Spectacular Video of Night Progressing to Dawn at the Golden Temple

The Golden Temple….Part 2 The Langa

Image

Wandering through the narrow crowded streets to the Golden Temple, we were bombarded with requests to buy orange head scarves.Bare feet and covered heads are mandatory in the temple for both men and women. Our guide suggested that we wear them in the streets to eliminate the begging to buy. The first stop was the shoe removal benches. Volunteers man the shoe shelves, and there is a pool of water for everyone to walk through as well as  sinks and water for hand washing.

The Golden Temple is the focal point of a complex of buildings with the sacred water tank filled with water from the Ganges surrounding the temple in the center. The lay-out resembles Italian piazza plans. This is the central worship place for all Sikhs around the world, their St. Peters. I met a young Indian family who visit from Atlanta, GA at least once a year. We entered in the late morning and there were crowds of people. We went back in the evening for pictures and to enter the temple. The wait during the day is several hours, but only 20 minutes in the evening. The temple hours are 5 am through 11 pm, but the complex is open 24/7 for meditation or for a dip in the healing waters which some of our guys did. Your ears are filled with the continual beautiful chanting and hymn singing from the faithful which is continually amplified through the vast complex.

The part I was most interested in was the Langa which is the largest free eatery in the world. Each day, there are at least 1,000 faithful Sikhs who volunteer in food preparation, clean-up or at the shoe booth. It is possible to eat a simple Indian meal of rice, dal and rotini twenty-four hours a day. It is all free and you may eat as much as you want. There are continuous passers moving through the throng that is seated cross-legged on the floor. The average number of people served is 100,000 per day. All the work and ingredients are donated by the Sikhs. One of the early Sikhs felt men are unable to pray if their stomachs are empty.

As we circled the temple in the evening, we noticed homeless people under blankets on the colonnade sides of the complex. The can sleep, bathe, and eat without ever leaving the complex or return at any hour day or night. I am including a link to a video which, if you are interested you might like to watch, a YouTube video of the kitchen and my photos to give you a small taste of this incredible place. Christ told us that “The poor will always be here to serve,” and the Sikhs are a shining example of “caring for the least among us.”

“Indeed, few places in India demonstrate so clearly the country’s genius of diversity and tolerance, the twin reason that India—despite its fractures and fissures—has remained one nation.” By Lydia Polgreen

The videos are great, if you have time.  Peace!

Friday Fun-day! Nana, the Border Collie!

I found this amazing video. If you don’t know Border Collies, you may think your eyes are playing tricks.   But we had a Border Collie, Lucy, who looked amazingly like Nana’s twin. She didn’t all those tricks because no one spent the time and effort training her.  She could, though, “Go upstairs and find the ball!”  It would be hidden in of the several rooms that she would enter and search until she found it under a bed, under the pillows or in the closet. No, she didn’t open the drawers.

Border Collies are the recorded “smartest breed!”  How , you might ask, is a dog assessed for IQ?   A large sheet or blanket is put over the dog and a stopwatch is used to time how long it takes them to find their  way out to the light. Border Collies are always the fastest.  Other breeds who are quite smart are German Shepherds, and Standard Poodles.

Border Collies need, no demand, a energetic lifestyle with lots of exercise  and using their  minds. If not, they will find things to do in the house that may not bring smiles to your face!

Anyone have or know a Border Collie!  Please share your stories.

The Sikh Religion at the Golden Temple, Amritsar, Punjab

The Golden Temple Part I . . . The Sikh Religion

Image

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine when I was taking a “Religions of the World” class in college, that years later, I would be living religions of the world in India!  Hinduism seems quite layered and complicated, but I will try to have some thoughts on it at a later date.  I want to apologize in advance for my very simple explanation and for any mistakes I may make in my writing on the ancient Sikh religion. Feel free to add to my understanding or correct  me by replying to my post.  Yesterday I was writing about the Amritsar Massacre Garden. The Golden Sikh Temple is only a few windy streets away. Tomorrow I will write about the Golden Temple and its presence in the community, but I thought some explanation about the beliefs that were the impetus for the temple, would make it more understandable. Today’s topic will be the Sikh religion.

The history of the Sikhs parallels the history of the Punjab. The faith system began in the 15th century lead by Guru Gobind Singh who was not only  a religious leader but also a  social reformer. It was relatively compatible with other religions. During the following centuries there were some conflicts with the moguls and the Sikhs militarized.  During the tense time before the 1947 partition, there was heavy conflict with the Muslims. In 1984, a group of militant separatist  Sikhs, were fighting for their own homeland, which they called Khalistan.  They sought refuse in the Golden Temple when the Indian army stormed with tanks, soldiers and helicopters. The next year, Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister who called for the attack, paid with her life when she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards. Relations between the major religion of Hinduism and the Sikhs  have come a long way and the current Prime Minister is Mr. Singh, of the family of the founder of the Sikh religion.

The Sikhs believe that god, the creator of the universe, has no form and should not be represented by demi-gods or idols. Their hair is never cut because they would have to bow their head to the barber for cutting. They bow only to god. Human life is precious and should  always be protected. Physical force is used only as a last resort. Many Sikhs are in the army and easily recognized because of the turban worn by the men. They are obliged to work tirelessly for the poor and disadvantaged.  The Sikh’s believe in equality of all people  and reject the traditional Hindu caste system.  There is a story of a very high official wanting to visit the Golden Temple and partake of the free meal.  He was told he was welcome to come and stand in line and eat with all the other pilgrims. He argued that his life would be in danger without his guards and chose not to visit.

