This is an ashram in India where widows live. They must shave their head, wear white, and beg for their meager life. Their families are too poor to take them in to feed them so this is where they live. The young beautiful widows are forced into prostitution for money. Widows are not allowed to remarry. This is the fate even for the child widows who are younger than twelve.
This week there was most unusual news that a wealthy man invited thousands of widows to his son’s wedding. They were given bright colorful clothes, allowed to eat and dance. ( Widows are not allowed to participate in celebrations!) In return, they were asked to give the young couple a blessing for their marriage.
Cultural beliefs and practices are so hard to change but I hope and pray others will follow with this generosity and love for these women. After all, most, if not all, faith systems command “care for widows and orphans.”
This is a movie review of this situation in India. It is available on Youtube.com and very interesting.
Thank you for sharing this most moving of stories. I feel so helpless but I feel. If you know of anything that will directly improve the plight of these women, please share.

There has been such a state of impunity in sex crimes, treatment of widows, orphans with the sex trade, stealing property and this story. Now that the evil practices are out in the light, it will improve. The leaders don’t want this publicity. Just be informed and work with organizations who are working to rid this evil from the world. I J M International Justice Mission is a great one. You can google if you want. Thanks !
