Michael Brown’s Father Pleads for Peace

Michael Brown’s father is urging Ferguson protesters to remain peaceful ahead of the grand jury’s announcement.  A father’s plea for nonviolence to honor his son is painfully  clear.

Gujurati Model Village. . . . Incredible India!

India is on the move. . . this week their Mars Orbiter was  recognized as one of the most important scientific accomplishments of the year.  Yes, a developing country  that is very poor .  Now I am sure some of you will think that money would have been better spent helping the poor of India. This story will show you that under the leadership of PM Modi, India can walk and chew gum at the same time. I have said repeatedly that Mr. Modi is a visionary and a leader.  He is getting things done, 5 million newly produced and installed toilets, and this  village project.  Gujurat is the state from which he was from and the Chief Minister and our home base in India.  Mr. Modi and also the Congress leaders whom he beat in the election have adopted villages to  modernize . The Congress party leaders are from the Gandhi family. . . Sonja, and Rahul. Mr. Modi’s is near historic Varanasi.
Another priority of Mr. Mod since he was elected in May 2014, is to visit and meet all his neighbors to insure some neighborly diplomacy. “Loving his neighbors as he loves himself.”
This is INCREDIBLE INDIA!

Punsari village, barely 100 km from Ahmedabad, could be a textbook case of development. Closed-circuit cameras, water purifying plants, air-conditioned schools, Wi-Fi, biometric machines – the village has it all. And all of it was done in a matter of eight years, at a cost of a mere Rs. 16 crore. (4 million in dollars )  The video is partly in English and Gujurati, but you can see the images, the children in school, and the smiles of the residents.

I have had Indian friends thank me for positive posts on India. That is a no brainer as far as I am concerned. The world knows about the population explosion, the poor , and  the traffic.  I am thrilled to share stories of the marvelous people, their grace in life, and the quiet accomplishment of an ancient and multi-talented people who call incredible India their home!

Any thoughts to share?

Gandi-ji

This throwback Thursday blog is about a man known and loved throughout the world. Was he perfect, not at all, but he was committed to equality and dignity for all people. His lessons to the world are as necessary and important as they were in the 1940s.

Ghandi-ji was  the name showing love and respect by Indians for the Father of India. Interesting that he chose non-violence and civil disobedience to reach the desired end of  freedom and self-reliance for all Indians. Two hundred years before,  the colonies of America turned to George Washington to lead their rag-tag army to victory over the British, the most formidable army in the world. Washington was then elected president of the new United States. Unlike Gandhi, who was assassinated by a Hindu unhappy that Gandhi was giving Muslims too much in Pakistan, Washington died in his bed of old age and repertory infection.  Both men, though by different paths and methods, worked for human rights, the rejection of unjust British laws, and freedom for their countrymen.

Gandhi married at the age of thirteen.  He and his wife Kasturba had four children. Gandhi went to study law in Britain and practiced…

Fair Trade Market in Upstate New York

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to find special, unique handmade items from around the world.  The artists who created them, will  benefit as well from the “fair market” wages they will be paid instead of pennies they are often given for their work.  If you are in the Albany area, drive out to Delmar  and begin your shopping  by working for justice and finding treasures. In Sunday’s Times Union newspaper, there will be an article about this  Fair Trade  Market. Every product has a human story attached, a story of hope, courage, and endurance.

If you are far away from Albany, do some research to find  a Fair Trade Market near your home and support  justice for women  around the world.

Have you shopped at a Fair Trade  Market? Please share your thoughts and/ or experiences.

The Beauty Where I Call Home!

One thing that I really like is that the photos are labeled with where they are in the Hudson River Region. In case you want to explore, they are real places which can be found! The irony is that these places remind me of “home,” which was the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia .  One significant difference is the cold , snow , and ice in Upstate New York compared to Virginia.

Seva Cafe. . . . Food, Love, and Service

Last night, I was talking with one of my Indian friends from Ahmedabad, Keyur  Panchal.  I was telling him about my day volunteering at ConSERNS-U Food Pantry.  He told me about this cafe. . . . Seva where he has volunteered by serving and cooking.  It is run by people who are in the Gandhi Ashram, and follow the tenants of Mahatma Gandhi.  I actually had heard about it because two of the students had worked there just before we left.  The people of India, both religious and secular, have a long history of feeding the poor.  I have written about the Sikhs feeding as many as 100,000 at the Golden Temple  by means of  volunteer donations of time and supplies.  The Hindu Temples serve a free meal and the Jain Temple in our neighborhood served a free daily lunch, as well.  Anyway, Keyur sent me this video that  he and some of his friends made of Seva Cafe and I am sharing it  with you .  It is definitely on my list to visit  on this next time in Ahmadabad .

Keyur, is a graduate of film school, an extraordinary photographer who is  filled with the Indian joy of life.  He is listed at the top of the credits as producer of the video.  Visit his Facebook or WordPress  pages listed below.  Thanks Keyur for sharing and your enthusiasm.

Have you ever been to a cafe similar to Seva Cafe where you pay as you are able, run by volunteers?

Music Monday “You Aint’ Seen Nothing Yet” by Bachman Turner Overdrive

Today in the gray, rainy, cold, snow on the ground November day, a classic rock song seemed a way to brighten the dreariness !  Bachman Turner- Overdrive is a Canadian rock band that  began their careers in Winnipeg.  They soon became  popular in the United States and around the world selling 7 million albums.

I thought the 70’s hair and wild outfits would bring a smile  and the guitar heavy rock and roll and strong beat would  be the cherry on the top!
