About

Through my eyes and words, I want each of you to experience this exotic, ancient country, India, which is standing on the brink of becoming a world power. And having a blog gives me a reason to write for my family, former students, grand-babies, and friends. Writing is to be read, so having readers, comments, and questions to answer will encourage me along the way.

Update

Our four month adventure in India is over, but there are still tales to tell from that far off magical place which seems now only a dream. I want to share the perfect quote from a new blogger friend who understands the trouble I am having articulating my Indian obsession!

“India leaves her mark on her guests in a most haunting compelling and often surprising way. I suspect that even now you are trying to figure out how to get back there!” (A comment response to me from Ninagrandiose’s Blog)

Bingo, Nina!

I have been fortunate to travel pretty extensively through  Western and Eastern Europe to Egypt, Ghana, Tunisia, Belize, and Guatemala. So stories from any of these places could pop up anytime. And of course tales from the United States !   You are most welcome to come along for the ride!

I love your blog. It brings out the paradox of being Indian. It pulls at the heartstrings. It frustrates; it overwhelms. Yes, India is what you say it is when you look from certain eyes, at a certain angle. It has the promise of being, as you say, a ‘world power’ and the reality of being, as I call it, a ‘spent nation’. But the hope lies in its timely awakening. High time, else there will soon be no India. The situation is quite impossible.

Oh how beautifully written, your response is. Thank you for accepting my decidedly tourist biased remarks as just what they are. I have no deep understanding of your wonderful country, but I fell in love with it all the same…in spite of the deep rooted problems. I have quite a few Indian friends in the states who get really energized by the lack of progress in their native land. Of course, that was not our perspective. I hope and pray India will survive and thrive. What wonderful spirit they have. I know it is not a good idea to discuss politics, but we were in Ahmedabad and heard mostly positive things about Mr. Modi. I don’t know if you want to comment. . . .. .nameste. . . .Anne

The same paradox! The Gujaratis are thrilled with Modi because he very smartly fuels their need for Gujarati pride! Did you notice any VISIBLE progress in Ahmedabad though!?

The BJP, to which Modi belongs itself hasn’t accepted him and the 2002 riots where multitudes of muslims died are his lasting contribution.

The formula is simple worldwide – be parochial and regional and you get a constituency. In marketing it is called segmentation.
The same BJP ran an ‘India shining’ campaign – a mirage presented to the world by a starving nation that has little else to look after, besides the stock market, where only 3 per cent of the population invests and that includes politicians!
It took a common enemy in the British to make us unite and decide we are a ‘country’. Now that the British have gone, some of our own people have taken their place, and we are craving for a cause. And unlike the British, these people are also corrupt. Many of my Indian friends will not like my blasting the country to a foreigner like you. But to me patriotism sits decidedly below the truth and I will not have any silly pedagogue take advantage of my emotions.
It’s like Bush making monkeys of Americans by waging war and getting them all excited.

Anne, you really got me going and I thank you for that. Please do not miss reading the ‘Foreword’ and the category ‘Nirbhaya’s December’. That is where the meat of the argument is.

Oh friend, I am back after an afternoon out. i have read your beautiful, haunting verse. The horrid rape was in the news in December in the States as well. We arrived in Ahmedabad on January 1st. so we were aware of the demonstrations and righteous anger all over the country , and, of course lead by the women..whom as you say were awakened. Such a horrible story of violence against Nirbhaya. And stories later on,. . . I remember three little girls in a village …sisters…raped and thrown into a well. Then that story, too, seemed to disappear. What wonderful work you are doing to keep these precious victims in the news. I pray that whomever is the new leader will take a strong stand to protect women and girls in India.
I thank you for your long and newsy replies. We were award of Modi’s time with the riots in 2002. My husband’s school canceled this program. But we , rather naively, thought that since there had not reoccurred that things were progressing. I certainly don’t want to romanticize India or the situation there as there are clearly serious problems. I hope we can stay in touch and you will read more of my blog, and I will certainly be back to yours.

India is not our first developing country. I told him your comment about Spain, and he laughed not remembering any trouble there, but we never lived there. Do you live in Spain?

Really like your blog, and the way you write. Enjoyed Dreamer’s and Do’ers and Holy Cow particularly. After reading your blog just felt like sharing what another traveller long back said of his visit to India.

This is indeed India! the land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of a hundred tongues, of many religions and many gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition, whose yesterdays bear date with the mouldering antiquities of the rest of the nations — the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for the inner self consciousness, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the globe combined. Even now, after the lapse of a year, the delirium of those days in Bombay has not left me, and I hope never will.

