HIROSHIMA by John Hersey

Hiroshima

On August 6, 1945 , Hiroshima, Japan was destroyed by the first direct hit of an atomic bomb on a city.  Hersey tells what happened that day.

“Told through the memories of survivors, this timeless, powerful and compassionate document, has become a classic that stirs the conscience of humanity.” ( The New York Times)

This manuscript was written to be published in four consecutive publication of THE NEW YORKER  but there was such overwhelming interest  that the magazine published it all in one issue.  It is hard for people today  to realize  how slow and cumbersome the news was during this period of history with our ongoing 24/7 news available  on cable news.

In light of North Korea and the Hawaiian false alarm, this book is sadly topical today. I think that teens would benefit from reading his book of only 150 pages. It is written in  the style of narrative non-fiction which reads like fiction and story but based on facts of nonfiction.

I remember learning in school that though terrible, the bombs dropped ended the war ans saved lives in the long run.  It seems that this is another part of history told  favorably  by  the victors.

War, though sometimes necessary ,  should be used only as a last resort, I think.  Through all the wars  in history, the average people are the ones who suffer the most and they seem to have the least to say about getting into the conflict or not.

The Greatest Showman, A Film

Image result for image of greatest showman

Who doesn’t love Hugh Jackman?  He plays the character of P T Barnum who once said,

” There is a sucker born every minute. ”

That quirky side of Barnum is not really addressed in his making people happy by unimaginable sights. The themes  included are  following your dreams, hard work, imagination, love, and family.

The music and dancing are toe tapping and infectious.

A current theme of accepting others no matter how different they are was very clear in the circus family. One character announced that even her mother had not  accepted her the way she  was loved by her new community.

The setting is New York City during the Victorian era and times were tough for many of the working class. The Circus was a good diversion for visitors or people in the street.

I took my grandchildren who are 12 and almost 8 and a good time was  had by all. The rating is PG and suitable for children in my opinion.

One story attributed to Barnum  was  how  he found a former slave who was 160 years old.  She entertained the crowds  with stories of George Washington and other historical figures.  Some of the audience believed her , suspending reality.  Others didn’t . Seems that most of us could use more laughter and happiness in our lives. Don’t you ?

The last scene in the film is a magical moment of P T Barnum, finally !

I would give this film a 3.5 * out of 5*.

Winston Churchill . . . .A Connection 70 Years Later

Image result for churchill image in the tube

Here is one of my favorite scenes  from the film, The Darkest Hour about the political climate in Britain early in World War II.  Winston Churchill is the new Prime Minister who faces the distinct possibility of  the total  destruction of the British troops at Dunkirk or negotiating peace, actually  facing  defeat to Hitler through   discussions with Mussolini. Much of the film is shot in the War Room and governing chamber of Westminster with persuasive dialogue  between the “doves” lead by former  Prime Minister Chamberlain and the “hawks” lead by Churchill.  The scene before this shot on “the tube” shows Churchill in his car , commenting that he has never in his life ridden on a bus.  He jumps out of his chauffeured driven car and enters the  tube, the London subway. The ordinary Brits’ facial expressions and body language changes from disbelief , wonder to joy as they interact with the Prime Minster. As Mr. Churchill wandered from person to groups, grabbing to stay on his feet,  he asks their opinion of the war.  The “V” for victory flashed through the  crowd with  cheers encouraging the  Prime Minister to carry on for complete victory , not surrender. These are the blue collar, working class people who bore the suffering of war with their sons fighting and dying, as well as  abject poverty and shortage of food and supplies.  But they supported Churchill , his stand and encouraged him to press on without surrender.

There is no  research that this tube ride with the masses actually took place.  Of course the Churchill  “V” for victory is proved with many images and his committed  victory speeches.   And of course, it was the masses who responded to Churchill’s call to sail  to the population of Britain to sail private  boats to Dunkirk for the emergency evacuation of the British and Belgian forces.  Such a moving scene in both films of the small  private armada of yachts and  fishing vessels as the British  sail onto the horizon after being inspired by their Prime Minister’s call  to sail and  bring home their boys!

Well, you might wonder where I am going with this.  How can there be a connection  this the story of PM Churchill and today?  Thank about it. . . someone who is upper class  , educated, and very rich connecting with the masses.  Yes, I am thinking about our President Trump.  Now I am not endorsing all  of what Mr. Trump does or says, though I agree with with much of what he has done as president but little of what he says or how he says it.  That is  a topic for a future blog, maybe !    Just think  about his ability to communicate with the masses. . . . the blue collar working public in-spite of their extreme wealth. Mr. Churchill and Mr. Trump did and can do that very well.   They gave and give a voice to the voiceless.  I am not sure how Churchill connected to the people in such a similar way but it seems to me that Mr. Trump’s outgoing personality and daily contact with the various tradesmen in his construction business gave him a splendid opportunity to speak  and understand as one of the guys!

For me this is one of the purposes of films.  to make learning connections, learn about  history ,and human nature.  I would love it to hear about your experiences in  this aspects of watching film. Do you agree with my connection or not?   Why or why not?

This summer on  our WW II trip to England and France, my children and their families visited The War Rooms in London where much of this film is set.  I didn’t and I wish I had!    But this film made it come alive.

Coins Left at a Departed Soldier’s Grave

Image result for tradition of leaving money on the stone of a military man

Mementos have been found  for the dead  left by the living since the  earliest graves were discovered.  From the simplest graves of the masses  to the  those for kings, items are left for use in the afterlife such a pottery, beads and weapons.

The mythology of the Greeks describe coins placed in the mouth of the dead for the payment to Charon, the ferryman,  for passage over the river after death.

It has long been a Jewish tradition when vising a loved one to leave a small stone or a small pile of stones on the tombstone. Flowers are perishable but  stones are not.

This is a video of the stone rubbing my family did of the stone and also rubbing sand from Omaha Beach for photos .

My grandson, Henry, beautifully  played Taps. He is standing before the wall of the missing in front of Glen Miller’s name. The big band director is a favorite of his. You can see that without the sand rubbed into the engraving, the writing on the marble wall  is impossible to read.

If you are going to a cemetery, take some pennies to place on a soldier’s stone.  This simply act will tell the family that their loved ones is not forgotten but honored for his/her service.

Atonement, a Film Review

Image result for images from film Atonement

This green dress image is memorable. . . the color, the style, the elegance.. . . the passion.

I discovered this British period  film based on Ian Mc Ewan’s book of  a wealthy British family set at their  countryside estate circa 1935.  The story continues  through scenes of the World War II battle for  Dunkirk  to the closing of the 20th century. Karen Knightly and James McAvoy have strong chemistry that easily  lasts throughout the lengthy story.

The film was released in 2007 but I found it on the TV Fire Stick last night and was held  spellbound. Not only is it visually strong  with  the wide slow-shots , it touches a place of reality in the themes. Love, lies, sex, class and the  power of words. Briony, Keira’s younger jealous sister utters a lie that changes all their lives forever.

If you have either seen the play Doubt or the film of the same name, you might agree with me  in that  there is a  similarity between these  two.  Doubt is the feeling  we  have is to whether something is the truth , or is just a mistake or did it mean something else.  It is a startling realization.  We are usually committed that something is true if we see  it with our eyes. Is it though?   I am reminded in that the police says witnesses  rarely give  the same account of an accident, though both were there.

Atonement begins and ends with words and the power they hold over life. . . true  . . .   mistaken or . . . . lies.

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit
