Veranasi, City of gods

A Pilgrimage City…Varanasi

We were in a boat at 5AM floating towards the rising sun. We were at the service at the end of the day. We were at the ghats during the day as cattle walked with us and devotees washed and drank the water from the Ganga.  We also saw the smoke from continuous cremations. The videos make this post long, but it is for those of you who choose to take the time and experience this other worldly city.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

There are many pilgrimage cities in the world, Mecca, Jerusalem, Lourdes, Rome, and today’s topic Varanasi, India.  The faithful travel over miles and miles to reach their holy shires and for a blessing of being closer to god. “The Way” is  a 2010 film about the pilgrimage roads in France and Spain leading  to Santiago de Compostella and the church where Catholics believe the holy relic  of the head of St. James lies.  As pilgrimages have not played a part of my personal faith journey, this look at the faithful who do, was very touching and revealing. The universal themes of loss, purpose in life and personal faith as well as community of the faithful are questions we all experience and struggle to understand.  Tom, played by Martin Sheen, has a profound quote: “There is a difference between the life we live and the life we choose.” This is a powerful and inspiring film to help us close that gap.  I have been struggling to somehow put Varanasi into my blog since we returned from our North trip. So much has been written about this city, much as I felt with the Taj Mahl. How can I possibly say meaningful words to describe my time in Varanasi?  I have only my experience and some simple research to share with you, but that is all I set out to do when I started this blog.

In Hindu mythology, Varanasi is 5000 years old, the oldest city on earth, the home of Shiva, one of their major gods, the place where the world began, and the crossing place from this world to the next. This is the holiest of the 7 holy cities for Hinduism and Jainism. And it is a holy site for Buddhism which started in India, moved to Far East and is making resurgence now in India. Buddha came to Sarnath, near Varanasi to give his first sermon after becoming enlightened. When we visited the site, there was a large pilgrimage group from China. Now can you see the reason for my reticence to begin this post? When I finally thought of “The Way” connection, I at least had a place to start.

Archeologists date Varanasi back only 3000 years ago using the evidence unearthed on the site.  This still includes Varanasi on the  list of oldest  continuously inhabited cities on earth!  The Temple of Shiva is a most important place and we saw miles of people waiting four to five hours to visit during the celebration. Indians seem never to stand in line but move up inch by inch to the farthest they can go in line.  But we saw with our own eyes, a straight, orderly line winding through traffic, carts, rickshaws, cattle, and donkeys carrying their offerings of flowers or grain.  Although, Varanasi is known as the City of Temples as well as the City of Light, the holiest place of worship is the Ganga or Ganges, and not a temple, but a river.

The ghats are steps that lead down to the river. One section of ghat would be impressive, but Varanasi has no less than four miles of ghats.  Two are for nightly worship and chanting and two are for cremation where the funeral pyres burn for twenty-four hours a day on giant piles of wood.  People are walking down the ghats to enter the holy water to pray, wash away their sins, both animals and humans drink the water,  and to wash their laundry.  The hotel sheets are washed in the Ganges and laid to dry on the ghats.  There are ordinary people as well as  holy men dressed either in orange cloth or naked and covered in ashes.  The own nothing in the world and must beg to live. Hindus are expected to share with these men.  They are often talking to groups of people who ask them questions. As we walked the sidewalk connecting the ghats, and were charged by an unholy cow chased by his handler, stepped over feral dogs and children, goats, listening to the continual chanting, David commented, “We are walking on a metaphysical boardwalk!”

Bathing in the river is truly an act of faith.  The smell hits you about halfway down the ghats and all sorts of garbage and filth is floating by. It is hard to understand how the river is holy water, yet so full of pollution.  Some categories of dead  bodies are thrown into the river for burial, young children, and pregnant women. Hindus believe the water will wash away their sins and the last act before the funeral pyre for the bodies of the faithful is a sort of reverse baptism or dunk in the Ganga. The belief is that if you are cremated here or die in the city, you are released from the next life of reincarnation and will go straight to heaven. There are hospices near the cremation ghats where people come to be cared for during their last days, in order to die in Varanasi, and finally be cremated and have their ashes scattered in the water of the Ganga.

Hinduism is obviously one or the first or the first religion on earth. Though today it seems rather primitive, it must be because of its ancient origins.  Student Alert: I also am remembering that the ancient Egyptians worshipped the Nile River because of the gift of the inundation each spring. What I can say is that Hindus are continually searching for God with all their hearts as instructed in the Bible, and I pray they will find Him.  I have met some of the kindest, most generous, patient, friendly people during  my travels through India.

One question, I have in finishing my musings is, “ Where do the people who live in Mecca, Rome, Jerusalem, Varanasi  or other pilgrimage cities go to make their pilgrimages?”

Mr. Modi People

congress

Image from  http://qz.com/210300/an-election-rout-leaves-congress-with-a-shattered-dynasty/

Here are Modi’s  people in an impromptu celebratory parade on this historic day .. . . .   These who now  have hope in their hearts  because Mr. Modi spoke truth to power  for them and they trusted  him as one of their own, giving him a  landslide election victory in return.

Modi Wins in a Landslide!

timthumb

Modi Landslide. . . . . . .

http://www.economist.com/blogs/banyan/2014/05/indias-results-roll

“INDIA has won” tweeted Narendra Modi, on May 16th, his first public comment after official counting from India’s general election made it clear that he, and his Bharatiya Janata Party, had delivered a landslide victory beyond the expectations of almost everyone. The scale of the BJP win was remarkable. It swept entire states, including Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand. More importantly it made enormous strides in two crucial, and massive, northern states, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There not only did Congress do disastrously, regional parties were also badly walloped. As of lunch time, it appeared that the BJP and its closest allies (known as the NDA) would have 324 seats of the 543 parliament, with the BJP alone getting 275. BJP spokesmen called that, rightly, a “tectonic shift in the polity of India”. It is the first time since 1984 that a single party has enough seats to rule alone.

Much is made is the importance of Mr Modi as a leader, who inspired great enthusiasm among the voters, especially youngsters. Clearly, too, there is demand for a stronger economy and more development. So strong is his victory, it might be no other party has enough seats to serve automatically as the opposition, since to lead it in parliament you need at least 10% of the seats, and Congress’s total haul might include even fewer than that. The array of ministers and prominent figures in Congress who have lost their seats is impressive. Mr Modi will give speeches and enjoy victory parades, first in Gujarat (where he has already visited his mother to get her blessings), then on May 17th in Varanasi. He may be sworn in as prime minister on May 21st, though obviously he hardly need wait to start forming a government and picking his ministers. “

A Beta Parent’s Manifesto

 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jen-nessel/a-beta-parent-manifesto_b_5288334.html

Posted 05/08/2014 from Huffington Post

“What comes after one?” asked the mother, pushing her 3-year-old on the swings. He was too busy laughing to answer, so she was forced to repeat, “What comes after one?”

“Two,” he mumbled, looking off at the climbing structure.

“Good. What comes after two?”

“Three.”

“Now what comes after three?”

Silence.

“What comes after three?”

Grudgingly, “Four.”

“Now what comes after four?”

And here is where I fell in love with the boy. He glared at his mother and blurted, “Orange!”

Can you blame him? Who wants to do math drills when there’s swinging to do and monkey bars to climb and popsicles to eat and, oh, you know, childhood to have?

Kids aren’t the only ones rebelling. Contrary to what you might read, there are parents out there who don’t hire bilingual nannies or fall to pieces when their kids brush up against a non-organic toy. Let’s call them Beta Parents. I am one of them. I let things slide. My kid eats floor food. Sometimes we go an entire week without going to a class. I have barely begun his application to MIT.

Who are my fellow Beta Parents?

Beta Parents don’t spend $2,000 to prep their 4-year-old for tests.

Beta Parents don’t try to engage their children every second of the day. Sometimes they leave them alone with a crayon, a piece of string and a cardboard box.

Beta Parents let their children eat processed cheese.

Beta Parents own televisions.

Beta Parents don’t do their children’s homework.

Sometimes Beta Parents miss bedtime and are inconsistent, because human beings are inconsistent.

Beta parents don’t hide Vitamin A-rich pumpkin purée in the pancakes, nor do they make “cupcakes” out of cantaloupe with “frosting” made of beet-based food coloring and Greek yogurt.

Beta Parents don’t have air purifiers, and if we do, we forget to change the filters.

Beta Parents don’t read parenting books — except maybe Go the F**k to Sleep.

Beta Parents don’t subscribe to a particular philosophy of child-rearing. Beta Parents aren’t even always Beta Parents. Once in a while we’re Alpha Parents. Sometimes we’re Omegas.

Beta Parents aren’t lazy, selfish parents; we just don’t think it’s healthy for children to be the center of the universe at every moment or to feel pressure to succeed while digging in the sandbox.

Here’s a radical thought: What if we all worried about making our children into good people, instead of successful people? And what if, instead of turning them into little bonsai projects, we let them grow a little wild?

Beta Parents, unite! Our kids have nothing to lose but their third homes in the Hamptons!

PS. . . .  A few weeks ago, the professor had a request from a self-described “helicopter mom” to meet with him and another faculty member, and oh yes with her son!  She had some concerns about her son’s curriculum choices. Parents are paying a huge tuition at this private university, but he has never had this happen before.  He has had moms push into his office when the student is being interviewed.. . . . .only once.  The next time he was ready with a chair for her to sit in and the promise that he would answer her questions after the interview.  I heard  that mothers are going with their children on  job interviews, preparing portfolios, and writing thank you notes to the person interviewing.