The” virtues” to which they are continually striving are truth, contentment, compassion, humility and love. The opposite” thieves” which were to be shunned in life are lust, wrath, greed, attachment and pride. Their three principals are to be absorbed in meditation and prayer, to make an honest income by honorable means, and to share their earnings  through selflessly serving others. Many of these can be found in other religions including Christianity and Judaism, well as Islam.

The young man in the turban was our guide for the time we were in Amritsar.  As we took time to walk, sit, and sketch, the guide asked if he could go to the shoe booth and serve his time of volunteering for the day. The man to the far right with his hand on his forehead is looking out to the Golden Temple.  He was our  lovely bus driver.  We always invited him to join in the tours and he seemed particularly happy to see the Golden Temple as he had never seen it before.

This ends today’s lesson…

‘Whale Rider,’ the Film

imageswallpaper1_1024

New Zealand has become  a huge player in international film with settings for the Lord of the Rings films, and Avatar.  The natural scenery is spectacular in Whale Rider and set in a Maori village of the indigenous people in  New Zealand   today.  The cultures of tradition and modern  are clashing as the young people are more interested in modernity than in history.40F792CB88D3A49144F953C91EC5A6

The film is an adaptation of a novel about a 12 year old Maori girl, Paikea,  who wants to be chief of her tribe.  Her grandfather, Koro,  is the current chief and his sons have no interests or aptitude for the job. He will not consider Paikea because she is a girl in  this patriarchal culture.whalerider

The story in some ways is predictable but also surprising in the conclusion. It is a coming of age film about a neglected child finding confidence and doing her best with what she has been given. The emotion is real for actors and audience and is clearly the  universal situations of  love, rejection and triumph.whalerid

‘Whale Rider’ is  about “courage in face of enemies, communal stories through dance, traits that mark a ‘dreamer’, and spirituality of a ancient people for ancestors and nature. ”

‘Whale Rider’ is one of the films you will never forget. I took my granddaughter and who is 12 and she loved it.  The date of release was 2002, and available on Netflix.

This Is ‘Whale Rider’, the Film.

Music Monday Janis Joplin ‘Piece of My Heart’

In 1966 Janis Joplin was a drifter, but four years later she was a rock ‘n’  roll legend. Her powerful bluesy-inspired voice was full of passion, and fueled by drugs and alcohol.  We saw her in concert in Charlottesville. She really put on a show inviting audience participation on the stage, and for sure had no inhibitions.  In October 1970, she was found dead of an overdose of heroin.  She was 27 years old.

She became a member of the   “27 ” club.  It  came into being when a good number of tragic, unhappy music geniuses  died at the age of 27 of drugs, alcohol, homicide or suicide.  Besides Janis Joplin, other very well known popular musicians in the group were Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and years later Curt Cobain , and Amy Winehouse.

I remember when the professor was 27 and we were visiting his mom and sitting the back yard. He was very distressed that Jim Morrison had been found dead. . . . .at 27, just his age.  Now when students ask about the 60s….he says, “It was not a happy time. . . . sex, drugs and rock’n’ roll was a pretty messy business!”

Mumbai Gang Rape:Death Sentence by Hanging for Convicted Repeat Indian Rapists

From BBC News India 4 April, 2014

A court in India has sentenced three men to hang, under a new law which carries the death penalty for those convicted of multiple sexual assaults.

The men were convicted of raping a photojournalist in Mumbai last year.

But they were also among five men sentenced to life last month for raping another woman in a separate incident in the city.

The trio are the first to be tried and convicted under the tough new law aimed at repeat sexual offenders.

Friday’s sentences were announced at a court in Mumbai where Judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi said: “There needs to be zero tolerance for such incidents,” the Agence France-Presse news agency reported.

“A loud and clear message needs to be sent to society,” she added.

Both the victims – an 18-year-old telephone operator and the photojournalist – were attacked last year. Both trials were completed within seven months in a fast-track court.

The 22-year-old photojournalist, an intern with a Mumbai-based magazine, had gone to the Shakti Mills – a former textile mill that now lies abandoned – with a male colleague on a photo assignment when she was attacked. Her colleague was beaten during the assault.

After that case made national headlines, the 18-year-old telephone operator came forward to report that she had been assaulted in the same place a month earlier.

Scrutiny of sexual violence has grown in India ever since the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012.

The case sparked off nationwide protests and forced the Indian authorities to introduce tough new anti-rape laws.

Four men were sentenced to death and a juvenile was sent to a correction facility for three years for the Delhi attack.

The attack on the Mumbai photojournalist only renewed public outrage.

From ATB:   We were surprised yesterday to hear that India has passed this extremely strong punishment for conviction of multiple rapes. They are, indeed, wanting to end this epidemic culture of rape that has been rampant in India.   The US doesn’t have a law this strong.  And a death penalty in India where life is very sacred. . . pretty amazing. There are people who feel that death penalties don’t deter such crimes. I am not one of them.  The government has made the strongest statement possible.  I, for one, say good for them.  We arrived in India just weeks after the horrendous bus rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012.   There were numerous demonstrations and marches.  One of our favorite restaurants at C G  Crossroads in Ahmedabad, Souk had all the men who worked there wear tee shirts against rape and disrespect for women. Many men and women wanted to make statements against this horrible situation.

Professor stressed  to the students in our group that they should not be alone especially at night. He also encouraged that there be one of the guys with groups of girls.  Thankfully we had no  trouble.  Safety was paramount!   I have said all along that I felt that education, a strong cultural stand with demonstrations, arrests, trials , and punishment is essential for ridding this blight in  India.  Good for the government for finally taking a strong  stand. Trials , convictions, and punishment should be the norm to begin to right this wrong and work for a  “zero tolerance” reality for women and girls in India.
