Modi’s wife, Jashodaben Chimanlal, has uncovered some odd currents in the way Indians think about marriage and public life, with the ghosts of Mahatma Gandhi’s obsession with celibacy returning to haunt the debate.

First, though, Narendra Modi’s wife. Very soon after their arranged marriage, Mr. Modi told his wife that he intended to pursue public life and saw no role for her in it. He urged Ms. Chimanlal to return to her parents’ home and resume her studies.

She has worked as a village schoolteacher all these years while Mr. Modi has gradually risen to become the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, tipped to win the election.

That much is straightforward. What is shocking are the comments made about her by Mr. Modi’s relatives after his acknowledgement of his married status. They show that, despite the nationwide soul searching that took place after the New Delhi gang rape over a year ago, the views of millions of Indians on what constitutes a ‘good woman’ remain the same as centuries ago.

Ms. Chimanlal has been depicted as an obedient, dutiful, submissive, undemanding and sacrificing woman. Mr. Modi’s relatives praised her for fasting and praying every day for Mr. Modi’s welfare, for possessing only five saris, for giving up rice to please the gods to bestow good fortune on Mr. Modi, for never remarrying, and for making no demands on him despite being deserted.

“That is a true Indian woman for you,” said Mr. Modi’s sister.

In large swathes of rural India, Mr. Modi’s wife is the epitome of the ideal woman: Namely, self-abnegating and devoted to her husband even though he abandoned her almost a half a century ago.

The other curious element in this affair is Mr. Modi’s enthusiasm for projecting his bachelor status and lack of a family. He has veered from one extreme (an arranged marriage in his teens) to the other (remaining single).

He belongs to a conservative Hindu organization called the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which promotes celibacy for its senior leaders.

Celibacy is regarded as a virtue in India. In other countries, celibacy is followed only on joining a religious order. In India, this connection does not necessarily exist. Mr. Modi knows that being single goes down well with voters. They are convinced that someone who has no wife or family is likely to be less corrupt or nepotistic.

This belief could also partially explain the popularity of other single political leaders, too, such as Mayawati and Jayalalitha (they are known only by their first names) and Mamata Banerjee.

Even Sonia Gandhi, Congress Party chief and Rahul’s mother, is respected all the more because she has remained a widow after the assassination of her husband, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Had she remarried, her stock would have fallen.

Likewise her son Rahul, 43, the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress Party. Although he was photographed many years ago with one Veronique, rumoured to be his Columbian or Venezuelan girlfriend, the woman soon vanished and Mr. Gandhi has never been seen with another woman or romantically linked with one.

His party clearly prefers it that way. By remaining single, a leader can be seen more convincingly, it seems, to be devoting himself exclusively to the good of the nation. It helps win votes.

The fact that it is an odd life for a man in his prime to be leading is never discussed. In fact, Mr. Gandhi went so far as to say recently that he would rather not get married because having children and having ambitions for them would make him conservative and ‘status quo-ist.’

Last I heard, these were normal emotions. But many in India see things differently. The reason can be traced back to Mahatma Gandhi adopting celibacy as a cardinal principle of life. To test his self-control, he used to experiment by sleeping alongside two young women. Ever since, Indians have valued celibacy in their leaders rather than plumping for full-blooded human beings with normal sensual desires.

Witness the adulation lavished on Hindu priests and monks. Somehow, it is thought, these people are on a higher level than boring old married folk.

On a wider plane, the notion of celibacy is linked with another Indian ideal: sacrifice. Indians love the idea of people making sacrifices, although it should preferably be women doing it.

So, on the campaign trail, Rahul keeps projecting the ‘sacrifices’ made by earlier generations of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

His mother Sonia goes on about the sacrifices made by her mother-in-law, prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Mr. Modi’s supporters say he has sacrificed a normal life by devoting himself to the public good.

And, of course, his wife is being hailed for her sacrifice in not saying a word of complaint after being abandoned but just getting on with leading a hard, nondescript and probably lonely life. That is the perfect Indian woman.

Interesting insight into Indian culture. . . . .  We can hope that if Mr. Modi is appointed PM of India, that because of his own marital situation out in the light,  there will be an improvement for  women  in similar situations all through India.