PPS.. . . .   I don’t know if this “syndrome” is running rampant in the rest of the world, but please tell me about parenting styles where you are!

New Yorkers Love. . . . .

In Love

22 Things People From New York State Love

New Yorlgates and staying the hell away from Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

1. Arguing Upstate Vs. Downstate Vs. Everything In Between

New York State Love

We live in Rensselaer County next to Albany County. It is 2 hours north of  NYC on the Hudson River.

Source: Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance Facebook

Upstate is technically everywhere outside of the NYC metro area, with people out west preferring to go by WNY and the folks in the center insisting on CNY, even breaking it down by area code. Downstate is technically all of the NYC boroughs and Long Island with Westchester caught in purgatory. But everyone will argue this point to their grave even though it’s all just an unofficial, imaginary line in the first place.

One thing Upstaters do agree on is that NYC is in no way representative of New York State. The people in NYC just respond with, “There’s life beyond NYC?”

2. The Only Wings That Matter

New York State Love

Source: Duff’s Famous Wings Facebook

Buffalo, home of wings. Not Buffalo wings, just wings. Or maybe even chicken wings, but never Buffalo wings. Where medium is hot, medium-hot is very hot, and hot will melt your face off. The debate rages on between Duff’s vs. Anchors, but it wouldn’t be a proper nod to New York without everyone’s favorite Super Bowl food.

3. Being Pro Yankees Or Pro Mets

New York State Love

Source: Memegenerator.net

Most people in New York will tell you that it’s fairly easy to tell the Yankees fans from the Mets fans. The Mets fans are the ones who actually really love baseball even if they’re always losing and are the constant butt of jokes. The Yankees fans are the ones who like winning and have that NYC kind of ‘tude.

4. Knowing Pizza Everywhere Else Simply Doesn’t Exist

New York State Love

Source: Pinterest

Everywhere you go in the country, there are claims to having the best slice of pizza, some even claiming to be “better than New York!” Well, New Yorkers don’t have to make promises about their pizza because it really is the best, which is a fact. You can look it up after you put down your utensils, Chicago.

5. Weekends At The Finger Lakes

New York State Love

Source: Visit Finger Lakes Facebook

What’s your favorite Finger Lake? And don’t say “the middle one.” That joke is dead. Everyone in New Yorkers love a weekend out at the Finger Lakes, especially for touring wine country, the endless scenic trails, apple picking, and taking a lift on the Sky Rides.

6. We’ve Got Your Niagara Falls Right Here

New York State Love

Source: Explore Niagara Falls USA Facebook

Canada, eh? New Yorkers don’t need Canada’s view of Niagara because they’ve got their own right on their own turf and it’s spectacular. And you don’t need to cross the border or worry about coming home with a pocket full of Canadian coins.

7. Using Their Spiedie Senses

Spiedies are to CNY what wings are to WNY. New Yorkers will drive obnoxiously out of their way to Binghampton just to be able to get a famous Spiedie sub from Spiedie & Rib Pit, with some of the most perfectly marinated chicken or beef to ever cross the threshold of your lips.

8. How The Rest Of The Country Shut Downs Over Two Inches Of Snow

New York State Love

Source: GoErie.com Erie Times-News Facebook

Georgia makes headline news for going full apocalypse over two inches of snow? New Yorkers can’t help but laugh and roll their eyes. Ever heard of Lake Effect snow? Erie got pounded with 138 inches during the 2013 winter and Syracuse sees an annual hit of 115 inches and they still all manage to get to school, work, and squeeze in a game of ice hockey.

9. A Plate Full Of Chicken Riggies…

New York State Love

Source: Urbanspoon

One of Utica’s most beloved contributions to New York culture is their famous dish of Chicken Riggies. This dish can be found throughout the Upstate area, but Utica knows that no one does it quite like they do, which is why they’re home to the annual Riggiefest.

10. … And A Bunch Of Other Amazing Food That No One Else Understands

New York State Love

Source: Flickr user Greg Morgan

Salt potatoes, Coneys from Heid’s, Garbage Plates from Nick Tahou Hots, tomato pies, Utica greens, white hots from Zweigle’s , Grandma Browns Baked Beans, Medford Mustard, melba sauce, Bombers burritos… If you’re not a New Yorker, you won’t get it. But you should, because you’re missing out.

11. New Year’s Eve Far, Far Away From Times Square

New York State Love

Source: Times Square NYC Facebook

You can always find someone who has gone to see the ball drop in person. It’s a bucket list thing and does have a certain allure on TV. But if you tell most New Yorkers that you’re headed down to Manhattan for New Year’s Eve, they’ll tell you that you’ve lost your mind. And, not coincidentally, most people who do it usually only ever do it once. Even if they live in New York City.

