This photo was taken by my son, Chris last weekend when he an his family visited New York City for the Christmas festivities.  As you can see, the shot was taken from seats in the auditorium of Radio City Music Hall.   There are seats for 6015  people.  The shows run from the end of November until the end of December. Some days there are four shows, others have five, and there are even six shows on the very busy days. We took our children when they were growing up and  bought tickets in September . All the shows sell out.  This is the home of the rockets the amazing dancers, there is ice skating during the show, secular music, and Santa taking off and flying across the stage.  I will never forget the first time I went when at the end of the show, there was a living nativity…

Piazza Navona Christmas Market

A Roman Christmas market. . . . . .

annetbell's avatarTalesAlongTheWay

PiazzaNavona1

Piazza Navona Christmas market in Rome  is  on the list of best European Christmas Markets.   It is on the ancient site of the Circus of Domitian and has the shape of a stadium because of the games played  there in ancient times.  As the Christmas season nears, the vendors set up their  toys, ornaments and delicious Italian sweets. One of my favorite items were the Christmas figures for the manger scene.  It is very difficult and terribly expensive to get the hand-carved wooden  figures, but I did see them for sale in the shops near the Vatican. The ones on sale at Navona were plastic but the gifted Italian artists worked their magic with plastic and  the expressions and details  of clothing etc. are wonderful and the price is much more reasonable.

The last time I went with my husband  for a semester in Rome, the  students were frantically…

The Piano Guys and “Angles We Have Heard on High”

The Most Moving Part of This Beautiful ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’ Rendition Comes at the Three-Minute Mark

Just days after more than 1,000 people came together in Provo, Utah, to break the world record for the largest-ever living nativity display, The Piano Guys, David Archuleta, Peter Hollens and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir have collectively released a stunning music video including portions of that nativity scene intermixed with their beautiful rendition of “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

The group put its own unique spin on the traditional song, making their newly released version of the popular hymn that commemorates Christ’s birth available free for download.

Throughout the accompanying music video, which was released Friday morning, The Piano Guys, Archuleta and others are seen performing the carol, as scenes with actors portraying Mary, Joseph, Jesus and other nativity characters are acted out, truly bringing the biblical story to life.

The most moving moment comes at the 3:00 mark when hundreds of angels approach the nativity scene.

Watch the video below:

As TheBlaze previously reported, the nativity-themed scenes were filmed December 1 when1,039 people donning angel costumes, among other  biblical garb, descended upon Utah’s Rock Canyon Park, where they proceeded to break the previous record of 889 participants that was set in the Guinness Book of World Records last year.

The Caste System

A little quick history lesson for those we missed this post.

annetbell's avatarTalesAlongTheWay

Egyptian social structurecaste-systemToday, I was going to post on death rituals or mummification and reincarnation but as I was doing research, I got interested in learning about caste systems in India and ancient Egypt.   I always feel  a tad tenuous speaking as an authority on subjects, I have only read about…I dip my toes gingerly  into the pool of history and beliefs of cultures not my own. I would be most happy if any readers from India and or Egypt would step in and make corrections or comments. I can only say I have the deepest respect for both these cultures and the accomplishments and  ideas they have given to the world both then and now. Please know that any mistakes I make are not malicious but because I lack the knowledge.

First a caste system is defined as a way to organize society into groups based on heredity. For Americans…

healingtheeternal_table

Hinduism is the  world’s fourth largest religion with seven hundred fifty million  devotees. It was founded in the North of India, 4,000 years ago near the Indus River.  This makes it the oldest exiting religion in the world. 80% of all the modern Indian  population  are followers.  Reincarnation, a belief of “life after death,”  was begun with Hinduism.  They believe that the soul is eternal and lives many life times in one body after another while the  preceding body, or container of the soul, rots or is burned up.    The body may be  human,  animal, or plant.  They believe that any form of of life contains a soul (atman) and thus has a chance  to experience life in different forms. Good deeds or works preformed  means you will move up the cycle  in the next life. Moska is what all are working to attain which is the ultimate release…

Terminally Ill Lauren Hill Plays Basketball

This is  story of courage, grace, and generosity.  It would be wonderful if all sports reflected this monumental moment of joy and spirit shown  in a dying girl’s  last weeks of life.  So many people played a part in helping her fulfill her dream! Your hearts will be touched by this Christmas gift!

In her dying she shows us how to live!

Joey Fala, Organist and Architecture Student

I just saw on the Saturday morning show, that there are students at prestigious George Washington  University who have signed petitions supporting  exchanging an American citizen for an illegal immigrant!

http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=6151

You probably have also seen ‘on the street interviews” of  American students who know nothing about American history or politics.

In contrast, let me introduce you to Joey Fala,  a Renaissance man. I know nothing about Joey’s knowledge of history and /or politics but he is a dedicated student.  He is a very hardworking , focused young man who is a 5th year student in the Architecture school  and is also working simultaneously  on a Master’s degree in lighting! He will graduate in the spring with dual degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where my husband teaches, also a fine university with a reputation for rigor.

Well you already know that that is not enough for Joey. He is also  a accomplished organist who is the choir director and organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Troy, and who quite regularly prepares and  gives organ recitals.  Take a few minutes to watch and listen to this elegant piece played with technical perfection! Watch for the running octaves in the pedal throughout the piece!

David was sorry that Joey was not able to go to India with the last group of students, but you can see Joey Fala  is quite busy and couldn’t be away for a semester !

Thanks Joey for being a millennial student  who is inspiring us all !

HT008844~Wall-Painting-of-Egyptian-Pharaoh-and-Hieroglyphics-from-Tomb-24-Posters

Over 5000 years ago, ancient Egyptians wrote using a picture writing called hieroglyphics. The writers were called scribes. Not everyone had this training not even the Pharaoh and his family. There was a problem because Egyptians wrote down everything, and hieroglyphs were beautiful, but time consuming! Hieroglyphics The scribes needed a faster way to write. They created the first shorthand called Demotic script. The new scribes used that exclusively and never learned the ancient hieroglyphs. They wrote faster and even  created some new scripts.Hieroglyphs11

Hundreds of years passed and archaeologists discovered beautiful hieroglyphic writing on ancient walls of tombs and pyramids in Egypt. But there was a problem. Though they knew there was a story told there on the wall, and they could read Demotic Script, there was not one person on the face of the earth who could read ancient Egyptian!   This mystery wasn’t solved until about 200 years…
