Friday Fun-day! Nana, the Border Collie!

I found this amazing video. If you don’t know Border Collies, you may think your eyes are playing tricks.   But we had a Border Collie, Lucy, who looked amazingly like Nana’s twin. She didn’t all those tricks because no one spent the time and effort training her.  She could, though, “Go upstairs and find the ball!”  It would be hidden in of the several rooms that she would enter and search until she found it under a bed, under the pillows or in the closet. No, she didn’t open the drawers.

Border Collies are the recorded “smartest breed!”  How , you might ask, is a dog assessed for IQ?   A large sheet or blanket is put over the dog and a stopwatch is used to time how long it takes them to find their  way out to the light. Border Collies are always the fastest.  Other breeds who are quite smart are German Shepherds, and Standard Poodles.

Border Collies need, no demand, a energetic lifestyle with lots of exercise  and using their  minds. If not, they will find things to do in the house that may not bring smiles to your face!

Anyone have or know a Border Collie!  Please share your stories.

But…..oh those Border Collies can! One of my followers commented on her crazy boy Border Collie who would escape by jumping out of a second story window!

They are amazing. Hard to keep ahead of them! When we went to England and were driving through the farmland, we saw a man playing in his yard with this BCs. I said, “Stop!” to the professor who is much shyer than me. I said,”He won’t mind if we ask to play with his dogs…” And of course he didn’t, though he hardly had a chance with the pushy American woman. Well anyway , we loved BCs!

No. Hamish is from Ireland and he already had the name when we got him from the rescue, it suits him so we kept it.

Hamish is the first dog we have adopted from Ireland but since 2008 we fostered for a local Border Collie rescue and most of our foster came from Ireland.
Unfortunately we had to sever ties with that rescue when appalling conditions and neglect came to light. I did a post about that situation a week or two ago, very sad situation indeed. 😦

Oh, when I went to your site I saw images of cages and filth, but I didn’t read what it was. Bummer. I guess there are quite a few people who don’t know what they are getting with they get a BC. There are BC rescues here in the states as well. We got Lucy from a farmer who brought puppies to a Scottish games near us and we went home with her! Saw the mama and daddy working the sheep. Terribly romantic!

We were in Scotland and went to working trials with Border Collies and sheep….amazing. Then we went to a farm that raised them. Most amazing sites…pups begin herding training with ducks and geese. They they worked a team where each dog had a different click sound with the clicker. There were 8 dogs with the sheep and they each had a job to do. Then they would lie down and do the Border Collie “stare ” to terrify the poor, dumb sheep!

Indy comes from a sheep farm in Scotland, he spent 9 months learning to work sheep but was more interested in people so our friend gave him to us. I am so glad he did. 🙂

we were staying in Calendar , Scotland and the farm and trials must have been near there. Our Lucy was a descendant of Price’s Davey and the Scotsman knew of that dog. Must have been quite the follow.

I love calander, we were just talking about our trips there last night, our last Golden Retriever rolled in fox poo there in the same exact place five years apart and it was the only two times he ever did it. 🙂

Professor chose for us to stay in Calander, then go out on day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh and north to Loch Ness. I remember how dreadful the roads were north windy and bumpy. Finally there was a sign saying roads were now poor! Good grief. I also kept telling him I had seen in the paper that Nessie was on vacation so she wouldn’t be there! Didn’t work as we went anyway and of course she didn’t show up…of course!

There is a border collie here who chases the geese away. A woman rides around in a golf cart with her dog and it does tricks. I’ve never seen such an agile dog before! Great video, thanks!

We had a series of three mixed breed dogs. They were all part collie for over a span of thirty years. They took their amazing tricks and wonderful, guarding responsibilities everywhere, including with my children and parents on camping trips. They always were pleasant and helpful, too. All liked to swim in Lake Erie. No border collies, since my parents liked Pound Puppies! Smiles, Robin
