Non-Profit Organization

This is where I volunteer every Monday from 9-2PM, my favorite day of the week. From the picture , you can see it doesn’t look like most food pantries.  Why? It is the design where the older woman is walking through  shelves of food with a shopper to choose what she wants, likes, or needs. Most pantries give a consumer a prepacked bag  of food for  the three day emergency food.

There are strict guidelines by the government as to number of servings according to family  size for protein, vegetables, fruit , soup, and grain.  The volunteer shoppers tell them how many choices they have. Oh I forgot the fresh fruit and vegetables which the clients can take as needed. It always makes the volunteers happy when a client is excited about the fresh produce.  Many have no facilities to cook except a microwave, which is usable to cook fresh vegetables but most don’t want to be bothered.  Many clients want quick and easy, as many people do!   Me included. Monday we had a huge table full of fresh foods brought over by  a volunteer.  He goes every Monday to the Regional Food Bank, fills his car with fresh produce and  drives it over and unloads the food and brings it into the pantry.

The Monday team is made up of  7 people.  One checks clients in on the computer and checks a current piece of mail to insure eligibility.  Two are behind the shelves stacking and breaking up boxes then there are four of us shopping with clients.  I need to find out exactly how many volunteers there are making this food pantry run so smoothly.  We provide  6000 meals each month, the pantry  serving the greatest number of people in the capital district.   One reason for that is  that it is open every day from 9-2 except on Friday , when it is 9-12. There are a great many churches who donate canned goods weekly. but the pantry is part of Catholic Charities and started by them.  Many pantries are open with very limited hours.  Another interesting fact is that donations both items and money  are very strong from the volunteers who support it with their time and treasure!

Oh, I have many more stories for you , but this is just an introduction. ConSERNS-U  as  a food pantry but much more. Clients say openly they don’t like to go to another place for services because the people there are “mean to me!”  We welcome our clients, remember their names, listen to their stories, shake hands with them, look them in the eye to acknowledge their humanity, try to help in any way we can, and  never judge.

I was trying to sum it all up and I think “dignity” is the appropriate word.  We treat then with dignity and  how we would want to be treated.

“There but by the grace of God, go I.”

Mission Impossible 5. . . . a film

Mission Impossible 5. . . . Rogue Nation is a fast paced  thriller with intense actions scenes and very violent.  My husband loved every minute of it!   It is just what you pay your money and expect to see in a MI film.  We saw it  on a huge IMAX screen with the very loud sound system that is part of the more expensive ticket.

Now  here is me trying to find some redeeming elements of the film.  Tom Cruise at 53 is a fine specimen!   He does most of the stunts including riding on the outside of a plane on take-off and  the exciting  motorcycle road race.   I also like the pictures of Marrakesh in Morocco.   It is a place somewhere on a bucket list of mine. David did point out that though we have not been to Morocco, we have been to many small cities similar to it  in other countries.  In this film, the streets were deserted  with the cars whizzing by.  David reminded me that in none of the similar places we have visited , are the  streets ever bare but always filled with crowds of people, doing what crowds of  people do.  Of course he was right!  Fun none the less.  This movie demands the cessation of reality anyway!

Ah friendship is important to the Mission Impossible guys. .  . well at least the good guys.  There are familiar faces from the preceding movies.  And the team is intent of helping their buddies no matter the cost to themselves.  In some respects it is a morality play with justice prevailing as they protect the innocent and justice handed  out to the evil doers.

If you choose to accept this assignment. .  . “Mission Impossible 5″ is a thrilling summer ride!”   Just don’t overthink it!

A Pilgrim on a Journey to the Bridge of the Gods. . . . .”Wild” . . . . a film

The other night, I wanted to see a movie and chose this one from On Demand.  David had no interest in seeing  a chick flick.  I think though it is about a woman and her journey and we all are on a spiritual journey in this life, men could relate.

Reese Witherspoon  has changed her name to “Strayed” as a result of the mess which is her life and much of it a result of her choices. She decides to  take the long hike up the west coast of the US from the Southern border almost to Canada.  1100 miles to be exact and a journey all on her own with little if any experience hiking.   She is looking for her better self, the woman her positive and gentle mother , who was an abused  victim of an alcoholic spouse, had always seen in her.

Strayed’s life before the hike is told in flashbacks and half-constructed memory scenes. It is raw and ugly with indiscriminate sex, heroin abuse, and  physical and alcohol abuse.

So begins her journey to discover self-sacrifice, pain and search for  something higher abd more meaningful,  than herself. She confesses to her part in making such a mess of her life, rids herself of the extra baggage dragging her down, is contrite and is  honest about her responsibility. Her whispered conversation to herself is almost a prayer.   She learns from both  children and  wise men along the way.   There is no indication of her finding God in her journey but she finishes her journey as an indication of grace, ready for a new beginning.  Seeing her finish her journey of penance at the Bridge of a journey to the Bridge of the Gods,  the view for Strayed feels hopeful that she will have learned from her life before the trail  and will succeed in her new life!

A Question for You?