12. Having An Intense Love Affair With Their Grocery Store

New York State Love

Source: Pinterest

If you were to hold a gun to a New Yorker’s head and force them to choose between their Wegmans or their kids, I’m not saying that they’ll pick Wegmans, but I am saying you’ll get a pause. No store on earth could ever compare to Wegmans in their eyes. Except, of course, a SuperWegs.

13. MoMa, Every Single Time

New York State Love

Source: MoMa Facebook

You could visit the MoMa a hundred different times and each time still feels new. It really is the best modern museum in the world, located right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, making it worth a trip into NYC even for Upstaters.

14. Tailgating At SPAC

New York State Love

Source: SPAC Facebook

The venue and shows are pretty great, too. But everyone knows the real reason you go to SPAC is for the party that happens before the party gets started. Getting loaded on Spiedies and Gennys in a red Solo at a picnic table in the park instead of a parking lot makes any show the best show ever.

15. Knowing There’s No Brew Like A Home Brew

New York State Love

Source: The Genesee Brewery Facebook

Whether you’re relaxing at the lake or hanging out at a party in your friend’s basement, chances are there’s a case of Saranac and Genny. Both beers are home brewed in Upstate New York. Labatts is a popular brand, too, but since they’re brewed in Canada, it only gets a friendly nod.

16. The Coolest Mountains On The East Coast

New York State Love

Source: Wikipedia author Sammetsfan

When you visit your aunt up in Lake George, you can’t help but marvel at the Adirondack Mountains. Their dome formation makes them unlike any other in the U.S. So when you’re friends down in Pennsylvania tell you they have the best mountains on the East Coast, just hop off your scooter, snap a picture, and apologize for ruining their dreams.

17. Long Drives Along The Great Lakes

New York State Love

Source: Great Lakes Seaway Trail Facebook

Along with the Finger Lakes and Lake George, New York also has the Great Lakes which provides one of the most relaxing, scenic drives you could ever hope to take. The Great Lakes Seaway Trail was even named among the top nine Great American Drives by Budget Travel in 2010.

18. Barbecue Bigger Than A T-Rex

New York State Love

Source: Dinosaur BBQ

New Yorkers have no desire to travel any farther than their backyard for barbecue because they’ve got the real deal right here. Even though it’s all over the country now, the original Dinosaur Barbecue was born in Syracuse and remains a household name throughout New York, with Brooks as a close second.

19. Vacations In The Thousand Islands

New York State Love

Source: Visit 1000 Islands Facebook

The Thousand Islands aren’t a favorite New York vacation destination just because it’s compiled of over 1,800 islands between New York and Canada at the corner of Lake Ontario and is, quite possibly, the most magnificent landscape on earth.

That helps, of course, but the best part is that the cat still seems to be in the bag, making the tourism very local to the area. And New Yorkers like keeping the things they love to themselves.

20. The Greatest New York State Fair

New York State Love

Source: The Great New York State Fair Facebook

Every state loves their state fair, but New Yorkers know they have the best one to be found and flock to Syracuse from all over the state for this 12 day event of pure awesome.

Where else can you indulge of all of New York’s favorite delicacies while riding a monster Ferris Wheel and praying that you don’t fall over the flimsy rails to your death?

21. Stewart’s Ice Cream

New York State Love

Source: Stewart’s Shops Facebook

Ben & Jerry’s? Meh. Breyer’s? Child’s play. Everyone in New York knows that they only ice cream that matters is found at Stewart’s. The fact that you can get it while filling up your gas tank only makes it even better.

22. Waiting All Year For Fall To Eat Cider Donuts

New York State Love

Source: Flickr user Deanna Zandt

There are a lot of things to love about fall in New York but the plethora of apple cider donuts is easily the best of them all. The best way to get them is fresh from an orchard while you’re waiting in the ridiculously long line for the haunted hayride.

Music Monday, Georgia Satellites “Keep Your Hands to Yourself”

Another southern band  with great lyrics!  Georgia Satellites are even more “good old boys” than Skynyrd, I think. This song is  great to play in the car with teenagers. . .. hoping they heed the message and not the example in the video.

Big smiles for a lovely spring week !

Please Remember Me. . . . . . . .

holding-hands

When you are old, please remember me.
Today you don’t understand, but you will then.
Someday you’ll say, “Now I see what she meant.”
When you are old, please remember me.
Be patient with me, compassionate even.
I need to go slower, no longer to rush.
When you are old, please remember me.
Today you don’t understand, but you will then.

Happy Mother’s Day to mothers of all ages !
