This morning I brightened my dreary, cold, snowy day with a mango and blueberry whey shake so I thought I would share what I could about this amazing fruit.
This fruitwala is exhausted and catching a few Z’s while he can during the 100 day or so of mango madness in India that coincides with March Madness in the States. One is about oblong fruit and the other about basketball. This shop in Mumbai ships mangoes all over the world to wealthy expats living their dream and remembering and wanting the fruit of their youth.. . . . The King of Fruits.
“Mangoes are the only fruit appreciated by everyone!”
In India, there are really only two seasons: monsoon from June to September and mango season from March through May. Mangoes are vulnerable to the weather, air temperature ,and an unexpected rain. This brings drama either real or imagined to the masses as they wait not very patiently for their precious mangoes.
Each region has its own local variety but Alphonso is the undisputed King of Mangoes recognizable by its saffron color both the skin and the meat.
Alphonso has appeared on lists of 100 Things You Must Eat Before You Die ! There is a wide suspension that larger Alphonso mangoes are being shipped out of the country by thriving entrepreneurs for a higher price than they would get in India.
The fruit is large with a seed in the middle. I peel the skin to get the sweet juicy fruit. To me, the closet fruit available here is peaches when they are ripe. The problem is picking either when they are green, to ship and sell. That never allows the natural process that produces sweet juicy fruit that is the fruit that is tree ripened.

And another of my favorites. . . . mango lassi made from mango juice and yogurt. This is available all the time and very popular. The only drawback is the calories!
Or you can drink the rich sweet pulpy juice. 
My friend Judy filled me in on the thanks that are Thursday as it is the day the Indian markets in the Albany area make a mango run to New York City. The cost is $15 or 750 rupees for a dozen. They come from different countries and are good but the best are from India!

They look so good. Certain breeds of mangoes are good when they are semi ripen.

I have to admit it is all a tad confusing to me. I didn’t know that but I had heard that some are ripe when they are still green. Confusing with , I think, a hundred varieties in all!

You are right, some do ripe (not completely) when they are still green from the outside. Those are still a bit firm but yet so sweet. For some who do like a bit sour, crunchy and sweet then there are kinds that are good for that.

I don’t think I’d eaten a mango until I moved to Australia about 6 years ago. Now I view them as nature’s candy bar. Yum.

This was a wonderful post! I gave in to my periodic craving for mangoes just the other day lol I grew up in East Africa and sometimes I get nostalgic for childhood scents, flavors and experiences. Hooray for mangoes!

Absolutely love mangooeess! I especially love drinking mango juice first thing in the morning. It has been a part of my morning breakfast ever since I discovered the amazingly tasty juice – KDD harvest mango juice. I am hooked on to this juice! When I started the blog, I didn’t want just a travel log of our time in India. Since returning home, I have continued writing on this and that depending on my memories or things in the US. Mangoes are wonderful , and I am glad we were in Ahmadabad during the season in 2013 so I had real flavorful Indian ones ! Big smiles. . . . .