Ravi, Internationally Known Fan Vender in Mumbai

Ask yourself what talents and gifts displayed by Ravi  could contribute to India or even the world?  Here is a  boy who is so gifted linguistically  with only a 4th or 5th grade education.  India has the highest number of college educated young people in the world.  Yes, more than China due to their one child policy.   The Indian youth are  anxious to  use their gifts and skills to make India and the world a better place for all of us and yes to benefit from the free market principals.  They are educated , pumped, and ready to lead! This YouTube video  has almost  2 million hits. If you go to YouTUbe, there are other videos of Ravi being interviews about his family.  If you are in Mumbai, look him up and do buy a fan made by his grandmother! You will have an inspirational  story to tell, as well!

Thanks Judy !

Good Citizen in India- Kentucky Fried Chicken

Good Citizen – KFC

This is a rework of a much earlier blog from India that not many people saw. It was one of my favorites. Today is the first of two posts  in response to questions I have had about what is available in India to help the many less fortunate people. Soon, there will be a post about a unique  program for the sight impaired. Image It started maybe six weeks into our time in India…. we started missing the variety of the food we enjoyed in America.  We began a hunt.  Some of the students  found Dominoes, while others visited McDonald’s for paneer cheese sandwiches, which weren’t too satisfying, but the French Fries were great!  And someone saw a KFC in Alpha One Mall!  The mall makes you think you are in America except for its size. There are 4 stories plus a basement where we discovered Hyper City. It became our large box store of choice in India. It was well stock  with our essentials, such as all the peanut butter we could ever want and all the toilet paper we  could ever need! We decided to try KFC several weeks later. We were greeted warmly by the doorman!  Yes, a doorman at KFC! (He is seen in the photo.)  As we approached the counter, we saw the sign  .Image  All the order takers were  hearing and speech impaired. It was startling in the uniqueness of the situation, but the process ran  quite smoothly. The customer points on a card  to the menu item of her choice while  the cashier rings up the order, hands you a receipt and gives you a radiant smile with his hand over his heart.   We had never had an experience quite like this before.  It was very  moving. We returned several more times and were greeted each time as if we were remembered. Well, come to think of it, I guess the American auntie and uncle were hard to forget. I am thinking, if you are still reading, that  you are asking, “Why is she telling us about eating at KFC?”   Good question. Truthfully, I have never been much of  a fan in America  except for the biscuits, and they are not served in India. But now I am a cheerleader for the company.  And it is because of the special order takers. Well, you might be thinking that this is one of many restaurants and maybe this is not the policy in all the KFC’s.  Could be true, but  for several weeks, I told everybody who would listen about the Alpha One  Mall KFC!  I talked to a graduate student at Cept and she told me that in Broda, the  city where she is from, there is an identical workforce in its KFC.   She said that it was stated as the Indian business plan policy  to give jobs, meaningful work,  to these hearing and speech  impaired  Indians.   Can this be true…..a capitalist company with a conscience and a desire to help “the least among us?” I immediately emailed  my  financial adviser  to ask if KFC is otherwise a strong company and compatible with my needs, then I would like to support their work in India.  As you know, India’s main religion is Hinduism and eating  no meat is pretty much the norm for the majority of Hindus.  From the internet, I learned there were many protests in 2011 to prevent KFC restaurants from opening in Ahmadabad, but the demonstrations were not successful. Granted this hiring policy may have been in response to the protests and an attempt to be responsive to the  them.  Whatever the reason, I think it is commendable. What is the point of this post?  I would like to encourage support of KFC and their work to be a responsible representative  of capitalism. My hope is this will become the policy in the US, too.  These stories are not often told in the media so I am doing it.  The parent company is YUM and is traded on the NY Stock Exchange, if you feel lead to buy their stock.  Also, give the cook in our homes a break and stop by to get some chicken.  Oh yes, eat a biscuit with drippy honey, and wave to me in the corner! 283800_10151656746856098_1051579590_n KFC doing its part to help our Indian neighbors!  I hope this post warms your heart as much as it does mine. . . . . . .  image from public domain
