Memorial Day 2015

This is Maddingley American Cemetery in Cambridge, England where my oldest brother, George Bowler Tullidge, III  is buried.  He was a paratrooper  who jumped the night of June 5th into France to go to the coast to meet the troops on the cliffs , thus trapping the Germans.  George  was wounded in the hip in what would not be a life-threatening wound  today. Antibiotics were not available at this time.  He died on June  8th.

I know my brother only from family stories, but I thank him for his example, service , and unselfish  love of freedom!

    I grew up hearing about your brave brother and reading your mother’s little book. I remember the plaque in the First Presbyterian Church to his memory. Reading about his unit in France was awe-inspiring. Someday I hope to visit Cambridge and the cemetery. What a loss for your family.

      Thank you Jane for sharing. The cemetery is powerful but in Normandy, the beaches, the cliffs and St. mere Eglese is Holy Ground. Visit them all! Blessings!

    Anne, for almost as long as I can remember I have known of George’s service and have always loved A Paratrooper’s Faith your mother compiled…how very many people both George and your mother touched through that small but powerful book. It is a privilege to be counted among them…that is for sure. Blessings to you and yours on this Memorial Day 2015, dear friend.

    George was a true hero and it is certainly fitting to remember him today. I remember seeing his portrait at your family’s home. A few years ago I read a speech about George and your mother’s book that was made on Memorial Day by a member of the faculty in Mary Baldwin College’s military program. As the speaker pointed out, your mother was a hero, too. I have been looking for a link to that speech which I believe was in the Staunton Leader and will post that link if I find it. I also understand that there is a museum at St. Mere Eglise where George’s heroic story is told.     Oh, I just read the tribute from Stauton, and learned more about your brother. And also, as past member of the 82nd, my ‘brother.
    I am proud to have served in the 82nd Airborne, albeit a few years later, that had men like your brother in it, men to look up to.
    The words of General Gavin…I never had the honor of serving under ‘Slim Jim’ Gavin, but I did have the honor of standing several hours in the heat of the parade field at Fort Bragg the day General Gavin retired. And I did serve with several men, who liked your brother, made the Normandy jump. Truly, THE GREATEST GENERATION.

    Hi Anne,
    Did you ever hear back from the museum in St Mere Eglise? I will be going there in Sept. and have written to our tour guide, a retired British soldier, asking if I would have time to look for your brother’s display to take a picture. He has kindly answered that he will not only look for the display, but that we would make a stop at La Fiere bridge. In order to help him I will send an article with George’s picture. This will be my second visit to that area, but first time inside the museum.

      Oh, I have goosebumps! Do you have a copy of the Paratrooper’s Faith? You can google Paratrooper’s Faith my mama’s obit. Anne Archer Hogshead Tullidge. If you send me your address, I can mail copies of the booklet for you the tour guide and the museum. The picture you have or will have when I send it is the very one on display , to the right of the entrance in the left corner. The picture didn’t haven’t his name and there was no copy of the booklet with him. It would be such a blessing if you could get them to label the picture with his name. . . .George Bowler Tullidge III, and put a copy of the booklet with him. The family would be so blessed.