From the beginning of my blog, the purpose was as a travel log/journal of sorts of my time in India.  As I enjoyed sharing, ever so much, I continued with this and that on returning home. Then as an additional gift , we were able to return this spring semester for a second wonderful sojourn to  Incredible India!

Well, I want to  compile  some of the posts I most enjoyed into a book for my children.  The purpose is for my grandchildren and great grandchildren who might be interested in whom Miss Anne was.   I guess it is an attempt to leave a piece of me, my thoughts, and joys for my posterity.  I am not publishing my blog, just want three copies for the family.

I have several names of publishers who  do this work, but I wanted to see if any of you have taken your blogs , edited them and compiled them in a book with either a soft cover or a hard cover?   Could you tell me briefly of your experience, name of the company, cost , etc?   I imagine there will have to be an editor to help me which is fine.  This is a project I want to do and have it done well.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. You don’t have to go into great detail, just send a link . Please don’t go to lots of trouble!

Many thanks!

India . . . . Pakistan. . . .”Barjangi Bhaijan” . . . . . a film

Sunday, Alice came over to work on her mom’s gift and then we were off to see an Indian film.  It has taken India by storm as the  feel good, escape fairy tale and staring Salmon Khan, the most popular actor in all of India.  Cross gates 18 Theaters  periodically  show Indian films for the very large Indian community in the capital district of New York.  The theater was about 3/4 full.

On the way over, Alice and I talked about Indian films. They are quite long by American standards, usually three hours with an intermission halfway through for a  bathroom break and purchasing  more snacks.  This film was shot in Hindi and there would be  subtitles in English.

One interesting fact I discovered is that due to the huge Muslim population in India, Bollywood yearly releases a family film corresponding to the  end of Ramadan  or Eid.  Did you know that there are more Muslims in India than in Pakistan where there is 100% Muslim population?  This is, of course, the result of the shear number of souls living in India. . .  .well over one billion.

The plot is that a Pakistani mute girl becomes lost from her mom in Inda, and after  a various adventures meets Kahn who plays Pavan.  He being of” a  kind and clean heart” works to return her to her family in Pakistan. Hindus and Muslims are shown peacefully co-existing which is true in India much of the time.  It is a fairy tale and a theme close to Kahn’s heart as a real life  Indian with mixed religious background.  The chemistry between Pavan (Khan) and Munni ( mute litte girl) is real, electrifying  and works beautifully in the film.

The central theme is of India-Pakistan peace and is based not on preachy words   but  calm coexistence while  still pushing all the emotional buttons.  The film is mostly light heartted with  interaction  and dancing , of course !

Then the sad  news on Monday morning!

In the video, you can see the Sikh turbans as the Punjab is where Amritsar and the Golden Temple is located, and the Wagah Border which we visited  to see the nightly border closing.)  According to to the reports I read, Pakistani soldiers sneaked into the Punjab and captured the police station and held it hostage for 12 hours before  being killed.  Eariler in the week, I heard that all of India was on the highest alert. I can only imagine what that entails having experienced the post 26/11 security.  ( That is India’s 9/11 sneak attack .)

As I searched this morning, the politicians in India are spouting their rhetoric in their government but no further fighting has broken out.

The film very clearly said that India wants peace with dignity with Pakistan.  I am sure this is a desire of Pakistan , as well.  I know there are years of distrust, hatred, and anger over their differences that complicate the process. Many of the problems date back to the partisan and the very thoughtless process lead by the English, who just wanted to leave India as quickly as possible.

It is not dry history at all!

This Is Incredible India!

Search for Human Dignity

Human needs and desires that unite all of us  in our search for dignity in this life.

“There were no paved roads here when I was a boy. We had to walk for 3 days to get to places that only take 2 hours now. There was never any money for school. We had no wealth or property. Beginning at six years old, I cleaned dishes at a restaurant until 9 pm. Then I would go to sleep and start again. All my money went to my parents. I’d hear stories about cities and airplanes, but they seemed like fairy tales. I’d dream of visiting these places, but before I could get too far, I’d be hungry again. So I grew up thinking that the entire world was like our valley. I thought all children lived like me. Then one day when I turned 16, I had the opportunity to visit to the city of Gilgit. I couldn’t believe it. I saw a boy eating at a restaurant with his father. He was my age. He was wearing a school uniform. I broke down in tears.”

The Week’s Two Big Stories

This is very confusing to me!   Both stories deserve our attention and to me. .  . horror! But the first, of the killing of Cecil the beautiful lion has received  most of the attentioin on social media yesterday while there has been little mention of the Planned Parenthood video where fetal body parts are being sold after partial birth abortions.

https://youtu.be/I40MobLZiQE

I would love to hear from any of you my dear readers how you think these stories are possible in the year 2015! I am neither  confrontational nor  argumentative or I try not to be.  For me, it is very clear.  I love animals and though I think hunting for food is perfectly fine I  can’t imagine killing for sport.  And though the second Planned Parenthood video is a result of abortion , it is more about dignity, I think.  Abortion is legal.  Selling body parts of a mass of tissue for either experimentation or surgery is not.  The language has changed from mass of tissue to body parts which indicates humanity. For me, it sounds like the work of Josef Mengele in the Second World War.
