“What a privilege to taste it!”

With all the tragic news coming from West Africa about the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone, only two countries away from the Ivory Coast, here is Alfonse, a cocoa farmer.  Witness his first taste of western chocolate  after a lifetime of growing and harvesting the beans.  His joy will bring a smile to your face.  Lord have mercy on the Africans and the rest of us!

The last pandemic was in 1918 when the Spanish Flu infected  500 million souls.  Three to 5% of the world’s population died. As a little girl, I remember stories about my Daddy’s sister Mary dying in the pandemic, long before my birth.   Do any of you have pandemic stories from 1918?  Does anyone remember their first taste of chocolate?

All the schools in Sierra Leone are closed in hopes that will slow the virus.  A cyclist from Sierra Leone who was competing in Edinburgh at the Commonwealth games has been tested.  He was quarantined for 4 days before getting the news that he is not sick.  He, though, says he is afraid to return to Sierra Leone after the games.

  1. Wow … In the world made equal by god we don’t see what we have and complain for what we don’t… Something we grew up eating all our lives and taking for granted can be such a rare privilege for others … Very inspiring… Thank you for sharing this Dear.

  2. My mother’s uncle (her mother’s brother) got Spanish Flu, but survived. Apparently, I’ve met him, but I don’t remember him. I don’t remember my first taste of chocolate either. It must have been very early. I still enjoy it immensely. Great story!
