‘Nebraska” the Movie

NEBRASKA-MOVIE-01-1024x734

I had really wanted to see this film. . . . a  black and white road trip, but professor suggested that we watch it at home on Netflix.  He was thinking it was not going to be his cup of tea, and he could then read a book or something!  He was wrong and I was right. We both loved it!

It is a bittersweet personal journey of Woody (Bruce Dern) who drinks too much, talks to little and cusses most of the time.  He is old and sick and slowing slipping away. But this all changes when he received a notice that he has won $1,000.000.00 sweepstakes prize in the mail . It is one of these notices we all have received and tossed in the garbage, but Woody “believes what people tell him” and is determined to  get to Lincoln, Nebraska  to collect his prize even if he has to walk the hundreds of miles.

The journey metaphor continues with the old man’s dream, and his son David’s journey to understand and accept his father’s personality, needs,  dream, and past life.

Nebraska film still

 There is even a family reunion. . . . . . . old-people-watching-tv (1)

Ah, the humor . . . . . is hilarious.  I thought of ‘Fargo’ when it was much funnier seeing it with a crowd in the theater, but ‘Nebraska’ is tear dropping funny as the characters just say what they say and do what they do. And there were some tears, at least mine for the poignant moments. I was worried about the ending but it was a delightful surprise.  There is no hint of the director making fun of these simple people but just  him sharing a loving family tale.  The story just happens between heartbreak and hilarity as experienced in this family.

” This movie is about nothing at all and everything that counts.”                        Ty Burr, Boston Globe

I was going to keep this on the side burner, maybe for awhile. Now, I want to go get it from the redbox! Thanks so much for this positive review. I knew it was nominated, but I wasn’t wanting to see it if it were depressing. (I loved “Schindler’s List,” but you need to be in the proper mood for it, same as “12 Years a Slave.” I wrote a post about seeing it with a friend, Bill, and then, one about the main actor, Chewetel Ejiofor. It is a fantastic movie and has a ‘happy ending.’)

My favorite movies have to be believable in the emotion and I have to find at least one sympathetic character. I don’t like aliens and terrible murders etc. I laughed until I cried and then cried at the poignant moments. I loved it and will look forward to your impression.

That’s one I’ll definitely have to watch.
Now, under the “do unto others”, I have awarded you a Versatile Blogger award. Since I still don’t have a clue how to send it on, you will have to work for it, by going to that blog and somehow saving it to yours. Not being a computer expert, I’m now sure how to do it myself, but I think I got it on to mine, so with your experience I’m sure you’ll ace this one.