No we cannot say the courts have cleared him yet. All cases are still on. His aid Madhu Kodnani is in jail and now the latest is the fake encounter of a 19 year old Muslim girl that has made Modi shut up and suddenly vanish from media. He’s going to be in serious trouble. His next contribution will be to polarise Gujaratis and non Gujaratis. The man is deranged. India has a knack of suffering monsters. Anywhere else he would have hanged. There is no comparison between congress and BJP even though I detest dynastic politics.

I started a comment and lost it on my phone so if this a repeat, I apologize. I thank you for taking time to share all this with a foreigner who has no vote, but does care for India very much. I have heard that Modi has increased the universities from 11 to 42 during his time in office and now Ahmadabad is called the Boston of India! And mostly all the people who praise him, and yes there are bloggers who do as emphatically as you oppose him , say that he is not corrupt and won’t stand for corruption in his government. You seem to dispute that as well. I know he is pro-business and yet there are terrible slums all over Ahmedabad. The problems are so old and deep, it just seems that one has to hold his/her nose and vote for the lessor of two evils. Modi has a record as does congress party. People will have to vote on that.

We are having a strange election in New York City. Two former politicians who resigned in disgrace ( never prosecuted or tried) , are throwing their hats back into the ring. Weiner was caught sending lewd pictures over the internet and Spritzer, who was the governor, was taking a prostitute across state lines and that is a felony. He was not convicted. As a Christian, I believe deeply in repentance, confession and redemption, only God knows their hearts, but it is strange nonetheless. I think that power is corrupting and they somehow think of themselves as above the law. I am thinking about writing a post about these three men.

I know this is way before your time, but you know so much history and politics, did you think Indira Ghandi was good for the country? Namaste. . .Anne

No she wasn’t good for the country. Not at all. Democratic institutions have been ruined beyond repair during her time. She was blind to her son’s doings and I am talking of Sanjay Gandhi. People who support Modi are either those who support the so called cause of Hinduta, or are looking at trying out the new toy again, or our simply delusional or most often have a very scanty understanding of Indian history and politics. He is trying to fuel non existent Gujarati pride, the ant Muslim diatribe in Hindus and the fanning the greed of corporate India. He will fail while you and I blog over here. Our constitution is supposedly secular. Modi and his ilk should go to Nepal. That’s a Hindu kingdom. This is isn’t. I am Hindu but fortunately love mankind more than anything else. Bloggers will naturally have different opinions but have you notices how the silence is defeating on Modi now and how senior BJP leaders are avoiding the press. If you aren’t even the near unanimous choice in your own party fat chance you have of leading this complex country.

My writing style is probably influenced by being an teacher in elementary school with 8-9 year olds and or because I am no a great intellect! 😎 I am glad you like my stories from incredible India… I am most sincere and it really pleases me how gracious the Indians have been in reading my impressions. Thank you for this. I got the one out today and another one has come in, too. I can see why people say no awards, but I really like to give them! Will do this in a week or of so!

      • Sure and I have liberated my nominees from doing so… It is your choice if you want to reciprocate liberally or just put it on your blog 🙂
It is tiring process… Took me half day to get done with mine… But I like it when they come with no rules and restrictions:).
I am going to deliver mine restrictions free 🙂

We were in Ahmedabad for 3 months while the architecture students and professor husband were at Cept University. We went on a two week north trip pretty much to the highlights that everyone visits. I adore Varanasi. Then a two week trip south to lots of Hindu temples….amazing…Kerala and Goa and train back to Ahmedabad. Magical places….love incredible India!

Your own blog looks intriguing, but – sorry to be so curious, and ignore the nearly-question if you will – but after the four months in India I would love to know where you went next.
    Home ?
If so … where is home ?

After our semester in India, we came back to Upstate New York to our home. We had hoped to go to Istanbul but when there were demonstrations and trouble there this spring, and my husband was pretty tired, we postponed that to hopefully next summer! Where are you from? Namaste. . . .Anne

Stafforshire looks lovely and peaceful with the forest and river. I love that in your country there are walking paths as access to the pubic right through private property. When my architect and I travel, it is usually urban places to see architecture. I did travel with a woman friend who had lived in Cambridge, but we were mostly in the East. When architect and I drove , we were around the coast and spent several weeks in England, Wales and Scotland. we loved it and the wonderful British hospitality Namaste. . . Anne !

No, we didn’t get there. We travelled for a month but Incredible India is huge. I think it is south. We hit lots of Hindu temples, Kerla and Goa so the kids have some beach time. Glad you liked the history. I am a retired teacher and never miss the opportunity to “teach!” Thanks for the comment!
